Implantable Loop Recorders in Patients with Unexplained Syncope: Does Ethnic Background Influence Diagnostic Yield?

BACKGROUND: Implantable loop recorders (ILRs) are a central tool in the evaluation of unexplained syncope. These devices record and store electrocardiograms, both automatically and on patient-dependent activation. Therefore, obtaining optimal diagnostic results relies on a patient's comprehension and collaboration. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of ethnic background and mother-tongue language on the diagnostic yield (DY) of ILRs. METHODS: Patients at two medical centers in Israel, who had ILRs as part of syncope workup were included. Inclusion criteria were age over 18 years and an ILR f

Does Procrastination Have a Cultural or a Neurological Source? Evidence of its Mediating Role in the Relationship Between Psychological Capital and Academic Adjustment.

Objective: I examined the relationships between psychological capital (PsyCap), academic adjustment, and tendency toward procrastination in 3 groups of students in higher education-an ethnocultural minority group (Israeli Arabs), a neurotypical ethnocultural majority group (Israeli Jews), and an ethnocultural majority group diagnosed with learning disabilities (Israeli Jews with learning disabilities). The goal was to deepen and expand understanding of the factors that affect academic adjustment. Methods: Overall, 449 post-secondary students enrolled in various academic institutions in Israel

Racial Discrimination and Race-Based Biases on Orthopedic-Related Outcomes: An Integrative Review.

Musculoskeletal diseases often lead to functional limitations and debility. The burden of these debilitating diseases is not balanced across race and ethnicity. The Institute of Medicine (now referred to as the National Academy of Medicine) identified racial discrimination as a substantive cause of race-based health disparities for racial and ethnic minority groups. The purpose of this integrative review is to summarize the evidence on the relationship among racial discrimination, race-based implicit biases and other types of biases (e.g., gender and appearance), and orthopaedic-related outcom…

The Big Minority View: Do Prescientific Beliefs Underpin Criminal Justice Cruelty, and Is the Public Health Quarantine Model a Remedy?

Famed lawyer Clarence Darrow (1857-1938) argued strongly for an early-life public health approach to crime prevention, one that focused on education, poverty reduction, and equity of resources. Due to his defense of marginalized persons and his positions that were often at odds with his legal colleagues and public opinion, he was known as the Big Minority Man. He argued that the assumption of free will-humans as free moral agents-justifies systems of inequity, retributive punishment, and "unadulterated brutality." Here, the authors revisit Darrow's views and expand upon them via contemporary r

Survey of Potential Disparity Issues Among Minority Stroke Survivors in Central Brooklyn.

Medical data and information are ubiquitous due to internet availability. However, most people persist in using and trusting their healthcare professionals for health information. They are increasingly flooded with health information from diverse sources such as the internet, community-based organizations, and family or friends. It is crucial to understand where stroke patients vary in the use and trust of health information to improve their conditions. This pilot study aimed to better understand the nature of the problems confronted by stroke patients, such as the source of reliable health in

Being a Deaf Woman in Bedouin Society.

Israel's Bedouin population, an ethnic minority, has a higher incidence of deafness than that reported in the literature, but is not studied sufficiently. A patriarchal and collective society, in recent years it has undergone accelerated change spurred by Israel's urbanization policy. Deaf women are an inseparable part of Bedouin society, but they are transparent and their needs are not met. In a qualitative study of 23 Bedouin women with congenital deafness who participated in the only social club for the deaf among the Bedouin population in southern Israel, these women were found to exist be

The experiences of home-domiciled and international ethnic minority students on a pre-registration speech and language therapy training programme: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Attainment inequalities exist for ethnic minority students graduating from higher education institutes (HEIs) in the UK. Previous research has investigated the outcomes and experiences of students from ethnic minority backgrounds on health and social care programmes. However, studies exploring ethnic minority speech and language therapy (SLT) students' experiences have only focused on international students and were conducted in Australia. No known studies exploring the experiences of both home-domiciled and international SLT students from ethnic minority backgrounds have been cond

Association of social network characteristics with HIV knowledge, stigma, and testing: findings from a study of racial and ethnic minority women in a small Western city.

Black and Latina women are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Despite existing research linking social networks and HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) and other high-risk populations, little research has examined how ethnic/racial minority women's social networks shape HIV prevention and intervention targets. Using interviews with a sample of 165 predominantly Black and Latina-identifying women from a small city in the Western U.S., this research examines the relationship between egocentric network characteristics and HIV knowledge, attitudes, and testing history. Results rev

Sociopolitical Threats Heighten Minority Stress for Current Sexual and Gender Minority Public Health Trainees in the United States.

