Ionizing Radiation Perturbs Cell Cycle Progression of Neural Precursors in the Subventricular Zone Without Affecting Their Long-Term Self-Renewal.

Damage to normal human brain cells from exposure to ionizing radiation may occur during the course of radiotherapy or from accidental exposure. Delayed effects may complicate the immediate effects resulting in neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. We examined cellular and molecular changes associated with exposure of neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPs) to (137)Cs γ-ray doses in the range of 0 to 8 Gy. Subventricular zone NSPs isolated from newborn mouse pups were analyzed for proliferation, self-renewal, and differentiation, shortly after irradiation. Strikingly, there was no apparent incre

Neural Plastic Changes in the Subcortical Auditory Neural Pathway after Single-Sided Deafness in Adult Mice: A MEMRI Study.

Single-sided deafness (SSD) induces cortical neural plastic changes according to duration of deafness. However, it is still unclear how the auditory cortical changes accompany the subcortical neural changes. The present study aimed to find the neural plastic changes in the cortical and subcortical auditory system following adult-onset single-sided deafness (SSD) using Mn-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI). B57BL/6 mice (postnatal 8-week-old) were divided into three groups: the SSD-4-week group (postnatal 12-week-old, n = 11), the SSD-8-week group (postnatal 16-week-old, n = 11), and a

Analyzing EEG data during opium addiction treatment using a fuzzy logic-based machine learning model.

BACKGROUND: Reliable noninvasive tools for assessing substance abuse treatment and predicting outcomes remain a challenge. We believe EEG-derived complexity measures may have a direct link to clinical diagnosis. To this aim, our study involved a psychological investigation of four groups of current and former male opium addicts. Furthermore, we propose a machine learning (ML) model incorporating fuzzy logic to analyze EEG data and identify neural complexity changes associated with opium addiction. METHOD: Male participants were categorized into four groups: active addicts, those with less tha

Hierarchical organization of cortical morphology of decision-making when deconstructing Iowa Gambling Task performance in healthy adults.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a measure of decision-making, in which alternative metrics have greater construct validity than conventional metrics. No large scale study has examined the neural correlates in healthy adults. We administered the IGT and structural MRI to 124 healthy participants. We analyzed the conventional IGT metric of advantageous minus disadvantageous choices (i.e., decks C + D minus decks A + B), and three alternative metrics based on choices from decks D and A alone, and all selections from each deck. Using regression and voxel-based morphometry, we examined regional gra

Gene bivalency at Polycomb domains regulates cranial neural crest positional identity.

The cranial neural crest cells are multipotent cells that provide head skeletogenic mesenchyme and are crucial for craniofacial patterning. We analyzed the chromatin landscapes of mouse cranial neural crest subpopulations in vivo. Early postmigratory subpopulations contributing to distinct mouse craniofacial structures displayed similar chromatin accessibility patterns yet differed transcriptionally. Accessible promoters and enhancers of differentially silenced genes carried H3K27me3/H3K4me2 bivalent chromatin marks embedded in large enhancer of zeste homolog 2-dependent Polycomb domains, indi

Artificial neural network model for identifying taxi gross emitter from remote sensing data of vehicle emission.

Vehicle emission has been the major source of air pollution in urban areas in the past two decades. This article proposes an artificial neural network model for identifying the taxi gross emitters based on the remote sensing data. After carrying out the field test in Guangzhou and analyzing various factors from the emission data, the artificial neural network modeling was proved to be an advisable method of identifying the gross emitters. On the basis of the principal component analysis and the selection of algorithm and architecture, the Back-Propagation neural network model with 8-17-1 archi

Analysis of inter-leg coordination mechanisms in cricket locomotion: insights from thoracic Ganglion network transection.

Adaptive insect locomotion depends on interactions between the nervous system and body dynamics, yet how these components contribute to inter-leg coordination remains unclear. We investigated the role of direct neural coupling by unilaterally transecting the posterior intermediate connective linking the mesothoracic and metathoracic ganglia in the cricketGryllus bimaculatus. We analyzed kinematic changes and compared them with predictions from a purely neural phase oscillator network model featuring hierarchical asymmetric coupling. The experiments showed a clear dissociation: transection disr

Differences in neural crest sensitivity to ethanol account for the infrequency of anterior segment defects in the eye compared with craniofacial anomalies in a zebrafish model of fetal alcohol syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Ethanol (ETOH) exposure during pregnancy is associated with craniofacial and neurologic abnormalities, but infrequently disrupts the anterior segment of the eye. In these studies, we used zebrafish to investigate differences in the teratogenic effect of ETOH on craniofacial, periocular, and ocular neural crest. METHODS: Zebrafish eye and neural crest development was analyzed by means of live imaging, TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling) assay, immunostaining, detection of reactive oxygen species, and in situ hybridization. RESULTS: Our studies demo

Transforming growth factor beta-SMAD2 signaling regulates aortic arch innervation and development.

Aortic arch interruptions in humans and animal models are mainly caused by aberrant development of the fourth pharyngeal arch artery. Little is known about the maturation of this vessel during normal and abnormal development, which is the subject of this study. Tgfbeta2 knockout mice that present with fourth artery defects have been associated with defective neural crest cell migration. In this study, we concentrated on pharyngeal arch artery development during developmental days 12.5 to 18.5, focusing on neural crest cell migration using a Wnt1-Cre by R26R neural crest cell reporter mouse. Flexible reorientation of conserved neural dynamics underlies grasp control.

Grasping objects is a complex behavior requiring high-dimensional hand control and dynamic interaction with the environment, yet its neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Dynamical systems approaches have provided key insights into how neural populations generate control signals for arm movements such as reaching and cycling but have proven insufficient to account for neural population activity during grasping. Here, we re-analyzed multi-area neural recordings from rhesus monkeys performing a reach-to-grasp task to many objects and found two key population-level features. First, the comp

A glutamatergic brain neural circuit is critical for modulating trigeminal neuropathic pain.

Trigeminal neuropathic pain is a predominant symptom in patients with trigeminal neuralgia. However, the underlying neural circuit mechanism is still elusive. In this study, we investigated the role of a brain neural circuit in the modulation of trigeminal neuropathic pain. We used "Targeted Recombination in Active Populations" to identify activated neurons in brain structures. Anterograde and retrograde viral tracing combined with immunofluorescence staining was used to validate the activated neurons-involved neuronal pathway. We performed optogenetic stimulation and behavioral observation to

De Novo Brain-Computer Interfacing Deforms Manifold of Populational Neural Activity Patterns in Human Cerebral Cortex.

Human brains are capable of modulating innate activities to adapt to novel environments and tasks; for sensorimotor neural system this means acquisition of a rich repertoire of activity patterns that improve behavioral performance. To directly map the process of acquiring the neural repertoire during tasks onto performance improvement, we analyzed net neural populational activity during the learning of its voluntary modulation by brain-computer interface (BCI) operation in female and male humans. The recorded whole-head high-density scalp electroencephalograms (EEGs) were subjected to dimensio
