[Evaluation on our procedure for autotransplantation of parathyroid glands by the intact-PTH].

In thyroid cancer surgery since 1978 we have made parathyroidal autotransplantation which has been to resect the entire parathyroid, cut fine to mud and autotransplant into greater pectoral muscle. To evaluate our procedure and consider the mechanism of hypocalcemia and tetanus following surgery, we examined the intact-PTH recovered to about 80% of its preoperative value on 14-postoperative-days and thereafter remained almost constant. It remained below the sensitivity of measurement from immediately to 3-postoperative-days, and with our procedure, parathyroid was considered to be totally rese

Mud-bath treatment in spondylitis associated with inflammatory bowel disease--a pilot randomised clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects and the tolerability of mud packs and thermal baths in a group of patients affected with this disease. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with spondylitis and Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, treated with 5-ASA or sulfasalazine, were randomised and assessed by an investigator independent from the spa staff: 12 were submitted to a cycle of mud-bath treatment (12 mud packs and 12 thermal baths over a period of two weeks) and 12 were enrolled as controls. Patients were evaluated by BASDAI, BASFI, BAS-G and VAS for back pain bef

[A comparative evaluation of the effect of different types of sapropel on dynamic liver function in intact rats and in the modelling of toxic hepatitis].

A course of silicic sapropel applications compared to calcareous sapropel induced a reversible fall of total lipid concentration in blood serum of intact rats. Sapropels of different kinds and of the same kind but obtained from different depths of the same deposit varied by their ability to correct hepatic function in rats with toxic hepatitis. The highest benefit was registered in application of carbonate sapropels taken from the depth of 1.5-2.5 m.

Short-term benefits of balneotherapy for patients with chronic pelvic pain: a pilot study in Korea.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether balneotherapy might be effective in patients with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) in the short term. This was an open and prospective pilot study. The balneotherapy programme was performed in a spa resort located in Wando Island, Republic of Korea from August 26 2018 to September 1 2018. It consisted of 10 heated seawater baths (38 °C, 20 minutes) and 10 mud-pack applications (40 °C, 10 minutes) for five days. Sixteen patients were enrolled. Upon analysing responses from a patient questionnaire, we found improvement in parameters such as pain, bladder ir

Incidence of hemorrhagic cystitis following unmanipulated peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in acute Leukemia: A retrospective single-center risk factor analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is an important adverse event experienced after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Severe HC could lead to significant morbidity, prolonged hospitalization with increased health-care costs, and may cause considerable mortality. OBJECTIVES: In order to investigate the influence of different contributing factors other than BK viruria on HC occurrence in a homogenous population, we retrospectively analyzed the potential risk factors. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective study among 200 patients (median age 12.4 years, IQR: 7.9-16.1) with

CD34+/CD3+ cells ratio in the peripheral blood stem cells product and graft-versus-host disease: Is there still room for improvement?

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (allo-HSC) transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a therapy of choice for patients requiring total bone marrow replacement. One of the critical issues is optimizing the number of allo-HSCs for successful outcomes, measured by the engraftment time and the incidence/severity of graft versus host disease (GvHD). We evaluated engraftment time and GvHD in comparison to the composition of infused CD34+ immature HSCs and CD3+ T cells in all-HSCTs. The study evaluated 97 patients with allo-HSCT from matched related (group MRD; n = 40), matched unrelated (group MUD; n = 28),

Mechanistic Intimate Insights into the Role of Hydrogen Sulfide in Alzheimer's Disease: A Recent Systematic Review.

In the rapidly evolving field of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) research, the intricate role of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) has garnered critical attention for its diverse involvement in both pathological substrates and prospective therapeutic paradigms. While conventional pathophysiological models of AD have primarily emphasized the significance of amyloid-beta (Aβ) deposition and tau protein hyperphosphorylation, this targeted systematic review meticulously aggregates and rigorously appraises seminal contributions from the past year elucidating the complex mechanisms of H2S in AD pathogenesis. Current

Development of immunity against hepatitis B virus after donor lymphocyte infusion in a peripheral blood stem cell transplantation recipient with chronic hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the main concerns in blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) patients for possible breakthrough hepatitis. Active recipient immunization against HBV was found to be ineffective and many studies had showed that the adoptive transfer of immunity against hepatitis B virus would be possible by BMT with unknown duration and mechanism. A 46-year-old female patient with chronic hepatitis B had persistent detectable HBV DNA and positive serum hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), even while on long-term lamivudine and adefovir therapy. She received allogeneic matche

