Sural Sparing Pattern and Sensory Ratio as Electrodiagnostic and Prognostic Markers in Pediatric Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the presence of sural sparing pattern (SSP) and sensory ratio in pediatric Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), their distribution to subtypes, and their relationship with demographic and clinical features with a focus on the disability and muscle strength. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study was conducted on pediatric GBS patients of both sexes with 2 years follow-up and two nerve conduction studies in which SSP and sensory ratio were calculated. Three subgroups of SSP were formed by separate calculation of median (SSP-m) and ulnar (SSP-u) and both medi

Axonal conduction velocity and input conductance in petrosal ganglion primary sensory neurones of the cat.

Petrosal ganglion chemoreceptor neurones were impaled with glass microelectrodes in an 'in vitro' preparation maintained at 36.5 degrees C. For each cell, the input conductance and the axonal conduction velocity were calculated from the voltage change produced by a hyperpolarizing pulse, and from the latency of the spike evoked by carotid nerve stimulation. In 34 neurones, the average values for these variables were 3.7 X 10(-8) Siemens and 10 m/s. The two parameters were related by a power function with an exponent of 0.9, which is lower than the value of 2 expected on the basis of simple lin

Analysis of conduction velocity in the H pathway. Part 1. Methodology and results in normal subjects.

An electrophysiological method is described for evaluating the conduction velocity in the different partial segments of the monosynaptic reflex pathway of the lower limbs in man. Using the latencies of M and H responses recorded from the soleus muscle elicited by stimulating the posterior tibial nerve at the popliteal fossa (pf) and the sciatic nerve at the upper thigh, the conduction velocities in the entire course (pf-to-spinal cord), in the proximal segment (upper thigh-to-spinal cord), and in the distal segment (pf-to-upper thigh) of the H circuit, were evaluated and expressed by mixed (se

Brainstem auditory evoked responses in rats with experimental chronic renal failure.

1. Chronic renal failure was induced in rats by five-sixths nephrectomy. Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was recorded after 3 months. 2. In the uraemic rats latency of the first wave was delayed, while the interpeak I-V latency was similar to that of the controls. 3. These results suggest a delayed neural conduction along the acoustic nerve or cochlear changes in uraemic rats.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation Reduces Ventricular Arrhythmias and Mitigates Adverse Neural Cardiac Remodeling Post-Myocardial Infarction.

This study sought to evaluate the impact of chronic vagal nerve stimulation (cVNS) on cardiac and extracardiac neural structure/function after myocardial infarction (MI). Groups were control, MI, and MI + cVNS; cVNS was started 2 days post-MI. Terminal experiments were performed 6 weeks post-MI. MI impaired left ventricular mechanical function, evoked anisotropic electrical conduction, increased susceptibility to ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, and altered neuronal and glial phenotypes in the stellate and dorsal root ganglia, including glial activation. cVNS improved cardiac mechanic

Axons from anteroventral cochlear nucleus that terminate in medial superior olive of cat: observations related to delay lines.

The differences in path length of axons from the anteroventral cochlear nuclei (AVCN) to the medial superior olive (MSO) are thought to provide the anatomical substrate for the computation of interaural time differences (ITD). We made small injections of biotinylated dextran into the AVCN that produced intracellular-like filling of axons. This permitted three-dimensional reconstructions of individual axons and measurements of axonal length to individual terminals in MSO. Some axons that innervated the contralateral MSO had collaterals with lengths that were graded in the rostrocaudal direction

[Neurocyte reaction of the kinesthetic analyzer of rats to the action of vibration].

By neurohistological, morphometric and electron-microscopic methods the effect of vibration of 80 Hz applied at an acceleration of 8 m/sec2 on the nerve cell and conduction components of the kinesthetic analyzer was investigated. After a single exposure to vibration nerve cells of the sensorimotor cortex showed some changes. Exposure to vibration for as long as a week caused reactive changes in every structure of the kinesthetic analyzer investigated. After 1-month exposure the changes were more disseminated and became destructive, after 2-month exposure the process developed at a slower rate,

A computational roadmap to activity-dependent myelination.

