Epstein-Barr virus associated lymphoproliferative disease after autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) has rarely been reported. We report a case of B-cell lymphoma following ABMT for T-acute lymphoblastic leukaemia; bone marrow was purged in vitro with monoclonal antibodies to remove T cells. Immunoglobulin and T-cell receptor gene rearrangement studies were used to demonstrate clonality and to show that this patient developed a second neoplasm after ABMT. EBV proteins and genome (type A) were present in post-transplantation lymphoma, suggesting a causative role in its development.

Primary plasma cell leukaemia (PPCL) is a rare form of plasma cell neoplasm. Treatments of PPCL have been most disappointing. A patient with PPCL received high-dose melphalan plus total body irradiation and autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT). By using third-complementarity-determining region (CDRIII)-specific probes, minimal residual disease (MRD) was detected in remission marrow, collected 1 month before ABMT. MRD was no longer detected by CDRIII-specific probes 6, 19 and 26 months after transplantation. The patient remained in complete remission up to 59 months after ABMT.

BACKGROUND: Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a life-threatening complication of solid organ transplantation. Histologic heterogeneity and a lack of treatment standards have made evaluating clinical outcomes in specific patient populations difficult. This systematic literature review investigated the impact of the PTLD histologic subtype on survival in a large data set.
METHODS: Case series were identified on PubMed with the search terms post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder/disease, PTLD, and solid organ transplantation, with additional publications identified thro

INTRODUCTION: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) are hematologic neoplasms characterized by morphologic dysplasia and ineffective hematopoiesis in the bone marrow. The only potentially curative therapy is stem cell transplant. However, relapse remains a major challenge and is seen in about 25-40% of cases. Myeloid sarcoma presenting as relapse post allogeneic transplant for myeloid neoplasms is rare. We report the sentinel case of a patient with MDS who relapsed as gastric myeloid sarcoma 1 ½ years after allogeneic stem cell transplant.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence, time of appearance, treatment, and evolution of tumors appearing in liver transplant recipients at our hospital.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We undertook a retrospective analysis of our series of liver transplants between 1990 and 2005. Patients who died during the immediate postoperative period were excluded.
RESULTS: Of the 515 patients, 25 died during the immediate postoperative period and therefore had no occasion to develop neoplasms. Of the remaining 490, 32 developed cancers (6.5%). The average age was 55.4 +/- 7.17 years. The reasons for transplant

Patients with Muir-Torre syndrome may have a systemic malignancy and a sebaceous neoplasm such as an adenoma, epithelioma, and/or carcinoma. The syndrome usually results from a germline mutation in one or more mismatch repair genes. Iatrogenic or acquired immunosuppression can promote the appearance of sebaceous tumors, either as an isolated event or as a feature of Muir-Torre syndrome and may unmask individuals genetically predisposed to the syndrome. Two iatrogenically immunosuppressed men with Muir-Torre syndrome features are described. Similar to these immunocompromised men, Muir-Torre syn

The synchronous presentation of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and multiple myeloma (MM) is extremely rare. CML is a myeloproliferative neoplasm originating from an abnormal pluripotent hematopoietic stem cell. It is associated with the BCR-ABL fusion gene located on the Philadelphia chromosome. In contrast, multiple myeloma is a multifocal, bone marrow-based plasma cell neoplasm associated with the production of M-protein in the serum and/or urine. We present a case with a synchronous diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia and multiple myeloma. Both cancers were aggressively treated. The patie

BACKGROUND: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive skin disease. The ocular manifestations in XP patients usually include severe photophobia, conjunctivitis, corneal opacification, ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) which often appears in the palpebral fissure area. In addition, there are other accompanying ocular surface lesions that require clinical attention.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a unique case of Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) with a progressive corneoscleral neoplasm, which become bigger during 6 years of follow-up. The patient was diagnosed with corneoscleral

Since 1976, we have transplanted 82 urological neoplasms into nude mice, 46 of which (56%) took. Thirty five of them (43% of the total tumors) are being serially transplanted. This rate of success seems to be better than that obtained at other institutes for both neoplasms of urogenital as well as other tissue origin. The explants basically retained the original characteristics of the native tumors not only in histological pattern but also in tumor markers, even after a long term period of heterotransplantation. However, the histological features of some tumor lines seemed to be reduced. A cer

Of 46 liver transplantations performed, 15 patients are alive at follow-up intervals from 2 to 50 months. The most common indications for liver transplantation were biliary atresia, cirrhosis, and neoplasia. About 50% of the patients had pre- and/or postoperative angiograms. Additional material was available from pretransplant workups in patients subsequently shown to be unsuitable for transplantation. Of 13 preoperative angiographic studies, portal vein patency was confirmed in two, inferior vena caval (IVC) patency was confirmed in two, and diffuse neoplasm was identified in three. These pat

