Black Mothers, Exclusive Breastfeeding, and Nursing Care.

PURPOSE: Given persistent racial disparities, we examined whether exclusive breastmilk feeding rates are lower in hospitals with more Black women giving birth and whether nursing resources moderate racial disparities therein. DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study used 2016 survey data from RNs in 256 hospitals linked to hospital-level data in California, Florida, and New Jersey. Multivariable regression modeling examined the relationship between the percentage of Black women giving birth at a hospital and the Joint Commission's exclusive breastfeeding rates. Models adjusted for nurse

Neurocognitive response to fearful faces in mothers.

Emerging evidence highlights distinct neurocognitive adaptations during pregnancy and motherhood. This study investigated neural and cognitive responses to adult emotional expressions, focusing on fear and happiness, in 35 mothers with four-month-old infants and 19 control women without young children. Participants completed computerized tasks assessing accuracy in recognizing emotional facial expressions and underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while viewing fearful and happy adult faces. Compared to control women, mothers demonstrated heightened neural activation to fear versus ha

Echocardiographic Findings in Infants of Diabetic Mothers.

Background Maternal diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-established risk factor for congenital heart disease (CHD) in neonates. Despite advances in perinatal care, infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs) remain at increased risk for both structural lesions and functional cardiac changes. Objective To determine the prevalence and spectrum of echocardiographic abnormalities in neonates of diabetic mothers and compare them with matched controls. Methods A retrospective analytical study was conducted at King Fahad Hospital, Al Baha, from January 2024 to June 2025. Two hundred neonates (100 IDMs, 100 contr

Obstetric anal sphincter injury in adolescent mothers.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) is a debilitating complication of vaginal delivery which has yet to receive ample attention in adolescents. The aim of this study was to describe risk for OASI in adolescent mothers compared to adults. We further attempted to compare risk factors for OASI between these two age groups. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study between 2003 and 2019. Primiparous women who delivered vaginally, 21 years and younger were compared to women ages 26-35. Excluded were preterm, multifetal, non-vertex, cesarean deliveries as well as intrauterin

Cardiac changes in infants of diabetic mothers.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a systemic chronic metabolic disorder characterized by increased insulin resistance and/or β- cell defects. It affects all ages from the foetal life, neonates, childhood to late adulthood. Gestational diabetes is a critical risk factor for congenital heart diseases (CHDs). Moreover, the risk increases with low maternal education, high body mass index at conception, undiagnosed pre-gestational diabetes, inadequate antenatal care, improper diabetes control, and maternal smoking during pregnancy. Maternal DM significantly affects the foetal heart and foetal-placental cir

Fathers' Imprisonment and Mothers' Multiple-Partner Fertility.

We consider the intersection between two striking U.S. trends: dramatic increases in the imprisonment of fathers and increases in the proportion of mothers who have children with more than one partner (multiple-partner fertility, or MPF). Using matched longitudinal administrative data that provide unusually comprehensive and accurate information about the occurrence and timing of imprisonment, fertility, and MPF for the population of the state of Wisconsin, we consider the relationship between paternal imprisonment and MPF among unwed mothers. Employing discrete-time event history analysis wit

Self-Reported Health Among Recently Incarcerated Mothers.

OBJECTIVES: We examined self-reported health among formerly incarcerated mothers. METHODS: We used data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 4096), a longitudinal survey of mostly unmarried parents in urban areas, to estimate the association between recent incarceration (measured as any incarceration in the past 4 years) and 5 self-reported health conditions (depression, illicit drug use, heavy drinking, fair or poor health, and health limitations), net of covariates including health before incarceration. RESULTS: In adjusted logistic regression models, recently incarcera

Mothers' experience of having children with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a major health problem, which has a wide prevalence in the world. There is no sign of its stopping, but it is increasing. Diabetes in children is three to four times more common than other childhood diseases. Diagnosis of diabetes for children causes emotional responses in parents and family members. Interventions for children with diabetes involve the family, child, and professionals including physicians, nurses, and nutritionist. Self-care is difficult without direct parents' participation. According to studies, burden of diabetes for mothers is more than for fathers.

Mating behaviour: promiscuous mothers have healthier young.

A small marsupial has thrown new light on the question of why females typically mate with several males: promiscuous female antechinuses have many more surviving offspring because males that are successful in sperm competition also sire healthy offspring.

Supporting breastfeeding mothers in hospital: part 1.

Breastfeeding makes a vital contribution to the health and development of babies, as well as to long term health. Establishing breastfeeding may not be easy even for mothers with healthy full-term babies. Mothers in the paediatric environment experience additional challenges: sick babies, delayed onset of breastfeeding and having to establish and maintain breastfeeding in situations where privacy may be limited and anxiety levels high. This first part of a two-part article describes the development of a breastfeeding support service in a tertiary children's hospital. Institutional support, a d

Home-based support for disadvantaged adult mothers.

BACKGROUND: Babies born to socio-economically disadvantaged mothers are at higher risk of a range of problems in infancy. Home visiting programs are thought to improve outcomes, both for mothers and children, largely through advice and support. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of home visiting programmes for women who have recently given birth and who are socially or economically disadvantaged. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the following electronic databases: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (Issue 3, 2006); MEDLINE (1966 to March 2006); EMBASE (1980 to 2006

Mothers' help-seeking for pediatric psychosocial problems.

Pediatricians have been criticized for failing to identify psychosocial problems in their pediatric patients. Maternal disclosure is important for identification; however, many mothers fail to discuss their concerns with the pediatrician. The present study explored the hypothesis that mothers are seeking and receiving help from sources other than the pediatrician. Participants were 50 mothers who brought their 4-13-year-old child for a routine health supervision visit at a county-funded hospital serving primarily low-income families. Results indicated that mothers actively seek help from multi

Infant health of mothers with multiple sclerosis.

Controversy surrounds whether mothers with multiple sclerosis (MS) who wish to breast-feed their infants should forego breast-feeding in order to resume immunomodulating therapy following birth even though breast-feeding has not been shown to have deleterious effects on these mothers. Knowledge of potential health benefits to infants through breast-feeding could influence health care providers to encourage mothers with MS who wish to breast-feed to do so. This study of 140 breast-feeding and 35 non-breast-feeding mothers with MS identifies the type and prevalence of illnesses experienced by th

Evaluation of halitosis in children and mothers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence and clinical parameters that are associated with halitosis in pediatric dental patients and compare these findings with those found for the patients' mother. METHODS: Children aged 5 to 12 years old were evaluated with mothers present during a dental visit. Each mother completed the child's medical history and a breath odor questionnaire. The mother and an oral breath judge (OBJ) evaluated the child's oral breath using organoleptic methods. A commercial breath analyzer (CBA) measured the oral and nasal levels of volatile sul
