Understanding the moral cognition of aggression: Longitudinal serial effects of personal relative deprivation and hostility on within-person changes in civic moral disengagement.

Moral disengagement is an important aggressive and moral cognition. The mechanisms of changes in moral disengagement remain unclear, especially at the within-person level. We attempted to clarify this by exploring the serial effects of personal relative deprivation and hostility on civic moral disengagement. We conducted a three-wave longitudinal survey with 1058 undergraduates (63.61% women; mean age = 20.97). The results of the random intercept cross-lagged panel model showed that personal relative deprivation at Wave 1 and hostility at Wave 2 formed a serial effect on the within-person chan

Moral Injury and Suicide: A Systematic Review of Mediators and Moderators.

OBJECTIVE: "Moral injury" (MI) describes the psychosocial-spiritual distress that may follow events that involve deep violations of right and wrong (i.e., potentially morally injurious events [PMIE]). Little is known about why MI seems to elevate risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). This review aims to synthesize the existing research on mechanisms of the association (i.e., mediators and moderators) between PMIE/MI/moral distress and STB. METHOD: We conducted a PRISMA/PROSPERO systematic review (ID# CRD42024524601; last search July 2025). Data quality were assessed with two validat

The Eclipse of Conviction: Conscience, Moral Authority, and Disagreement in the Church.

This article analyzes persistent moral disagreement within the contemporary church through a distinction between opinion and conviction as competing forms of moral reasoning. Drawing upon Alasdair MacIntyre's account of moral fragmentation and Charles Taylor's analysis of expressive individualism, it argues that ecclesial conflict intensifies when moral claims detach from shared standards of truth. When conscience functions as a site of personal authenticity rather than as judgment ordered toward objective moral reality, doctrinal authority weakens, and disagreement becomes resistant to resolu

Situational status and moral incoherence in UK bio-law.

UK bio-law is praised for its pragmatic governance of ethically contested practices, especially embryo research, where the post-Warnock settlement regulates conduct through licensing, oversight, and the 14-day or primitive streak rule without resolving moral-status disputes. This article argues that this pragmatism exposes a structural incoherence, partly narrowed but not resolved by abortion-law reform. Embryo research law treats the embryo as a procedurally governed object, while abortion law has historically operated through a criminal-exception model under the Offences Against the Person A

Reification as a vice: rethinking bioethics beyond moral status.

In this paper, I argue for an expansion of moral concern in bioethics beyond sentience-based and status-based frameworks. Drawing on Lukács' and Honneth's work on reification, I show that even where the sentience, species membership, or moral status of an entity is unknown, there are compelling ethical reasons to be concerned about the creation, manipulation, and use of such entities. I reconceive reification not just as a social pathology but as a moral vice: a disordered, objectifying mode of perception. Understood in this way, reification provides a flexible normative framework that applies

Liminal Personhood and Continuity of Moral Identity in Clinical Care.

Capacity-based frameworks of personhood risk marginalizing individuals whose agency, cognition, or consciousness are diminished by illness, brain injury, or proximity to death. This article introduces the concept of liminal personhood, which describes the persistence of moral and relational identity even as conventional markers of personhood fade. Drawing on ethical, philosophical, and neuroethical scholarship, the paper argues that failing to recognize enduring personhood can fracture patient identity and erode clinician and caregiver moral integrity. Recognition of liminal personhood has cle

Ethics and moral empathy in end-of-life palliative care.

OBJECTIVES: End-of-life care poses significant ethical challenges for nurses, requiring a deep understanding of moral empathy and ethical decision-making. This study examines the impact of these factors on end-of-life decision-making among nurses in oncology and pain management units in Egypt. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed to gather data from participants at a single point in time, facilitating an analysis of the relationships among ethical principles, moral empathy, and nursing practice. The study involved 246 registered nurses with at least 6 months of experience, selected

The Implications of Moral Neuroscience for Brain Disease: Review and Update.

The last 2 decades have seen an explosion of neuroscience research on morality, with significant implications for brain disease. Many studies have proposed a neuromorality based on intuitive sentiments or emotions aimed at maintaining collaborative social groups. These moral emotions are normative, deontological, and action based, with a rapid evaluation of intentionality. The neuromoral circuitry interacts with the basic mechanisms of socioemotional cognition, including social perception, behavioral control, theory of mind, and social emotions such as empathy. Moral transgressions may result

Environmentalizing Bioethics: Planetary Health in a Perfect Moral Storm.

