Examination of spatial polygamy among young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in New York City: the P18 cohort study.

The few previous studies examining the influence of the neighborhood context on health and health behavior among young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) have predominantly focused on residential neighborhoods. No studies have examined multiple neighborhood contexts among YMSM or the relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, psychosocial factors, social support network characteristics, health behaviors, and neighborhood concordance. In this study, we assessed spatial polygamy by determining the amount of concordance between residential, social, and sex neig

Living alone and all-cause mortality in community-dwelling older adults: The moderating role of perceived neighborhood cohesion.

OBJECTIVES: The adverse effect of living alone on health has been well-documented in community-dwelling older adults. A less understood topic in this research area is whether some neighborhood characteristics may mitigate the negative impact of living alone on health outcomes and mortality. This study aimed to extend the existing work on living arrangements and health by examining the potential interactive effect of living alone and perceived neighborhood cohesion on all-cause mortality among older Chinese Americans. METHODS: Data were drawn from 3154 (58.0% female) participants from a prospe

Aggravating conditions: cynical hostility and neighborhood ambient stressors.

This study is the first to investigate neighborhood clustering of a personality trait--cynical hostility (a sense of mistrust of others amplified by suspicious antagonism.) Cynical hostility increases physiological reactivity by influencing appraisal and coping when stressful events occur and that has been well established as a predictor of cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and all-cause mortality. The analysis examines the associations of a variety of neighborhood physical and social conditions (especially ambient stressors) with individual cynical hostility, controlling for individual so

Geography of underweight and overweight among women in India: a multilevel analysis of 3204 neighborhoods in 26 states.

We investigated the geographic distribution and the relationship with neighborhood wealth of underweight and overweight in India. Using multilevel modeling techniques, we calculated state-specific smoothed shrunken state residuals of overweight and underweight, neighborhood and state variation of nutritional status, and the relationships between neighborhood wealth and nutritional status of 76,681 women living in 3204 neighborhoods in 26 Indian states. We found a substantial variation in overweight and underweight at the neighborhood and state levels, net of what could be attributed to individ

Individual- and neighborhood-level factors influencing diet quality: a multilevel analysis using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, 2010-2019.

OBJECTIVES: Although environmental factors influence lifestyle choices, few studies have examined how individual-level and neighborhood-level socio-demographic factors interact to affect diet quality in Korea. We investigated the associations between multilevel factors and diet quality among Korean adults and explored potential interactions by gender and age. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 42,035 adults from 1,671 towns using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2019) and the Population and Housing Census of Korea (2010-2019). Neighborhood influences on the academic achievement of extremely low birth weight children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine neighborhood effects on academic achievement of children with extremely low birth weight (ELBW <1000 g) and normal birth weight (NBW) controls. METHODS: The study included 183 8-year-old children with ELBW born during 1992-1995 and 176 sociodemographically similar NBW controls. Academic achievement was measured via The Woodcock-Johnson III Academic Skills Cluster. RESULTS: Children with ELBW had significantly lower achievement scores (89 +/- 16 vs. 97 +/- 13). A multilevel estimation of predictors of academic achievement revealed that neighborhood poverty was significan

Association Between Physical Function and Neighborhood Environment in Healthy, Older Adults: An Exploratory Study Using Regression Tree Analysis.

The aim of this study was to perform an exploratory investigation of the individual characteristics of older adults that affect the relationships between physical function and neighborhood environment. A total of 624 community-dwelling older adults living independently, aged ≥65 years, participated in this cross-sectional study. Physical function was assessed by muscle strength (grip strength and knee extension strength) and physical performance (5-m walking time and Timed Up and Go Test). The neighborhood environment was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Environ

Residential greenness and wellbeing in the UK: A population-representative intersectional multilevel analysis.

Residential greenness may support wellbeing, but evidence on whether these benefits differ across socially patterned populations remains limited. We examined associations between residential greenness and wellbeing across population strata defined by sex, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) based on data on urban residents from the UK Household Longitudinal Study, a population-representative and ethnically diverse sample from the UK (n = 26,322). Residential greenness was measured using neighbourhood Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI); wellbeing was operationalised as self-rep

The longitudinal association between living in socially fragmented neighbourhoods and psychological distress among middle aged adults in Brisbane, Australia.

OBJECTIVE: Addressing social determinants of affective disorders is increasingly recognised as a major priority in mental health. This longitudinal study aimed to examine the effect of neighbourhood social fragmentation on psychological distress among mid-to-older aged (40-65 yrs) community dwelling men and women over time. METHODS: We analysed changes in psychological distress across four time points (2009-2016) using data from HABITAT, a population-representative longitudinal study of adults aged 40-65 in Brisbane, Australia. The analytic sample included 2902 men and 3950 women who complete

The Modifying Effect of Individual-Level Neighborhood Perceptions on the Relationship Between Census-Level Neighborhood Social Vulnerability and Cognition in Older Latinos.