Post-transplant relapse of therapy-related MDS as gastric myeloid sarcoma: Case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) are hematologic neoplasms characterized by morphologic dysplasia and ineffective hematopoiesis in the bone marrow. The only potentially curative therapy is stem cell transplant. However, relapse remains a major challenge and is seen in about 25-40% of cases. Myeloid sarcoma presenting as relapse post allogeneic transplant for myeloid neoplasms is rare. We report the sentinel case of a patient with MDS who relapsed as gastric myeloid sarcoma 1 ½ years after allogeneic stem cell transplant. CASE PRESENTATION: Sixty-nine-year-old male who was diagnose

Histological evaluation of the healing properties of Dead Sea black mud on full-thickness excision cutaneous wounds in BALB/c mice.

Dead Sea (DS) mud and salts are known for their therapeutic and cosmetic properties. Previous studies confirmed their efficacy in treating the more frequent skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the wound healing potential of natural and compounded skin-care product (facial mask) of DS black mud in BALB/c mice. Two full-thickness excision round wounds were created on the dorsum region of mouse. Each wound of mice test group were treated topically with 50 microL of 0.1% natural or compounded DS black mud or 50 microL of 0.2% nitrofurazone

High activity of the new myeloablative regimen of gemcitabine/clofarabine/busulfan for allogeneic transplant for aggressive lymphomas.

Refractory aggressive lymphomas can be treated with allo-SCT, pursuing a graft-vs-lymphoma effect. While reduced intensity conditioning is safe, tumors often progress rapidly, indicating the need for more active conditioning regimens. The preclinical synergy we saw between gemcitabine (Gem), clofarabine (Clo) and busulfan (Bu) against lymphoma cell lines led us to study Gem/Clo/Bu clinically. Eligibility: age 12-65, refractory aggressive B-NHL, T-NHL or Hodgkin, with a matched donor. Infusional Gem was dose-escalated on days (d) -6 and -4 (475-975 mg/m2/day), followed by Clo (40 mg/m2/day) and

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Hepatitis-associated Aplastic Anemia Following Liver Transplantation for Nonviral Hepatitis: A Retrospective Analysis and a Review of the Literature by the Severe Aplastic Anemia Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (HAAA) has been reported in 23% to 33% of patients who received orthotopic liver transplantation (LT) for acute liver disease of unknown origin (nonviral hepatitis). In this situation, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) might be a curative option. Here the authors report on 6 patients who received HSCT after LT for nonviral HAAA hepatitis. The outcomes were interpreted in the context of recently reported immune suppressive therapy (IST) outcomes in 8 patients with HAAA and to HSCT outcomes in patients with HAAA who recovered from hepatitis witho

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation for patients with relapsed or refractory T-cell lymphoma: efficacy of lymphoma-directed conditioning against advanced disease.

Salvage chemotherapy induces disease remissions in patients with relapsed or refractory (r/r) T-cell lymphomas, but fails to provide lasting tumor control. We analyzed the outcome after peripheral blood stem and bone marrow transplantation (PBSCT, n = 80; BMT, n = 4) from matched related (MRD, n = 22) or matched and unmatched unrelated donors (MUD and MMD, n = 53 and n = 9, respectively) following conditioning with fludarabine, busulfan, and cyclophosphamide (FBC) for 84 consecutive patients with r/r T-cell malignancies. At start of conditioning LDH was elevated in 50% of cases, and residual t

Peripheral Blood or Bone Marrow Grafts for Mismatched Unrelated Donors with Post-Transplantation Cyclophosphamide-Based Graft-versus-Host Disease Prophylaxis.

Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) grafts generally are considered a risk factor for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) compared to bone marrow (BM) in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). High-dose post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy), originally introduced for T cell-replete haploidentical transplantation, has become more widely used in matched unrelated donor (MUD) and mismatched unrelated donor (MMUD) HCT with PBSCs and has been shown to reduce the difference between MUDs and MMUDs. Despite this progress, the comparative impact of PBSC grafts versus BM grafts in this specific set

A Novel Approach to Prognostic Factors and Risk Stratification in Pediatric AML: Case Report and Literature Review.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the second most common type of leukemia in children, is a heterogeneous disease known to be caused by genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptional changes, predominantly somatic and germline abnormalities. Despite significant improvement of overall survival rates, the prognosis of pediatric AML remains unfavorable in comparison with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), especially in relapsed or refractory settings. The current status and future directions are focused on establishing an accurate diagnosis and treatment strategies based on the genomic background. Next-ge
