Sparganosis in the echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus, is characterized by large subcutaneous masses that may be confused with neoplasms. Plerocercoids, believed to be Spirometra erinacei, were found in the ventral or lateral subcutaneous tissues of three echidnas. In each case there was a prominent fibrous mass < or = 12 cm in diameter enclosing plerocercoids, which were surrounded by an intense inflammatory infiltrate dominated by plasma cells and lymphocytes, with focal suppuration. Multiple, small (< or = 2 mm) plerocercoids were present in the lungs and pleural cavity of a fourth echidna tha

Twelve cases of inflammatory leiomyosarcoma are presented. These tumours arose in the deep soft tissues of the trunk and proximal limbs. The age of the patients ranged from 13-53 years (median 36 years); there was an approximately equal sex ratio. Follow-up data was available for nine patients (mean duration 3.3 years); local recurrence occurred in three and lung metastases in one. Lesions were spindle cell neoplasms with fascicular areas which occupied between 5% and 80% of the tumour. Areas with a distinct storiform pattern were also seen in 10 cases. A prominent inflammatory cell component

BACKGROUND: Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a soft-tissue tumour of uncertain differentiation most often arising in the extremities of children and young adults. AFH is a little-known neoplasm and its rarity may result in it being misdiagnosed as either a reactive lesion or a benign or higher-grade tumour. We report 6 cases of AFH in children and we review the clinicopathological and molecular features of this neoplasm published in the literature.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The children (aged 4 to 16 years) presented a single nodule involving the forearm (4/6), the trunk or the buttock,

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare, benign, mesenchymal tumor. It has a slight female predominance, and it can appear in any range of age. It can be in the extremities, neck, and gastrointestinal tract, but it has also been described in other locations. Even though it is a benign lesion, recurrence has been described in some cases in the literature. A free-margin surgical resection is the recommended treatment. We present a 56 -year-old woman who underwent surgery for an intestinal obstruction associated with middle jejunum perforation. Histopathological study described the presence of a

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare neoplasm that usually originates from the visceral pleura, but it can occur in a wide range of tissues. Approximately 12% of pleural cases are malignant tumors and surgical excision usually become curative. The objective of this study is to present 17 new cases of SFTP and analyze the morphological characteristics that help to identify tumors with a malignant behavior.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We did a retrospective review of the patients who had primary pleural tumors from January 1995 to August 2005.
RESULTS: Among a total of

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm that usually arises in the pleura. Although this tumor has been described at other sites, in the female genital tract it is extremely uncommon.
CASE: We present a case of solitary fibrous tumor arising in the fallopian tube. A 32-year-old woman who presented with acute flank pain had a presumptive diagnosis of leiomyoma of the fallopian tube after abdominopelvic ultrasound. The adnexal mass was excised laparoscopically. Histologic examination showed the characteristic features of a solitary fibrous tumor.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), which usually presents in the pleura and is thought to be mesothelial in nature, has been recently discovered in extrapleural sites, including the orbit. Presently ultrastructural studies show absence of epithelial-mesothelial features, and reactivity of the tumor cells to CD34 antigen on immunohistochemical analysis suggests the mesenchymal origin of such tumors.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 40-year-old woman had a 4-year history of progressive swelling of her right upper lid and a slow-growing palpable mass of the orbit. CT and MR imaging showed a well circu

We report a distinctive lesion of the labium majus resected in 14 girls from 3.9 to 13.2 years of age. All presented with enlargement of 1 or occasionally both labia majora. Radiographic imaging and surgical exploration showed expansion of the labium majus without definable borders. Grossly, specimens consisted of fibro-fatty tissue from 2 to 8 cm in greatest dimension. Microscopic examination revealed the usual constituents of vulvar soft tissue, with expansion of the fibrous component. Sparsely to moderately cellular interconnected bands encircled lobules of fat, blood vessels, and nerves. T