The current U.S. sociopolitical climate-marked by recent targeted anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) legislation and executive orders (i.e., sociopolitical stressors)-including those focused on antidiversity, equity, and inclusion-leads to heightened minority stress among current LGBTQ+ public health trainees, threatening their well-being and career trajectories. Macro-level (distal) stressors, such as discriminatory funding cuts, institutional censorship, and sociopolitical hostility interact with proximal stressors (i.e., expectatio

A Critical Review of Post-Childbirth Pain Experiences and Management in Relation to Postpartum Depression Risk for Racial and Ethnic Minorities.

PURPOSE: This critical review examines literature published between January 2020 and January 2025, focusing on overlapping pain-related factors during and after childbirth (e.g., pain experiences and management). These factors may increase vulnerability to postpartum depression, especially among racial and ethnic minorities. RECENT FINDINGS: The findings from the 23 studies reviewed indicate that several factors contribute to peripartum pain experienced by individuals giving birth. Factors influencing the birthing person's pain experiences include their mental health during pregnancy (such as

A review of the current policies and guidance regarding Apgar scoring and the detection of jaundice and cyanosis concerning Black, Asian and ethnic minority neonates.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic inequalities in maternal and neonatal health in the UK are well documented. Concerns exist regarding the use of skin colour in neonatal assessments. Healthcare professionals should be trained to recognise symptoms of diverse skin tones, and comprehensive, and inclusive guidance is necessary for the safe assessment of all infants. Disparities in healthcare provision have been emphasised during the COVID-19 pandemic, and additional research is needed to determine whether such policies adequately address ethnic minority neonates. METHODS: A desktop search included searches of

Variations in Substance Use and Disorders Among Sexual Minorities by Race/Ethnicity.

Little is known about racial/ethnic minority substance use and disorder-related disparities among sexual minorities as compared to their heterosexual counterparts. This study aimed to understand the associations between sexual minority status and substance use and disorders among U.S. adults stratified by race/ethnicity. Methods: We analyzed data from a sample of U.S. adults (n = 35,981) surveyed during the 2012-2013 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III. Respondents were categorized into four sexual minority statuses: heterosexual, gay/lesbian, bisexual, and co

Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Interventions for Sexual and/or Gender Minority-Identified People and the Theories That Underpin Them: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: This scoping review takes stock of the social and behavior change theories that have underpinned tobacco interventions tailored to sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) people and reflects on the need to target contextually based drivers of SGM tobacco use inequities. AIMS AND METHODS: Data sources were Medline (Ovid), Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar (January 01, 1946 to October 27, 2022). Peer-reviewed publications in English from anywhere in the world describing SGM-tailored tobacco cessation and/or prevention interventions were independently identified by a librarian and scr

Sex and Racial Disparities in Peripheral Artery Disease.

Several studies have shown that women and racial and ethnic minority patients are at increased risk of developing lower extremity peripheral artery disease and suffering adverse outcomes from it, but a knowledge gap remains regarding the underlying causes of these increased risks. Both groups are more likely to be underdiagnosed, have poorly managed contributory comorbidities, and incur disparities in treatment and management postdiagnosis. Opportunities for improvement in the care of women and racial and ethnic minorities with peripheral artery disease include increased rates of screening, hi

Racial and ethnic differences in diagnosis age and blood biomarkers in a pediatric inflammatory bowel disease cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Prompt diagnosis of pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is crucial for preventing a complicated disease course; however, it is not well understood how social determinants of health might affect pediatric IBD diagnosis. This study examined differences in diagnosis age, biomarkers of disease severity, and anthropometrics with sociodemographic factors in a pediatric IBD cohort. METHODS: Pediatric IBD patients (n = 114) and their parents/caregivers were enrolled from the Children's of Alabama Pediatric IBD Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. Primary analyses examined associatio

The mental health and substance use treatment experiences of racially and ethnically minoritised women who have experienced sexual violence.

The mental health and substance use treatment experiences of racially and ethnically minoritised women who have experienced sexual violence is not well understood. To address this we conducted a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies. Our search strategy included electronic searches of 18 databases and grey literature, citation tracking and reference list screening. Studies were eligible if they presented qualitative data from racially and/or ethnically minoritised women or girls, who had experienced sexual violence at any age and described their experiences of receiving t

Racial/ethnic disparities in HIV infection among people who inject drugs: an international systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: The Ethnic Minority Meta-Analysis (EMMA) aims to assess racial/ethnic disparities in HIV infection among people who inject drugs (PWID) across various countries. This is the first report of the data. METHODS: Standard systematic review/meta-analysis methods were utilized, including searching for, screening and coding published and unpublished reports and meta-analytical statistics. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines for reporting methods.
