QTL mapping of genome regions controlling temephos resistance in larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

INTRODUCTION: The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the principal vector of dengue and yellow fever flaviviruses. Temephos is an organophosphate insecticide used globally to suppress Ae. aegypti larval populations but resistance has evolved in many locations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) controlling temephos survival in Ae. aegypti larvae were mapped in a pair of F3 advanced intercross lines arising from temephos resistant parents from Solidaridad, México and temephos susceptible parents from Iquitos, Peru. Two sets of 200 F3 larvae were exposed to a discriminating do

Eco-friendly approach using marine actinobacteria and its compounds to control ticks and mosquitoes.

Ticks and mosquitoes are ectoparasitic arthropods that can transmit a variety of diseases to humans and animals during blood feeding and causing serious infectious disorders. The purpose of the present study was to assess the acaricidal and insecticidal property of ethyl acetate extract and its compounds isolated from marine actinobacteria, Streptomyces VITSTK7 sp. against the larvae of cattle ticks, Haemaphysalis bispinosa and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae); fourth-instar larvae of malaria vector, Anopheles subpictus; and filarial vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera

Temporal and spatial distribution of anopheline mosquitos in an Ethiopian village: implications for malaria control strategies.

The spatial and temporal distribution of Anopheles gambiae mosquitos in houses in the village of Sille in Ethiopia was monitored in 1990-91. Monthly mosquito densities in over 300 houses were obtained, and the data for each month were plotted on maps, which indicated clustering of mosquitos within the village. Spatial analysis using "kriging" techniques demonstrated clustering towards the edges of the village, the pattern of which changed with time. For example, the low density of mosquitos in one area in September increased as the nearby irrigation canals dried up during the following months.

The mosquito gut microbiome and Plasmodium development: a scoping review of molecular approaches and implications for malaria vector control.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major health burden, with an estimated 282 million cases and approximately 610,000 deaths recorded in 2024. The increasing prevalence of insecticide-resistant Anopheles vectors and drug-resistant Plasmodium strains has substantially eroded the efficacy of conventional control strategies, underscoring the critical need for innovative approaches. Accumulating evidence suggest that the mosquito midgut microbiome exerts a significant influence on Plasmodium sporogonic development; however, no scoping investigation has fully mapped the metagenomic evidence base in this

The effect of ULV-based mosquito control on target and non-target organisms in Hungary: An experimental field study.

Ultra-low volume (ULV) insecticide spraying with deltamethrin as the active ingredient is widely used in mosquito control programs, yet its effectiveness against target mosquitoes and its ecological side effects remain poorly quantified under field conditions in Central Europe. Here, we experimentally evaluated the short-term impact of ground ULV spraying (using deltamethrin + Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium extract) on both mosquito populations and non-target flying insects in Hungary using a paired before-after-control-impact (BACI) design. Mosquitoes were sampled with BG Sentinel traps, whil…

Sterile insect technique with accidental releases of sterile females. Impact on mosquito-borne diseases control when viruses are circulating.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a technique to control some vectors of diseases by releasing sterile males. However, during these releases, sterilized females can be (accidentally) released and since only females are vectors of diseases, it is important to study their impact when arthropod viruses are circulating. To that aim, we develop and study an entomological-epidemiological model, considering either permanent or periodic releases. Qualitative analyses of the continuous and periodic models are conducted. We highlight a critical sterile males release rate, ΛMcrit, above which the con

Evaluation of a rapid analyte measurement platform for West Nile virus detection based on United States mosquito control programs.

The rapid analyte measurement platform (RAMP) system is an immunoassay test for West Nile virus (WNV) detection. Although reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) methodology has been regarded as the gold standard for confirming WNV presence, usage of RAMP testing kits has increased in the past years. We collected RAMP test result data that were subsequently confirmed with RT-PCR methodology from mosquito control agencies to evaluate the efficacy of the RAMP testing. Results indicate that there are a high number of false positives (RAMP positive, RT-PCR negative) with RAMP test…

Impact of polystyrene beads as a mosquito control measure to supplement lymphatic filariasis elimination activities in Socotra Island, Yemen.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is targeted for worldwide elimination. In Yemen, all mainland implementation units met the WHO criteria for stopping mass drug administration (MDA) after 5 rounds. However, in Socotra Island these criteria were not met. Our study evaluated the efficacy of applying expanded polystyrene beads (EPBs) on the Culex population and the effect on LF transmission. Human and mosquito surveys were conducted in 40 randomly selected households in Hadibo (capital of Socotra) before and after application of EPBs. The EPBs intervention resulted in a reduction in mosquito density of 8

Screening mosquito house entry points as a potential method for integrated control of endophagic filariasis, arbovirus and malaria vectors.