We present the case of a 23-year-old woman with a long-standing history of recurrent left-sided pleural effusion unrelated to her menstrual cycle. At her last presentation, non-contrast-enhanced chest CT showed a pleural effusion and a lower left hemithorax mass, both large enough to cause complete collapse of the lower lobe and partial collapse of the upper lobe. Thoracoscopic surgery revealed a multilobulated mass originating from the dome of the diaphragm with pleural deposits. Histopathology diagnosed this as a calcifying fibrous tumour of the pleura, a rare benign tumour with excellent pr

Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH-PG) is a type of pyogenic granuloma characterized by proliferating blood vessels that resemble conventional granulation tissue. Granulation tissue is very often seen in association with ingrown toenails. Despite the close relationship between both entities, LCH-PG shows clinically different behaviors, such as rapid growth and frequent recurrence. Currently, it is unknown exactly how the different etiological factors contribute to the formation of differences between entities. We present a case of a large LCH-PG associated with chronic onychocryptosis in a 26-y

Sarcomas comprise a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms. They can be grouped into 2 general categories, soft tissue sarcoma and primary bone sarcoma, which have different staging and treatment approaches. This review includes a discussion of both soft tissue sarcomas (malignant fibrous histiocytoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, angiosarcoma, Kaposi sarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, aggressive fibromatosis or desmoid tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, and primary alveolar soft-part sarcoma) and primary bone sarcomas (osteosarcoma, Ewing s

Recent data from literature show an increase in incidence and mortality due to soft tissue sarcoma (STS). In the Netherlands age-standardised mortality rates of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) over the period 1950-1988 show a more than fivefold increase. Males predominate over females by a factor of 1.17. Age-adjusted hospital admission rates in 1980-1988 show an increase by a factor of 1.36. The mean estimated incidence is 4.74 per 100,000 person years over a three-year period (1988-1990). The most prevalent histological types in that period were leiomyosarcoma (20.1%), malignant fibrous histiocyto

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm, rarely localized to the head and neck region. Due to its diverse morphological and histological characteristics, SFT may be misdiagnosed as other soft tissue sarcomas. This case report describes an atypical presentation of SFT involving the upper lip in a 75-year-old man. The only non-specific clinical symptom was localized swelling. An intraoral examination revealed a well-defined, exophytic soft lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a heterogeneous, lobulated lesion with well-defined margins and marked contrast enh

Twenty-nine tumors (from 26 patients, including two with recurrent disease) diagnosed as solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura (n = 23), mediastinum (n = 4), abdominal cavity (n = 1), and parotid gland (n = 1) were studied immunohistochemically. Three histologically malignant tumors showed areas of high cellularity and mitotic activity (more than 4 mitoses/10 high-power fields) with features resembling malignant fibrous histiocytoma, malignant hemangiopericytoma, or fibrosarcoma, together with areas typical of benign solitary fibrous tumor. Formaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues an

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms that comprise <2 % of all soft tissue tumors. They are a diagnostically challenging group of neoplasms that can occur essentially anywhere. Molecular or genetic testing of soft tissue tumors will increasingly add to the foundation of distinctive histologic features, as accurate diagnosis is critical for appropriate treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for a left breast mass. Ultrasonography showed an oval hypoechoic mass with partially obscured boundaries. Surgical specime

Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) is a peculiar splenic vascular lesion that is characterized by marked stromal sclerosis and the presence of plasma cells, which shares histopathological features associated with IgG4-related sclerosing disease. The cinicopathological features of 10 cases of SANT were reviewed and immunohistochemistry with IgG4 and IgG antibodies was performed. Nine other various splenic lesions served as controls. Five cases of SANT were found incidentally. Three cases of SANT had multiple tumors and five had associated abdominal disseminated calcifying fibr

Cystadenofibromas (CAF) and adenofibromas (AF) are rare benign gynecologic neoplasms of epithelial origin. They can be composed predominantly of solid fibrous tissue, adenofibromas, or contain cystic components, as seen in cystadenofibromas; which can be further classified by their epithelial cell type (serous, mucinous, etc.). They most commonly arise from the ovary; however, CAF/AF associated with the fallopian tube have also been reported. CAF/AF is typically asymptomatic and found incidentally. Like other adnexal and ovarian masses, patients are at increased risk of ovarian/adnexal torsion
