Clinicopathologic and Molecular Analyses of 2 Basomelanocytic Tumors and Literature Review.

Basomelanocytic tumors are rare cutaneous neoplasms characterized by an intimate admixture of basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Although basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and melanoma are commonly encountered individually, only a limited number of basomelanocytic tumors have been documented. We report the clinical and histologic features and molecular findings of 2 combined basomelanocytic tumors: 80-year-old man and 91-year-old-man, presented with lesions on the left upper lip and left forehead, respectively. The first tumor consisted of a close admixture of BCC, highlighted by p63 and keratin immu

Clinical testing for the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome in a DNA diagnostic laboratory.

PURPOSE: This study determines which clinical features predict positive test results among samples submitted for DNA-based diagnostic nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) testing, and further defines the mutational spectrum of the PTCH gene. METHODS: DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes, and polymerase chain reaction products from exons 1 to 23 of the PTCH gene were directly sequenced. Pedigree phenotypic information was obtained by written questionnaire. RESULTS: Among 106 presumably unrelated pedigrees, 44 independent mutations were found in 47 families. There were 11

Pilomatrix carcinoma of the clitoris.

Pilomatrix carcinoma, a malignant counterpart of pilomatrixoma, is a rare skin neoplasm composed of basaloid and shadow cells that characterize differentiation toward the hair matrix. The authors present a case of pilomatrix carcinoma of the clitoris, a very unusual location not previously reported. Diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses are discussed. Pilomatrix carcinoma should be differentiated from benign pilomatrixoma and other carcinomas with shadow cells, including basal cell carcinoma with matrical differentiation and metastases of visceral carcinomas with shadow cells.

Morphologic diversity of malignant neoplasms arising in preexisting spiradenoma, cylindroma, and spiradenocylindroma based on the study of 24 cases, sporadic or occurring in the setting of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome.

The authors present a series of 24 malignant neoplasms arising in preexisting benign spiradenoma (20), cylindroma (2), and spiradenocylindroma (2). Nineteen patients (12 females, 7 males; age range, 41 to 92 y) had a solitary neoplasm (size range, 2.2 to 17.5 cm; median 4 cm), whereas the remaining 5 (4 females, 1 male; age range, 66 to 72 y) manifested clinical features of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome (BSS), an autosomal dominantly inherited disease characterized by widespread, small, benign neoplasms on which background larger malignant lesions appeared. Microscopically, all cases showed the res

A Collision Tumor: Reflectance Confocal Microscopy Features and Correlation between Dermoscopy and Histopathology.

Coexistence of two types of malignant neoplasms, called 'a collision tumor,' is relatively uncommon. Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are known to coexist with other cutaneous lesions, but the collision of BCC with malignant melanoma is rare. We report a rare case of BCC with underlying lentigo maligna melanoma, focusing on dermoscopic and reflectance confocal microscopic (RCM) findings and their correlation with histopathology. RCM and dermoscopy seem to offer important clues to increase clinical suspicion of collision tumors and improve clinical diagnosis.

The First Case of Basal Cell Carcinoma in the Scar Fifty Years after Leishmanization.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a self-curing skin infection distributed in tropics and sub-tropics. Up to one million cases of CL appeared in endemic areas a year. Leishmanization (artificially controlled infections) was widely used to control cutaneous leishmaniasis in the past. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common epithelial neoplasm of the skin. Cases of BCC developing in a leishmanial scar have been documented. We present the first case of confirmed basal cell carcinoma arising in 2020 in an 81-old physician working in Moscow (Russian Federation) in a leishmanial scar. It was 50

The spectrum of oculocutaneous disease: Part II. Neoplastic and drug-related causes of oculocutaneous disease.

There are a multitude of diseases that commonly affect both the skin and the eye. Part II of this 2-part series reviews the oculocutaneous manifestations of neoplasms, both benign and malignant, and adverse drug reactions affecting the skin and the eye. Though rare, a number of neoplasms that primarily involve the skin, such as melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, can metastasize to the eye, leading to permanent damage if not properly treated. In addition, periocular neoplasms can irritate the conjunctiva and lid, reducing a patient's ability to see clearly. Neoplastic diseases, such as xeroderm

Optimal Time for Nevus Sebaceous Excision and Predictors of Surgical Outcomes and Secondary Intralesional Neoplasms: The Mayo Clinic Experience Over 37 Years.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists around the optimal timing of resection of nevus sebaceous (NS). The authors aim to determine optimal timing of NS resection and identify predictors of surgical outcomes and secondary intralesional neoplasms. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of all patients with biopsy-proven NS diagnosis treated at the authors' institution between 1987 and 2024. RESULTS: A total of 632 patients (317 females) underwent biopsy at a median age of 17 (interquartile range 11.7-36.9) years. Benign secondary intralesional neoplasms were found in 67 (10.6%) patients, with syringocys

HIPK2 expression in progression of cutaneous epithelial neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Homeodomain-interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2) is responsible for a DNA damage response, centrally regulating p53. The aberrant HIPK2 expression is known to be involved in carcinogenesis in several malignancies. However, the correlation of HIPK2 expression along with progression of cutaneous epithelial neoplasm has not been investigated. METHODS: Using immunohistochemistry and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, we examined the correlation between HIPK2 and HIPK2-related protein expressions and the progression of some cutaneous epithelial neoplasms (i.e.,

Dietary garcinol inhibits 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide-induced tongue carcinogenesis in rats.