BACKGROUND: Partial mosquito-proofing of houses with screens and ceilings has the potential to reduce indoor densities of malaria mosquitoes. We wish to measure whether it will also reduce indoor densities of vectors of neglected tropical diseases. METHODOLOGY: The main house entry points preferred by anopheline and culicine vectors were determined through controlled experiments using specially designed experimental huts and village houses in Lupiro village, southern Tanzania. The benefit of screening different entry points (eaves, windows and doors) using PVC-coated fibre glass netting mater

The control of the diuresis following a blood meal in females of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (L).

Control of post-feeding diuresis in females of the mosquito Aëdes aegypti has been studied by means of a weighing technique and simple surgical procedures. The primary controlling factor is (as in the larva) a nervous feedback mechanism and not an increased production of diuretic hormone. As the mosquito ingests blood, sensory information from the distending abdomen reaches the mid gut via the nerve cord, brain and stomatogastric system. This information probably inhibits retroperistaltic movements of the mid gut allowing fluid from the Malpighian tubules (which seems to be produced continuall

Field trial finds promising evidence on Spinosad: a bio-larvicide for mosquito control in urban settings in Bengaluru, India.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are primary vectors for various diseases, with urban areas particularly vulnerable due to dense populations and favourable breeding conditions. In India, mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and lymphatic filariasis remain pressing public health concerns. This study assessed the effectiveness and longevity of Spinosad, a naturally derived bio-larvicide, as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional insecticides. METHODS: A large-scale field study, following WHO protocols, tested three Spinosad formulations - DT (7.48%), EC (20.6%), and G30 (2.5%) against Ae

The Citizen as a Public Health Actor: Complaints as Public Engagement with Aedes Mosquito Control in Singapore, 1965-1985.

In 1986, the World Health Organization heralded Singapore as a model for the control of dengue fever, a viral disease spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Between 1965 and 1985, public health officials successfully employed educational campaigns and mandatory home inspections to convince citizens to guard against mosquito breeding at home. Although this story appears to recapitulate standard narratives of top-down progress in Singapore, this paper argues that the significant role of the public in public health has been overlooked. Citizens complained frequently, sometimes publicly, to public

Parasite sources and sinks in a patched Ross-Macdonald malaria model with human and mosquito movement: Implications for control.

We consider the dynamics of a mosquito-transmitted pathogen in a multi-patch Ross-Macdonald malaria model with mobile human hosts, mobile vectors, and a heterogeneous environment. We show the existence of a globally stable steady state, and a threshold that determines whether a pathogen is either absent from all patches, or endemic and present at some level in all patches. Each patch is characterized by a local basic reproduction number, whose value predicts whether the disease is cleared or not when the patch is isolated: patches are known as "demographic sinks" if they have a local basic rep

Toxicological effects of prolonged and intense use of mosquito coil emission in rats and its implications on malaria control.

Mosquito coil is a vector control option used to prevent malaria in low income counties, while some studies have addressed this issue, additional reseach is required to increase knowledge on the adverse health effects caused by the prolonged use of coils. In this study we investigated the toxicological effects of fumes from two locally manufactured mosquito coil insecticides (with pyrethroids: transfluthrin and d-allethrin as active ingredients) on male albino rats. For this, we recorded the haematological and biochemical indices, and made histopathology and mutagenicity evaluations in rats ex

Control of follicular epithelium development and vitelline envelope formation in the mosquito; role of juvenile hormone and 20-hydroxyecdysone.

Using microsurgical manipulations, hormone applications, and transmission electron microscopy we have investigated the regulation of differentiation of the follicular epithelium and formation of the vitelline envelope (VE) in primary follicles in the ovary of the mosquito, Aedes aegypti. During the first 3 days after eclosion, the primary follicle grows, and cells of the follicular epithelium differentiate, their content of mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi complexes increases significantly. Growth and differentiation of the follicular epithelium appear to be under the contr
