Although iris melanomas have an excellent prognosis when diagnosed and treated early, they should not be considered benign lesions. The authors report the orbital recurrence of a melanoma in a patient whose eye had been enucleated 30 years earlier because of an iris melanoma. The clinical, epidemiological and pathological characteristics of iris melanomas are summarized and compared to those of other uveal melanomas. The similarities suggest that iris melanomas are not by nature more benign than other uveal melanomas and that their better prognosis is due to the earlier detection allowed by th

From the original description of Altman and Mehregan (1971) a new clinical type of linear nevus is known as inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN). Two girls of 5 and 4 years of age are reported. One of them had good therapeutical results with the use of trichloroacetic acid. The clinical and histopathological aspects of this nevus are reviewed and the differential diagnosis should be done with: lichen planus, lichen striatus, linear psoriasis, zoniform dermatitis, naevus unius lateris.

Becker's nevus is a hyperpigmented macula that is predominantly located on the anterior trunk or on the scapular region, frequently associated with hypertrichosis. The association of Becker's nevus with other cutaneous, musculoskeletal or maxillofacial anomalies has been called Becker's nevus syndrome. We report a case of a 16-year-old girl with a hyperpigmented macula which spread from her right anterolateral trunk to the inner part of her right thigh accompanied by ipsilateral mammary hypoplasia. The skin lesion started when the patient was seven years old when it was also noticed ipsilatera…

BACKGROUND: Congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform nevus and limb defects (MIM 308050, CHILD) syndrome is an X-linked dominant, male-lethal, multisystem birth defect. Patients suffer from an inflammatory nevus that covers large areas, predominantly of one side of the body, with a sharp midline demarcation. Treatment of CHILD nevus is notoriously difficult.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a novel surgical approach for this disorder.
METHODS: In 2 patients, the CHILD nevus was dermabraded, and the area was covered with split skin grafts obtained from a contralateral unaffe…

BACKGROUND: Pathologists may occasionally have difficulties in reliably assessing the dignity of tumour cells in histological sections, especially in nevi with junctional activity.
PATIENT HISTORY: This case history of a boy suffering from an inflammatory juvenile conjunctival nevus (IJCN) is reported with a follow-up period of 25 years. Seven years after first surgical treatment of a histologically proven nevus, a recurrent pigmented lesion within the former operation area aroused the suspicion of it being a malignant melanoma. Logically, a second excision was performed followed by cryothera…

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by distinctive cutaneous and gastrointestinal venous malformations that usually cause massive or occult gastrointestinal hemorrhage and iron deficiency anemia secondary to the bleeding episodes. It is even a rare cause of gastrointestinal hemorrhage during childhood. We describe a 6-year-old boy who had multiple venous malformations all over his body. He also suffered from several episodes of melena, chronic anemia, and growth retardation. The endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract revealed multiple bluish-black ses…