Residents of vulnerable neighborhoods show lower levels of, and faster longitudinal declines in cognition across most, but not all studies. Mixed results may exist, in part, because residents' self-reported (individual-level) perceptions of their neighborhood do not always reflect Census-level measurements. We investigated both types of neighborhood characteristics to reexamine previously reported null associations between neighborhood vulnerability and cognition within an interactive socio-environmental framework. Self-identified Latinos (N = 224; x¯age = 70.4) without dementia completed a mo

A community case study of pedestrian environment features of neighborhood walkability and built environment-related 311 service requests surrounding public housing developments serving low-income Boston residents.

Physical activity is a modifiable health behavior influenced by neighborhood walkability. In-person field audits of pedestrian environment features of neighborhood walkability were conducted at the start of an ongoing multilevel, multicomponent physical activity promotion intervention called Community Walks, taking place in 12 low-income public housing developments (PHDs) in Boston, MA, USA. Following these audits, we then explored alternative, remote methods of walkability assessment. One option is the publicly available database of service requests submitted by individuals in municipalities

Dual Epidemics in Toronto: Shared and Divergent Neighborhood Risks of COVID-19 and Opioid Mortality from a Joint Spatial and Temporal Analysis.

Toronto experienced two overlapping public health emergencies during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a surge in opioid-related mortality. We assess how these mortality risks co-occurred and diverged across 158 neighborhoods from January 2020 to April 2023. We analyze monthly deaths using a joint Bayesian modeling framework with shared and outcome-specific spatial, temporal, and space-time interaction components. Neighborhood socioeconomic covariates include visible minority, low income, educational attainment, core housing need, and age structure. Our results identify spatial and temporal variatio

Association Between Changes in Perceived Neighborhood and Cognitive Performance Within Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span (HANDLS) Black Adults.

Perceived neighborhood characteristics are related to cognitive performance. However, limited studies have examined how changes in neighborhood characteristics relate to cognitive performance, particularly among Black adults who are likely to experience changes in their residential social and physical environments. This study examined the association between changes in perceived neighborhood quality and concurrent, cross-sectional cognitive performance. An analytic sample of 592 Black adults (Mage = 56.22; 58% female) recruited from 13 predetermined neighborhoods in Baltimore City, Maryland, f

Precision greenness exposure is associated with lung cancer risk in medicare beneficiaries.

PURPOSE: This study examines whether lung cancer risk is influenced by block-level greenness, controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, area deprivation index (ADI), and walkability in older adults, and whether age, sex, race/ethnicity, ADI, or walkability plays a moderating role in this relationship. METHODS: Data from US Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 years and older were included for the years 2011 and 2016. Beneficiaries included in this study received a lung cancer diagnosis for the first time between 2012 and 2016. All resided in Miami-Dade County, Florida (Mage = 74.31 ± 6.95, 58.69% f

Neighborhood Disinvestment Predicts Shorter Cancer Survival Time among Black Women Diagnosed with Invasive Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Observed neighborhood disinvestment is a chronic social determinant that is understudied in relation to cancer outcomes. This study investigated associations between neighborhood disinvestment, stage at diagnosis, and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) time. METHODS: Individual-level data included 844 women, diagnosed 2013 to 2019, from the Women's Circle of Health Follow-up Study, a population-based cohort of breast cancer survivors self-identifying as Black or African American. Neighborhood disinvestment was from a virtual audit of six indicators-garbage, graffiti, dumpsters

Neighborhood Sociodemographic Correlates of Cannabis Dispensary Availability in States with Legalized Adult Recreational Use, United States, 2021.

Introduction: The availability of recreational cannabis in the United States has increased dramatically. Neighborhood cannabis dispensary availability may increase problematic use. State and local studies suggest that cannabis dispensary availability may be correlated with neighborhood sociodemographic characteristics. We provide a national-level examination of census tract (CT) sociodemographic characteristic correlates with the availability of cannabis dispensaries in 18 U.S. states that have legalized adult recreational cannabis use. Methods: We downloaded the locations of cannabis dispensa

Health practices and neighborhood experiences among young adults living alone under housing poverty in Seoul, South Korea.

Housing poverty increasingly exposes young adults to insecure and inadequate living conditions that undermine health and well-being. This study examined how young adults living alone under housing poverty in Seoul define and practice health in daily life, adapt to inadequate housing, and interpret their neighborhood environments in relation to well-being. A qualitative exploratory design was employed, using in-depth interviews with 44 participants aged 19-39 who met policy-based criteria for housing poverty in South Korea. Interviews explored daily routines, understandings of healthy living, t

Pushing the boundary of child well-being: A spatial examination of child mortality in transition zones of extreme economic inequality and material hardship.

How do patterns of socioeconomic inequality shape the risk of child fatality in urban areas? Research has shown that both intentional and unintentional child deaths are concentrated in areas of social disadvantage. Yet in densely populated cities, child fatality risk may not follow smooth spatial patterns and instead exhibit abrupt shifts across neighborhood boundaries. This study applies a dissimilarity-based Bayesian spatial conditional autoregressive (CAR) model to detect localized discontinuities in child mortality risk associated with structural inequality. Using a continuous dissimilarit
