Back pain is a frequent complaint seen in neurological practice. In evaluating back pain, neurologists are asked to evaluate patients for radiculopathy, determine whether they may benefit from surgery, and help guide management. Although disc herniation is the most common etiology of compressive radiculopathy, there are many other causes, including genetic disorders. This article is a discussion of genetic disorders that cause or contribute to radiculopathies. These genetic disorders include neurofibromatosis, Paget's disease of bone, and ankylosing spondylitis. Numerous genetic disorders can

We describe a patient with segmental neurofibromatosis and a large congenital nevus who developed malignant melanoma in the same anatomic distribution. The overlapping presentation suggests a common etiologic link between neurofibromatosis and large congenital nevi and the possibility that neurofibromatosis increases the risk of melanoma with large congenital nevi.

We report two cases of Lisch nodules in both eyes in two women. It was the only ocular manifestation of their Von Recklinghausen disease. The other general signs of their disease were cutaneous neurofibromas. Lisch nodules are melanocytic hamartomas consisting of melanocytic cells containing various quantities of pigment. They can be found in 90 to 100% of neurofibromatosis patients over 6 years of age. They are practically pathognomonic of type 1 neurofibromatosis and their finding is an important diagnostic argument. They must be distinguished from other iris nodules: nevus, melanoma, inflam

A rare plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland in a patient with neurofibromatosis is presented. The clinical manifestations of the disease are reviewed. The need for early diagnosis of neurofibroma is emphasized because of malignant transformation.

Partial unilateral lentiginosis associated with segmental neurofibromatosis is rate. Therefore, we describe here a patient with partial unilateral lentiginosis associated with ipsilateral segmental neurofibromatosis who developed multiple, rice-sized, brown macules on the right side of her face, trunk, and upper arm and several bean-sized, cafe-au-lait spots on the right upper arm and right upper back. To our knowledge, partial unilateral lentiginosis associated with ipsilateral segmental neurofibromatosis has not been reported in the English literature.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatoses (NFs; NF1, NF2 and Schwannomatosis) are incurable genetic syndromes characterized by nerve sheath tumors and often accompanied by substantial emotional distress (e.g., depression and anxiety). Pain is also common but understudied in adults with NF and interferes with daily living. In other medical populations, depression and anxiety have a strong association with pain interference. However, research has not explored the relationship of depression and anxiety to pain interference among adults with NF experiencing pain. The aim of this study was to test the hypoth…

OBJECTIVES: Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), NF2, and schwannomatosis are characterized by a predisposition to develop multiple neurofibromas and … for all comparisons).
CONCLUSIONS: Plasma S100β is not a useful biomarker for tumor burden in the neurofibromatoses. Further work is needed to identify a reliable biomarker of tumor burden in NF patients.

NF2-Schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) is a disease characterized by multiple tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system. Surgery remains an important treatment option, sometimes performed on an urgent basis, but usually planned within the context of complex multi-tumour burden and morbidity. It is difficult to provide a comprehensive generic decision tree because each patient has a unique disease burden, but we will detail in this review the therapeutic indications for each tumor type, vestibular schwannomas, meningiomas, spinal schwannomas and meningiomas, spinal ependymomas and peripheral s

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis 1 and schwannomatosis are characterized by potential lifelong morbidity and life-threatening complications. To date, however, diagnostic and predictive biomarkers are an unmet need in this patient population. The inclusion of biomarker discovery correlatives in neurofibromatosis 1/schwannomatosis clinical trials enables study of low-incidence disease. The implementation of a common data model would further enhance biomarker discovery by enabling effective concatenation of data from multiple studies.

A Guideline Group (GG) was convened from multiple specialties and patients to develop the first comprehensive schwannomatosis guideline. The GG undertook thorough literature review and wrote recommendations for treatment and surveillance. A modified Delphi process was used to gain approval for recommendations which were further altered for maximal consensus. Schwannomatosis is a tumour predisposition syndrome leading to development of multiple benign nerve-sheath non-intra-cutaneous schwannomas that infrequently affect the vestibulocochlear nerves. Two definitive genes (SMARCB1/LZTR1) have bee

Hybrid neurofibroma/schwannoma is a rare variant of hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumours (HPNST). A Medline search up to December 2021 identified only six cases of this tumour in the orbit. We report the case of a 78-year-old man who presented with left exophthalmos. Computed tomography showed a left intraconal orbital mass. The clinico-radiological diagnosis was consistent with an intraconal cavernous angioma. Orbitotomy was performed, obtaining an 18×16×11mm mass. Two different morphologies were seen microscopically, diagnostic of hybrid neurofibroma/schwannoma. HPNSTs of the orbit are unc

Schwannomas are one of the most common peripheral nerve sheath neoplasms. These tumors, which are characteristically slow-growing and encapsulated, can occur in solitary or multiple forms. Although they usually occur sporadically, they can be seen with various genetic tumor predisposition syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2) or schwannomatosis. However, schwannomatosis is a relatively rare disease. We present a case of a 22-year-old patient with segmental schwannomatosis of the sciatic nerve and a comprehensive literature review.

Sporadic neurofibromas of the nipple-areolar complexes are exceptional even in patients with neurofibromatosis. Diffuse neurofibroma is an uncommon subtype of neurofibroma that has received little attention in the imaging literature. As are most superficial lesions, it is often evaluated clinically and if biopsy is needed, it is usually performed without imaging. However the imaging data is quite characteristic with the aim of evaluating the extension in depth and detecting an underlying cancer. We report a case of women without a history of neurofibromatosis presenting a skin thickening disfi

A 67-year-old male presenting with left exophthalmos and progressive visual disturbance was referred to our department. Tumors at the supraclavicular fossa and dorsal femoral region were resected at ages 27 and 45 years. His father and son had both been diagnosed with spinal tumors, and his son's tumor was pathologically diagnosed as a schwannoma. Brain MRI of his son demonstrated no intracranial tumor. Brain MRI of the patient revealed a multilobular tumor of 2 cm diameter compressing the optic nerve medially within the left muscle cone, and no other intracranial tumors. However, large masses

BACKGROUND: Segmental neurofibromatosis was initially described by Miller and Sparks (1977) as manifestations of neurofibromatosis limited to a dermatomal, localized distribution. Now termed mosaic neurofibromatosis, previous literature described this disease in children and adolescents with individual case reports and small-numbered case series. This study presents a large series of children and adolescents with mosaic neurofibromatosis.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of a single institution medical record database was performed on all cases of mosaic neurofibromatosis diagnosed betwe