There is growing evidence to support myelin plasticity as a complementary mechanism to synaptic plasticity in the brain. Activity-dependent myelination (ADM) enables oligodendrocytes to modify myelin structure in response to neural activity, modulating axonal conduction velocity and delays to maintain precise signal timing. This introduces a timing-based plasticity mechanism that operates in parallel to changes in signal strength. Despite its significance, ADM lacks a strong theoretical framework due to the interaction of multiple mechanisms operating on widely different time scales. Computati

Activated non-neural specific T cells open the blood-brain barrier to circulating antibodies.

Previous studies have shown that activated T cells can successfully cross endothelial barriers and will accumulate in tissue which contains their specific antigen. Myelin specific T cells (e.g. myelin basic protein specific) are recognized to play an important role in the induction of experimental autoimmune demyelinating disease of the CNS and have been shown to induce blood-brain barrier breakdown effectively. In this study we injected T cells reactive to a non-neural antigen (ovalbumin) systemically into Lewis rats and caused them to accumulate in the thoracic dorsal column by a prior injec

The neural crest in cardiac congenital anomalies.

This review discusses the function of neural crest as they relate to cardiovascular defects. The cardiac neural crest cells are a subpopulation of cranial neural crest discovered nearly 30 years ago by ablation of premigratory neural crest. The cardiac neural crest cells are necessary for normal cardiovascular development. We begin with a description of the crest cells in normal development, including their function in remodeling the pharyngeal arch arteries, outflow tract septation, valvulogenesis, and development of the cardiac conduction system. The cells are also responsible for modulating

A Case Series of Unilateral Peripheral Neuropathy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peripheral neuropathy may present with a variety of phenotypes depending on the pattern of weakness and sensory loss, the neurophysiological characteristics (axonal or demyelinating) and additional features such as involvement of the autonomic nervous system or the cranial nerves. The most common phenotype is a symmetrical length-dependent sensory and motor neuropathy. Other phenotypes include non-length-dependent forms such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) or a sensory neuronopathy or ganglionopathy. Asymmetric forms of neuropathy are mo

The supraclavicular nerve.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The aim of this study was to describe a new method for studying the supraclavicular nerve (SCN) conduction and to report four cases with SCN lesions. METHODS: The SCN was antidromically recorded with a pair of self-adhesive electrodes located in the middle of the clavicle. Stimulation (<5 mA) was delivered 7 cm proximally with a bar electrode. To facilitate recording, it was explained to the participant that they would feel a very faint electrical sensation locally and an electrical tingle upward (ear) or downward (shoulder/clavicle). Each participant was asked to say when

Useless hand syndrome: Diagnostic role of electromyography and nerve conduction studies.

BACKGROUND: Useless hand syndrome (UHS) refers to clumsiness of complex finger movements and loss of manual dexterity due to cervical cord lesions, often associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). This condition may represent the first demyelinating event in MS or may occur in a patient with pre-existing MS. METHODS: We report 3 patients with UHS, 2 of whom had not been previously diagnosed with MS. The history and physical examinations, EMG/NCV studies of the arms, and radiological findings are presented. RESULTS: Presenting symptoms in all 3 cases included paresthesia and difficulty with man

Diagnostic values of conventional conduction parameters in ulnar neuropathy at elbow.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Conventional parameters used in electrodiagnosis of ulnar neuropathy at elbow (UNE) are: (i) absolute across-elbow ulnar nerve motor conduction velocity (MCV), (ii) reduction rate of composed muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude from above to below elbow stimulation, and (iii) MCV difference between forearm and across-elbow segment. We aimed to search the diagnostic accuracy values of these parameters on UNE, and their correlations with axonal dysfunction of ulnar nerve fibers. METHODS: Arms with clinical signs of UNE and two-fold healthy controls were included. We
