A review presents an incidence of multiple (second) primary tumors of head and neck region resulted from an exposure to tobacco smoke and ethanol. Further, epidemiology, clinical implications, molecular alterations and an impact of genetic factor are described. Finally, alternative theories of origin of multiple primary tumors are discussed.

CONTEXT: Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia in unselected patients. The ectopic gland locations should be known for appropriate surgical exploration and for avoiding subsequent re-exploration that would represent higher morbidity. A case is presented of multiple fibroadenomas of the breasts in a young Caucasian woman followed over a period of 10 years. A total of 22 individual lesions have been identified. Review of the literature gives little guidance regarding incidence, natural history and management of this condition. It is proposed that a register be set up to obtain basic data on this rare condition. The authors would be willing to collate cases submitted to such a register.

Malignant tumors of the gastro-intestinal tract showing both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components are rare. Very few cases were described in the stomach and only one case in the colon. We describe a second case of a tumor of the sigmoid colon showing adenocarcinoma intermingled with leiomyosarcoma elements.

A 5-year-old girl with Aicardi syndrome, choroid plexus papilloma and multiple gastric hyperplastic polyps is reported. Gastric polyposis is unusual in the pediatric age group and has not previously been reported in a patient with Aicardi syndrome. A variety of uncommon benign and malignant tumors have been associated with Aicardi syndrome; this literature is briefly reviewed. The increased frequency of tumors in Aicardi syndrome should be kept in mind when evaluating these patients.

Unilateral absence of a pulmonary artery is a rare congenital anomaly that is often accompanied by other cardiovascular anomalies. Surgical treatment for this rare disease is usually performed only on the abnormal side. Thymic carcinoids are a rare entity that may be associated with endocrine diseases like Cushing's syndrome or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type I (MEN1). These tumors represent 4% of anterior mediastinal tumors and are characterized by their very aggressive behavior. We present the case of a patient with a previous MEN 1 diagnosis in whom, during the follow up of his disease, a thoracic image compatible with thymic carcinoid was detected. A Lhermitte-Duclos type cerebellum hamartoma is reported in a woman with a diffuse hamartomatous condition involving the breast, thyroid, colon, skin, and kidney. The family history demonstrated the autosomal dominant transmission of this hamartomatous syndrome, and indicated the diagnosis of Cowden disease. This observation supports the recent hypothesis of Lhermitte-Duclos disease associated with Cowden disease as being a single phakomatosis.
