Plasma cells known as "Mott cells" present non-secretable accumulations of immunoglobulins called "Russell bodies". Its presence is related to hematological neoplasms, but it can appear in chronic inflammatory processes. The most common occurrence within the digestive tract is the gastric antrum associated with H. pylori infection. Our patient is added the rare extragastric cases where the association with H. pylori is inconsistent. We have found a frequent appearance of lower digestive and urological neoplasms in relation to these cases, justified by the expression of circulating cytokines in

The hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway is a highly regulated signaling pathway that is important not only for embryonic development, tissue patterning, and organogenesis but also for tissue repair and the maintenance of stem cells in adult tissues. In the adult hematopoietic system, HH signaling regulates intrathymic T-cell development, and it is one of the survival signals provided by follicular dendritic cells to prevent apoptosis in germinal center B cells. HH signaling is required for primitive hematopoiesis; however, conflicting data have been reported regarding the role of the HH pathway in

Sox11 is a transcription factor involved in embryonic neurogenesis and tissue remodeling. Its role in lymphopoiesis is presently unknown. Recent studies have shown the nuclear expression of sox11 in mantle cell lymphoma, which raises the question about its possible association with t(11;14)(q13;q32), the genetic hallmark of mantle cell lymphoma leading to the overexpression of cyclin D1. In this study, we examined sox11 expression in 211 cases of B-cell neoplasms by immunohistochemistry, and evaluated its association with t(11;14) and overexpression of cyclin D1. Nuclear staining of sox11 was

INTRODUCTION: Plasmacytoma, a localized tumor of monoclonal plasma cells without any clinical, radiological or physical evidence of plasma cell neoplasm (PCN), is a rare entity that accounts for 1% of PCN. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) extramedullary plasmacytoma of mediastinal region has never been reported and is a diagnostic challenge considering other differential diagnoses.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 51-year-old African-American female with progressively increasing cough, dyspnea, and dysphagia for 6 months with a computed tomography (CT) scan revealing a subcarinal mass. The h

Plasmablastic lymphoma is an aggressive neoplasm that shares many cytomorphologic and immunophenotypic features with plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma. However, plasmablastic lymphoma is listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification as a variant of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. To characterize the relationship between plasmablastic lymphoma and plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma, we performed immunohistochemistry using a large panel of B-cell and plasma cell markers on nine cases of plasmablastic lymphoma and seven cases of plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma with and without HIV/

BACKGROUND: Lymphoid neoplasms in serous effusions are uncommon, and the details of lymphoid neoplasms in serous effusions from China are still unclear.
METHODS: Between January 2004 and December 2019, all patients with lymphoid neoplasms in pleural effusions, ascites, and pericardial effusions in our hospital, were reviewed.
RESULTS: A total of 65 patients with lymphoid neoplasms were collected during this period. The top three neoplasms were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (n = 20, 30.7%), myeloma (n = 13, 20.0%), and T-lymphoblastic lymphoma (n = 7, 10.8%). In pleural effusions invo

This report describes the occurrence of plasma cell neoplasia in three young HIV-positive males. Two patients presented with massive ascites. On cytologic examination of the fluid, many immature plasma cells were noted. Genotyping of fluid demonstrated clonal rearrangement of immunoglobulin heavy and kappa light chain genes in both cases. Postmortem examination on one of these revealed neoplastic plasmacellular infiltrate in various organs, including the bone marrow. The third case presented with a hemorrhagic, rapidly enlarging gingival mass with a histologic appearance of an undifferentiated

CONTEXT.—: Unicentric Castleman disease (UCD) is a dynamic entity with a wide spectrum of morphologic findings. UCD can be further subdivided into hyaline-vascular and mixed/plasmacytic variants. Hyaline-vascular UCD has both follicular and interfollicular (stromal) changes, and occasionally these lesions show a skewed representation of either the follicular or stromal compartments. Plasmacytosis is usually minimal in the hyaline-vascular variant. The mixed/plasmacytic variant of UCD is composed of sheets of plasma cells often associated with a variable number of follicles with regressive chan

Flow cytometric immunophenotyping remains an indispensable tool for the diagnosis, classification, staging, and monitoring of hematologic neoplasms. The last 10 years have seen advances in flow cytometry instrumentation and availability of an expanded range of antibodies and fluorochromes that have improved our ability to identify different normal cell populations and recognize phenotypic aberrancies, even when present in a small proportion of the cells analyzed. Phenotypically abnormal populations have been documented in many hematologic neoplasms, including lymphoma, chronic lymphoid leukemi

