We report four cases of focal myositis. The patients, three men and one woman, had painful muscle hypertrophy, affecting four different sites. MRI confirmed the muscle enlargement and oedema. Electromyography revealed evidence of acute and chronic denervation in all four cases. Muscle biopsy was available in three and confirmed features suggestive of focal myositis. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and laboratory features of benign acute childhood myositis.
METHODS: 40 children of BACM were seen during October 2001 to February 2002, 22 (52%) were male with mean age of 5.3 years. Duration of illness was 3.97 days. Preceding symptoms included fever, leg pain, vomiting and inability to walk. A provisional diagnosis of viral myositis was made in 26 (66%). Guillian Barre Syndrome was the most common referral diagnosis.

Muscle related side effects of statins might be more frequent than once considered. Without affecting CK, they appear in various forms. A seven-year-old boy with mental retardation and congenital skeletal malformations in the thumbs and big toes developed recurrent lumps in the shoulder and interscapular region. Idiopathic acute orbital myositis is a subgroup of inflammatory orbital pseudotumor. The case of a 35 year-old woman who suffered a left ocular pain with eyelid swelling, conjunctival hyperemia and limitation of abduction of the left eye is reported. CT showed an enlargement of the left medial rectus muscle enhanced with contrast. The pathogenesis remained obscure. The evolution was favourable with corticosteroids.

An acute relapsing orbital inflammatory disease predominantly affecting the extraocular muscles was seen in two patients and is reported here as acute recurrent orbital myositis. The association of this disorder with other systemic diseases such as asthma, sinusitis, upper respiratory infection, Crohn's disease, and serum sickness is discussed. The similarities to other forms of acute orbital inflammatory disease such as orbital pseudotumor are noted, and a possible underlying immunologic mechanism is suggested.

Four school children, aged 6 to 9 years, had acute postinfectious myositis. The prodromal illness usually involved the upper respiratory tract, but gastrointestinal symptoms were also seen. Fever and nonspecific malaise were characteristic. After cessation of the illness, myalgia involved the calves and thighs. Arm and neck muscles were less frequently affected.