Many of humanity's most serious problems are global, intergenerational, and ecological, yet current institutions are poorly placed to confront such problems. In part, this institutional challenge reflects difficulties with our basic concepts and theories. Bioethics is a central area where such questions arise. Although some have argued for an environmentalized bioethics since its inception, biomedicine has thus far failed to embrace the challenge, and some accuse most bioethicists of being "asleep at the wheel" (Schenck and Churchill 2021). This paper discusses the basic ethical challenge, off

Forgiveness: A Key Component of Healing From Moral Injury?

Service members and veterans can be exposed to potentially traumatic and morally injurious experiences (PMIEs) including participating in, witnessing, or failing to prevent an act(s) that transgresses their core beliefs. Violation of one's deeply held morals and values can be profoundly distressing and shatter one's sense of self at the deepest level. Relationships with self, others, the world, and for some, the Sacred, can also be fractured. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Moral Injury (MI) can result. Left unresolved, MI can leave individuals struggling with guilt, shame, cognit

Sentenced to shame: Moral injury exposure in former lifers.

OBJECTIVE: A significant increase in the release of individuals who served life sentences (i.e., lifers) in California has created the opportunity to study aspects of their psychological wellness for the first time. Moral injury may be a particularly relevant factor to consider in this population but has not been previously studied. This study is the first to explore the concept of moral injury within a currently or formerly incarcerated population. METHOD: Former lifers currently in reentry in California (N = 41) completed a survey that measured their moral injury exposure (MIE), MIE-related

Systematic scoping review on moral distress among physicians.

BACKGROUND: Concepts of moral distress (MD) among physicians have evolved and extend beyond the notion of psychological distress caused by being in a situation in which one is constrained from acting on what one knows to be right. With many accounts involving complex personal, professional, legal, ethical and moral issues, we propose a review of current understanding of MD among physicians. METHODS: A systematic evidence-based approach guided systematic scoping review is proposed to map the current concepts of MD among physicians published in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, SCOPUS,

Exploring the neural correlates of (altered) moral cognition in psychopaths.

Research into the neurofunctional mechanisms of psychopathy has gathered momentum over the last years. Previous neuroimaging studies have identified general changes in brain activity of psychopaths. In an exploratory meta-analysis, we here investigated the neural correlates of impaired moral cognition in psychopaths. Our analyses replicated general effects in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, lateral prefrontal cortex, fronto-insular cortex, and amygdala, which have been reported recently. In addition, we found aberrant brain activity in the midbrain and inferior parietal cortex. Our prelimin

Deontological Guilt and Disgust Sensitivity Modulate Moral Behaviour.

OBJECTIVE: Deontological Guilt (DG), and Altruistic Guilt (AG) emerge from the appraisal of violating an internalized rule or an altruistic principle, respectively. DG is strictly connected with Disgust Sensitivity and plays a key role in the development and maintenance of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Previous studies investigated how DG affects responses to hypothetical moral dilemmas, however how DG and Disgust Sensitivity interact modulating moral behavior is still unknown. METHODS: STUDY 1. 46 healthy participants performed an ecological paradigm in which people can spontaneously

The impact of moral injury on the wellbeing of UK military veterans.

BACKGROUND: Experiences of potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) have been found to negatively impact the mental health of US personnel/veterans, yet little is known about the effect of PMIEs on the mental health of the UK Armed Forces (AF). This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association between PMIEs and the mental health outcomes of UK AF veterans. METHOD: Assessments of PMIE exposure and self-report measures of common mental disorders were administered using an online questionnaire to 204 UK veterans. Subjects were classified as having experienced a morally injurious ev

Moral distress among residents in neurology: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Medical progress, economization of healthcare systems, and scarcity of resources raise fundamental ethical issues. Physicians are exposed to increasing moral conflict situations, which may cause Moral Distress (MD). MD occurs when someone thinks he or she might know the morally correct action but cannot act upon this knowledge because of in- or external constraints. Correlations of MD among residents to job changes and burn-out have been shown previously. There are, however, hardly any quantitative studies about MD among physicians in Germany. The aim of this study was to investiga

Pathocentric Health Care and a Minimal Internal Morality of Medicine.

Christopher Boorse is very skeptical of there being a pathocentric internal morality of medicine. Boorse argues that doctors have always engaged in activities other than healing, and so no internal morality of medicine can provide objections to euthanasia, contraception, sterilization, and other practices not aimed at fighting pathologies. Objections to these activities have to come from outside of medicine. I first argue that Boorse fails to appreciate that such widespread practices are compatible with medicine being essentially pathocentric. Then I contend that the pathocentric essence, prop