BACKGROUND: Palisaded and interstitial granulomatous dermatoses (PIGDs) are a spectrum of presumed reactive cutaneous disorders sometimes associated with underlying diseases, notably malignant haemopathies. Specific associations between some of these dermatoses and particular haematological neoplasms may exist.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the spectrum of haematological neoplasms associated with PIGDs and to establish whether specific associations exist.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective monocentric study of all cases of patients with PIGD associated with haematological neoplasms seen in our

The myeloproliferative neoplasms, polycythemia vera, essential thrombocytosis and primary myelofibrosis share driver mutations that either activate the thrombopoietin receptor, MPL, or indirectly activate it through mutations in the gene for JAK2, its cognate tyrosine kinase. Paradoxically, although the myeloproliferative neoplasms are classified as neoplasms because they are clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders, the mutations affecting MPL or JAK2 are gain-of-function, resulting in increased production of normal erythrocytes, myeloid cells and platelets. Constitutive JAK2 activation provi

Type I cryoglobulinemia is typically associated with hematological malignancies such as B-cell lymphomas and plasma cell neoplasms. Its treatment basically targets underlying hematological malignancies, and the prognosis remains unsatisfactory. Despite several reports of type I cryoglobulinemia treated with bortezomib-based regimens, little is available on the treatment of bortezomib-resistant cases. We report a case of severe type I cryoglobulinemia associated with plasma cell neoplasm, refractory to bortezomib and daratumumab, which was successfully managed with a combination of carfilzomib,

Extramedullary plasmacytomata (EMP) are rare malignant neoplasms composed of plasma cells, 90 percent of which occur in the neck and head area, but generally representing only 1 percent of tumors of that location. The paper report a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the larynx, in a 62-year-old man. We also review the different malignant plasma cell dyscrasias, paying special attention to the EMP, given its predilection for the upper aerodigestive tract.

The discovery of genomic abnormalities present in monoclonal plasma cells has diagnostic, prognostic, and disease-monitoring implications in plasma cell neoplasms (PCNs). However, technical and disease-related limitations hamper the detection of these abnormalities using cytogenetic analysis or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In this study, 28 bone marrow specimens with known PCNs were examined for the presence of genomic abnormalities using microarray analysis after plasma cell enrichment. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on 15 of 28 samples, revealing disease-related genomic abe

Jugular foramen tumours are uncommon, deeply located, and eloquently situated, making their diagnosis and management challenging. Paragangliomas and other benign tumours comprise the large majority of lesions in this region, but malignant tumours are occasionally identified. We report a unique case of a solitary plasmacytoma of the jugular foramen resembling a jugulotympanic paraganglioma. A solitary plasmacytoma of the jugular foramen is both rare in location and in disease presentation, as most plasma cell neoplasms are diagnosed as multiple myeloma. Our 75-year-old patient presented with sy

Papular mucinosis is a condition reported to be associated with abnormal serum paraproteins and plasma cell dyscrasias. We report a patient with papular mucinosis, without a serum paraprotein or bone marrow plasmacytosis, in whom the affected skin contained a prominent perivascular plasma cell infiltrate. Using in situ hybridization, for kappa and lambda light chain mRNA, these plasma cells were demonstrably monotypic for lambda light chain and, therefore, presumably monoclonal and putatively neoplastic. We suggest that the absence of a serum paraprotein and marrow plasmacytosis does not exclu

TNF-Receptor Associated Factor (TRAF)-3 is a master regulator of B cell homeostasis and function. TRAF3 has been shown to bind and regulate various proteins involved in the control of innate and adaptive immune responses. Previous studies showed that TRAF3 overexpression renders B cells hyper-reactive to antigens and Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists, while TRAF3 deficiency has been implicated in the development of a variety of B cell neoplasms. In this report, we show that transgenic mice overexpressing TRAF3 and BCL2 in B cells develop with high incidence severe lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly

Waldenström macroglobulinemia and multiple myeloma are mature B-cell neoplasms deriving from post-germinal cells at different stages of differentiation. The simultaneous presentation of Waldenström macroglobulinemia and multiple myeloma in the same patient is a very rare phenomenon and, so far, only two cases have been described. We report the case of a 75-year Caucasian female patient, with a silent clinical history, who presented with anemia and two different monoclonal proteins (IgMκ and IgGκ). The trephine biopsy showed the presence of a dual population, represented by small lymphoplasmacy