A 24-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with abdominal distension. He was found to have acute liver failure and diagnosed with Budd-Chiari syndrome based on angiography and liver biopsy. Liver transplantation was deemed necessary when angiography showed extensive thrombotic occlusion of the hepatic veins and liver biopsy revealed submassive hepatic necrosis. The patient was found to have the JAK2V617F mutation, indicating a myeloproliferative neoplasm as the background disease. He developed hepatic encephalopathy but remained conscious on on-line hemodiafiltration. Brain-dead donor live

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma is a follicular T-helper-derived neoplasm displaying a peculiar morphologic appearance and biological complexity. New mutations have been described that contribute to elucidating the underlying pathogenetic events. The disease behaves aggressively and typically affects elderly patients. The outcomes reported with anthracycline-containing regimens are poor; therefore autologous transplantation in first remission should be offered whenever possible. Newer approaches are urgently needed for relapsed and refractory patients. Newly approved agents show activity in

Anthracycline antibiotics are an effective therapy for a variety of neoplastic diseases. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a known risk of their use. Because of the risk of new or recurrent neoplasm with immunosuppression transplantation is often delayed. Our patient developed early cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure 3 months after completion of chemotherapy. Given the severity of her cardiac symptoms the decision was made to proceed with heart transplantation in the short term after completion of her chemotherapy. We report the success to 1 year of this decision and discuss the implications

Here we report the first case of the development of intracranial solitary plasmacytoma in the inner ear after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) in a 39-year-old Japanese female with primary plasma cell leukemia (PCL). A point to note is that this is not a case on multiple myeloma but on PCL. She was successfully treated with local irradiation and survived more than 6 years from the time of diagnosis and transplantation. This case elucidates the biology of PCL and stresses the need for an individual approach to the clinical management of patients with plasma cell neoplasm undergoi

BACKGROUND: Hepatic neoplasms can be the primary indication for hepatic transplantation. The tumors can also be incidentally identified in explanted livers. We explored the clinicopathologic features of hepatic neoplasms identified in explanted livers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All explanted livers resected between 2001 and 2006 were evaluated for the presence of neoplasms and their clinicopathologic features were examined.
RESULTS: In 98 liver transplants, 15 neoplasms (15.3%) were identified. Patient ages ranged from 5 to 63 years (median, 56 years). The primary etiology of hepatic disease wa

INTRODUCTION: Neoplasms have classically been considered a contraindication for heart transplantation (HT) because of the possibility of recurrence during immunosuppressive therapy. There are few cases of patients who suffered a pretransplant malignancy (PTM); however the appropriate interval free of a malignancy (IFoM) before heart transplantation is unclear. Our study sought to determine the long-term outcomes after transplantation among patients who had suffered a prior neoplasm compared with our overall cohort.
METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included 595 heart transplant

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) care and the life expectancy of affected patients have substantially improved in recent decades, leading to an increased number of patients being diagnosed with comorbidities, including cancers. Our objective was to characterize the epidemiology of cancers between 2006 and 2017 in CF patients with and without a lung transplant.
METHODS: Medical records of CF patients from 2006 to 2016 in the French CF Registry were linked to their corresponding claims data (SNDS). The annual prevalence and incidence rates of cancers were estimated from 2006 to 2017 in CF patie

Chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) is a BCR-ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm with notably dismal survival. The current 2016 World Health Organization classification of myeloid neoplasms enables clinicians to unequivocally differentiate CNL from its comparable myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm overlap syndromes. Additionally, the gradual emergence of next-generation sequencing has progressively expanded our evolving understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of CNL and its therapeutic potential. Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation remains the primary therapeutic option

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders are mostly B-cell neoplasms that develop as a consequence of immunosuppressive therapy. Plasma cell myeloma occurring after solid organ transplant is rare. We report here a case of plasma cell myeloma variant of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders developing after 15 months of live related renal transplant in a 41-year-old female. We compare clinicopathological features of this case with few cases reported in literature.

There is an increasement on the incidence of tumours within the population of renal transplanted, from three to five times over general population. Related to urological tumours, it emphasizes an increase in the incidence of the renal carcinoma, around 4,7% against 3% on general population. In this case, we present a 56-year-old patient, who suffered a renal transplant 8 years ago. Incidentally, it is diagnosed a 3 cm mass at the back face of the transplanted kidney, suggestive of renal neoplasm. Given the characteristics of the mass, of the patient and because of the good graft function, we p
