Four accessory (supernumerary) intrathoracic ribs: a case report.

Accessory (supernumerary) intrathoracic ribs are a very rare congenital disorder. Here, we present the first case of multiple supernumerary intrathoracic ribs in an adult, which are present consecutively between ribs 1 and 4 and without articulation with the vertebrae. Despite this, anatomical variation is usually silent and accidentally discovered; its knowledge can prevent confusion with other structures during imaging diagnostic techniques of thoracic pathologies.

Bilateral congenital separation of the lateral meniscus. A case report.

Reports of congenital abnormalities of the lateral meniscus include discoid meniscus, accessory meniscus, double-layered meniscus and ring-shaped meniscus. We present a rare case of an unusual abnormality of the bilateral lateral meniscus, which was completely separated and duplicated at the midportion, although different from an accessory meniscus, with an anomaly of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus as well as a double-layered medial meniscus. This type of abnormality of the lateral meniscus and double-layered medial meniscus has not previously been described in the literature. We hav

Discoid lateral meniscus: diagnosis and results of arthroscopic treatment.

We evaluated the results of arthroscopic meniscectomy in patients with discoid lateral menisci of the knee. Discoid lateral menisci were detected in 308 patients, of whom 197 (124 males, 73 females; mean age 34.5 years, range 6-67) were clinically, radiologically, and arthroscopically found to be symptomatic and underwent partial meniscectomy. The average period between injury and operation was 13.2 months (range 6-52). The results were evaluated according to the Ikeuchi and Lysholm criteria. The mean follow-up was 57.8 months (range 24-138). The most common complaints were pain (66%) and join

Discoid lateral meniscus in children.

The discoid meniscus is the most common abnormal meniscal variant in children. It is most likely a congenital deviation and usually occurs laterally. The discoid shape results in greater coverage of the tibia and usually is associated with increased thickness of the meniscus that may lead to abnormal shearing forces across the knee joint. The Watanabe classification divides this anomaly into three distinct types: complete, incomplete, and Wrisberg ligament. The complete and incomplete types are often asymptomatic; unless symptomatic, they generally should be left alone. Tears should be treated

A 1-Day-Old Girl With Infantile Hemangioma and Sternal Cleft.

A newborn girl presented to the hospital on the first day of life because of respiratory failure. She was born at home at 37 weeks' gestation with minimal prenatal care and was found to be small for gestational age. The patient was found to have partial sternal agenesis and sternal cleft, cutis aplasia, left facial hemangioma, micrognathia, wide-spaced nipples, and low-set ears. The mother's and baby's urine toxicology screening were positive for amphetamines. Chest radiographs on admission showed bilateral hazy opacities. CT scan of the chest showed an absent sternum with midline chest wall c

Induction of a thoracolumbar supernumerary rib in rat developmental toxicity studies: A short discussion on the critical window.

Thoracolumbar supernumerary ribs (TSRs) are classified as less severe skeletal anomalies in rat developmental toxicity studies, although their incidence is relatively high in rodent studies. To investigate the characteristics of the critical window for chemically-induced TSR, in this study, rats were administered 5-fluorocytocine (5-FC) or sodium salicylate (SAL) at one of three time periods on gestational day (GD) 9, early morning (7:00 am), midday (12:00 pm to 1:00 pm), or late afternoon (4:00 pm or 7:00 pm). The incidence of TSR and other anomalies were assessed in GD20 fetuses. A single tr

[Epidemiological aspects of study of musculoskeletal diseases in children (in case of the Perm Region)].

There is a steady tendency for musculoskeletal abnormalities to increase in children and adolescents in the Perm Territory. In 75% of the towns of the Perm Territory and in half of the rural areas, the prevalence of musculoskeletal abnormalities, revealed during the 2002-2005 All-Russian clinical examination of children, was 1.03-3.9 times as high as the official morbidity rates. Among locomotor diseases, there was a preponderance of lower extremity deformities, kyphosis, lordosis, and scoliosis. Osteodensitometric studies demonstrated that osteopenia is more common in urban dwellers than in v…

Combined Urogenital and Musculoskeletal Malformations in a Dog: A Case Report.

A dog was examined due to urinary incontinence. On physical exam a bipartite scrotum, hypospadias, and hypodontia were observed. Retrograde cystourethrography and abdominal ultrasonography revealed bilateral ectopic ureters and renal dysplasia, respectively. The hypospadias and ectopic ureters were surgically corrected, and the patient's renal disease and recurrent urinary tract infections were medically managed over the next several months. This paper describes possible embryological etiologies for this unique case.

Crane-Heise syndrome: two further case reports.

Crane-Heise syndrome is a rare lethal and autosomal recessive condition which has been first reported in 1981 in three siblings presenting intrauterine growth retardation, a poorly mineralised calvarium, characteristic facial features comprising cleft lip and palate, hypertelorism, anteverted nares, low-set and posteriorly rotated ears, vertebral anomalies and absent clavicles. Since then, to our knowledge, only one isolated case and two siblings were reported with similar findings. We present two further cases, diagnosed after termination of pregnancy at 24 weeks' gestation in one case and st

Routine obstetrical ultrasound at 18-22 weeks: our experience on 7,236 fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at examining the detection rate of congenital abnormalities by using routine ultrasonography at 18-22 weeks of gestation. METHODS: The sample included 7,236 fetuses. A detailed sonographic examination was performed in each fetus and a neonatal evaluation or pathology examination was made to confirm the prenatal findings. RESULTS: The total prevalence of fetal abnormalities in our sample was 2.24% (162/7,236). There were 29/162 (17.9%) fetuses with CNS abnormalities, 27/162 (16.7%) fetuses with gastrointestinal abnormalities, and 28/162 (17.3%) fetuses with urinary

Monotherapy treatment of epilepsy in pregnancy: congenital malformation outcomes in the child.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that certain antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are teratogenic and are associated with an increased risk of congenital malformation. The majority of women with epilepsy continue taking AEDs throughout pregnancy; therefore it is important that comprehensive information on the potential risks associated with AED treatment is available. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of prenatal exposure to AEDs on the prevalence of congenital malformations in the child. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Epilepsy Group Specialized Register (September 2015), Cochrane Central Regi
