PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) is the preferred treatment in patients with low-risk upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Improving both instruments and topical chemotherapy regimens efficacy is crucial to achieve better outcomes. The purpose of this review is to summarize the most recent evidence on technological advances for the conservative management of UTUC with implications on diagnosis and treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility, efficacy and safety of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for complex renal cystic lesions.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on the clinical data of 27 patients with complex renal cystic lesions treated by laparoscopic partial nephrectomy from May 2008 to April 2011 in Peking University Third Hospital. According to the Bosniak classification, 7 cases were lesions of grade IIF, 11 of grade III, and 9 of grade IV. INTRODUCTION: Angiomyolipomas are the most common renal lesions in tuberous sclerosis complex. When symptomatic, the treatment includes nephron sparing surgery. This is especially challenging when the lesions are bilateral, large and multiple. CASE-HISTORY: A 22-year-old lady with bilateral multiple large symptomatic renal angiomyolipomas associated with other manifestations of tuberous sclerosis was managed with partial nephrectomies on either side. At 30 months of follow-up, the patient has normal renal functions and no evidence of recurrence.

Multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma (MCRCC) is an uncommon type of cystic renal neoplasm with characteristic histologic findings and a good prognosis. Three cases are reported. One case involves enucleation of an MCRCC in a kidney donor with a 10-year follow-up and no recurrence in the transplant recipient. Nephron sparing surgery should be considered when the diagnosis of MCRCC is suspected preoperatively and confirmed intraoperatively.
