We studied changes in NAC in 17 ragweed-sensitive individuals after intranasal ragweed-challenge testing. All patients experienced immediate symptoms of sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion that were associated with marked decreases in NAC (mean = 68%). In 10 trials patients also experienced late (greater than 0 hr) symptoms of nasal congestion with or without rhinorrhea; the mean late NAC decrease in this group was 42%. The inhabitants of a fruit growing area often report spontaneously of sensitization to the red spider mite (RSM) (Panonychus ulmi KOCH). These are for the most part sensitizations with low clinical symptoms (rhinitis, conjunctivitis and erythema). Severe clinical developments with bronchial asthma have been observed. Occupational respiratory allergy to green coffee beans in coffee roastery workers is well established. I now report on a 50-year-old female atopic patient sensitized to the coffee plant used for indoor decoration. The symptoms were rhinitis and conjunctivitis on exposure to the plant. Investigation showed a positive skin prick test, RAST, and rhinoconjunctival provocation test to coffee leaf allergen extract. However, the commercially available RAST disk for green coffee beans seems to be appropriate for diagnosing allergy to the potted coffee plant.