The effects of dietary feeding with a polyisoprenylated benzophenone, garcinol, isolated from Garcinia indica fruit rind on the development of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO)-induced oral carcinogenesis were investigated in male F344 rats. At 7 weeks of age, animals were given 4-NQO at 20 ppm in the drinking water for 8 weeks to induce tongue neoplasms. They also received the diets containing 100 or 500 ppm garcinol either during (for 10 weeks) or after (for 22 weeks) the carcinogen exposure. The other rats were given tap water without 4-NQO throughout the experiment, and fed garcinol (500 pp

Two new patients with Curry-Jones syndrome with trichoblastoma and medulloblastoma suggest an etiologic role of the sonic hedgehog-patched-GLI pathway.

Curry-Jones syndrome (OMIM #601707) is a rare multiple malformation disorder of unknown etiology, associated with brain and skull abnormalities, polysyndactyly, and defects of the eyes, skin and gastrointestinal tract. We report on two new cases of Curry-Jones syndrome with previously unreported features, including benign and malignant neoplasms. The first patient had typical features of Curry-Jones syndrome as well as multiple intra-abdominal smooth muscle hamartomas and trichoblastoma of the skin. The second patient was born with occipital meningoceles and developed a desmoplastic medullobla

Red Dot Basal Cell Carcinoma: Report of Cases and Review of This Unique Presentation of Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Red dot basal cell carcinoma is a unique variant of basal cell carcinoma. Including the three patients described in this report, red dot basal cell carcinoma has only been described in seven individuals. This paper describes the features of two males and one female with red dot basal cell carcinoma and reviews the characteristics of other patients with this clinical subtype of basal cell carcinoma. A 70-year-old male developed a pearly-colored papule with a red dot in the center on his nasal tip. A 71-year-old male developed a red dot surrounded by a flesh-colored papule on his left nostril. L

Identification and characterization of primary cilia-positive salivary gland tumours exhibiting basaloid/myoepithelial differentiation.

Primary cilia (PC) are non-motile, antenna-like structures on the cell surface. Many types of neoplasms exhibit PC loss, whereas in some neoplasms PC are retained and involved in tumourigenesis. To elucidate the PC status and characteristics of major salivary gland tumours (SGTs), we examined 100 major SGTs encompassing eight histopathological types by immunohistochemical analysis. PC were present in all (100%) of the pleomorphic adenomas (PAs), basal cell adenomas (BCAs), adenoid cystic carcinomas (AdCCs), and basal cell adenocarcinomas (BCAcs) examined, but absent in all (0%) of the Warthin

Nodular basal cell carcinoma of the scrotum: a case report and review of the literature.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common non-melanoma type of skin cancer described in humans that originates in the epidermis, more specifically in the basal layer and its appendages. Environmental, genetic and phenotypic factors contribute to the onset of this cancer; however, damage caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunlight is the primary risk factor. The emergence of this neoplasm in unexposed body areas, such as the soles, groin, armpit, scrotum or vulva is very rare. We present this case of a 71-year-old man with a tumour in the middle raphe of the scrotum histologically confirm

Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Expression Helps Distinguish Pleomorphic Adenoma from Histologic Mimics.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common biphasic type of salivary gland tumour to arise in adults. It is a biphasic tumour composed of both luminal (ductal) cells and abluminal (basal and myoepithelial) cells. Other biphasic salivary gland type tumours, both benign and malignant, can mimic PA, especially on small biopsies. Previous studies have shown that glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is preferentially expressed in PA and can be useful in the distinction from other salivary gland tumours. However, most of these studies were performed on a small subset of tumour types at a time whe

Non-melanomatous skin cancer in the elderly: diagnosis and management.

Non-melanomatous skin cancers, particularly basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, are frequently observed in elderly persons and are primarily the result of the chronic, cumulative effects of exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet light radiation). Characteristics of both types of neoplasm and diagnosis and management of non-melanomatous skin cancer are reviewed. Treatment based on multiple factors, including patient age, overall health status, histologic pattern, and cosmetic considerations, is described.

Multiple intracerebral metastases from an islet cell carcinoma of the pancreas: case report.

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of an 85-year-old woman with bitemporal headaches revealed cystic lesions in the basal ganglia and cerebellum. The patient remained neurologically asymptomatic until just before her death at age 89. Autopsy revealed tumors of the brain, lungs, liver, periaortic lymph nodes, adrenal gland, and the pancreas. Light microscopy demonstrated a malignant small cell tumor with scant cytoplasm. Electron microscopy revealed intracytoplasmic dense core vesicles, characteristic of neuroendocrine tumors, which prompted the diagnosis of islet cell carcinoma
