Neurofibroma is a peripheral nerve sheath tumor which is seen in neurofibromatosis type 1 and is characterized by various ophthalmic manifestations. Solitary neurofibroma of the eyelid is rare. We report a case of a 53-year-old female patient who presented with a painless swelling in the left upper lid of 4 years' duration. She had undergone surgery for the same lesion twice. The lesion was excised and histopathological examination revealed a solitary neurofibroma. She did not have any other features of generalized neurofibromatosis.

Neural tumors located centrally in jaw bones are relatively rare compared with soft tissue neurofibromas. Less than 50 cases have been reported in the literature with a predilection for mandible. This article aims to elucidate a unique case of intraosseous neurofibroma of mandible in a 62-year-old edentulous female patient associated with facial asymmetry due to the swelling extending from the right body of mandible to left body of mandible. The uniqueness of this case is related to the age and extensiveness of this lesion. A review of clinical, radiographic, histological, and immunohistochemi…

Isolated orbital neurofibroma unassociated with systemic neurofibromatosis is relatively rare and may be difficult to clinically differentiate from other orbital tumors. The authors report a case of isolated orbital neurofibroma without neurofibromatosis type 1.

Benign tumors of the nerve sheath are of 2 types: schwannoma and neurofibroma. Neurofibromas are most commonly found with neurofibromatosis type 1 and characterized by incorporation of the nerve fibers within their matrix. Both benign and malignant tumors can affect the facial nerve. These tumors can be intrinsic or extrinsic; in other words, it can originate from the facial nerve itself or from a contiguous structure or a metastatic disease. Actually, extrinsic tumors are far more common than intrinsic tumors. Intraparotid location of benign tumors of the facial nerve sheath is considered a r…

We present a case of a massive hemifacial plexiform neurofibroma. The tumor arose from the right trigeminal ganglion in the middle cranial fossa, involving the 3 divisions of the trigeminal nerve. This affected the whole right side of the face. The principles of management are discussed.

Neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour. It is one of the most frequent tumours of neural origin and its presence is one of the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF-I). Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominantly inherited disease due to an alteration in the long arm of chromosome 17. About 50% of NF-I patients have no family history of the disease. NF-I patients have skin lesions (cafe au lait spots and neurofibromas) as well as bone malformations and central nervous system tumours. Diagnosis is based on a series of clinical criteria. Gin…

BACKGROUND: Plexiform neurofibromas are rarely found in the cauda equina. The most recent report of a plexiform neurofibroma of the cauda equina noted only 2 previously described cases.
CASE DESCRIPTION: To these we add the current case, as well as 2 additional previously published cases. We report the case of a 44-year-old man with a sudden exacerbation of his long-standing lower-back and bilateral leg pain. An intradural lesion was seen on magnetic resonance imaging and he underwent surgery. Intraoperatively, there were swollen nerve roots and tumor insinuating itself between the roots. A b…

Plexiform neurofibroma of the cauda equina has been reported only twice previously. The authors report the first pediatric patient in whom such a tumor has been found. A 4-year-old boy presented with low-back pain that radiated bilaterally into the L-4 and L-5 dermatomes. A dermal sinus noted at the midthoracic level was surrounded by a hemangiomatous lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the presence of the dermal sinus and revealed a well-defined lumbosacral mass that showed heterogeneous intensity with irregular enhancement. Intraoperatively, a solid mass, which engulfed the entire c…

This is a case history of a 38-year-old woman with a dumbbell-shaped C2 neurofibroma associated with right-sided classic migraine headaches (migraine with aura) and cervical trigeminal signs on the affected side. Surgical removal of the tumor was followed by resolution of the migraine headaches and persistence of the signs of cervico-trigeminal involvement.

A case of solitary appendicular neurofibromatosis is presented. The neurogenous nature of the lesion was emphasized by the positive reaction for S-100 protein. Attention is directed towards the morphological differences between neurogenous hyperplasia, which is a reactive common place feature in the elderly, and the present example of neoplastic nerve growth, which produced a gigantic appendix. A review of the literature failed to disclose any previous case unassociated with von Recklinghausen's disease.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromas in neurofibromatosis type 1 induce aesthetic and functional morbidity. Perioperative bleeding has been reported as an obstacle to neurofibroma resections. The authors studied the requirement for blood transfusion during surgical treatment of neurofibromatosis type 1.
METHODS: Six hundred twenty-two procedures performed on 390 neurofibromatosis type 1 patients at the national referral center from 1995 to 2011 were analyzed in two chronologic sets of patients: set 1 (February of 1995 to September of 2007), in which only one surgeon operated; and set 2 (October of 2007 …

Plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) are rare benign tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath, typically pathognomonic of neurofibromatosis type 1, and rarely isolated. We report the case of a 48-year-old man with a medical history of polycystic renal disease with chronic renal insufficiency with dialysis who presented with a painful, slowly enlarging mass in the lower right leg. The initial clinical examination and ultrasonography misdiagnosed the mass as a lipoma. In the operating room, the lesion was found to develop under the deep fascia with malignant features. Postoperative MRI demonstrated an ir…

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis is considered a rare genetic disorder primarily affecting neural tissues. The most common type is neurofibromatosis type 1, which is characterized by plexiform neurofibromas.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 30-year-old Rag-lay ethnic woman with facial plexiform neurofibroma, which not only infiltrated the left eye socket but also caused destruction of temporal bone and facial deformity. The disease started in her childhood, and she had numerous neurofibromas on her trunk and limb at the time of the hospital admission. The patient was diagnosed with neuro…

Neurofibromas are considered benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors containing Schwann cells, fibroblasts, and perineurial cells. They are commonly associated with familial disorders. Isolated colonic neurofibromas are very rare. In this report, we discuss a case of a patient who presented to the gastroenterology clinic with a week-long occurrence of abdominal pain and bleeding. She underwent a colonoscopy in which three sentinel polyps of benign appearance, ranging in size from 4 mm to 10 mm, were removed during the procedure. The pathology report indicated that the distal rectal polyp contain…

Solitary eyelid neurofibroma is a rare condition, and there have been no reported cases of solitary eyelid neurofibroma involving the proximal lacrimal drainage system. A 6-year-old male presented with recurrent painless swelling in the medial part of the left lower eyelid. The patient was misdiagnosed as eyelid polyp and underwent excision biopsy twice elsewhere. Subsequently, the patient presented with a recurrence of swelling and was treated with full-thickness eyelid resection and reconstruction by direct closure. Histopathology showed the presence of spindle cells with hyperchromatic nucl…
