Long-Term Nitrogen Removal Performance and Microbial Analysis in a SNAD-Based MBBR at Room Temperature.

In recent years, the simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) process has attracted considerable attention due to its advantages such as low energy consumption and low sludge production. This study investigated the long-term performance and microbial mechanisms of a single-stage moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) employing the SNAD process for treating real domestic sewage at room temperature. A pre-carbon adsorption unit (reactor A) reduced the influent C/N ratio from 5.68:1 to 3.13:1, enabling efficient nitrogen removal in reactor B. Results demonstrated that di

Process-dependent inhibitory effects of zinc-based metal-organic frameworks on nitrifying microbial consortia.

Zinc-based metal-organic frameworks (Zn-MOFs) are attractive for environmental applications; however, their impact on key microbial processes, such as nitrification, remains poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the effects of MOF-5, Zn(II)-MOF, dissolved Zn(II), and their corresponding organic ligands on ammonium oxidation (AO) and nitrite oxidation (NO) using microrespirometric assays. Structural and physicochemical characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of both MOFs and revealed distinct morphologies, crystal structures, and colloidal behavior in aqueous media. For the

Control of cyanobacterial bloom and purification of bloom-laden water by sequential electro-oxidation and electro-oxidation-coagulation.

The outbreaks of cyanobacterial blooms have caused severe threat to aquatic ecosystem and public health. In this work, electrochemical technology with RuO2/IrO2/Ti (RIT) or/and Al as anode for cyanobacterial bloom control and simultaneous water purification were studied. Compared with RIT-Al and Al electrodes, RIT exhibited the highest effects on bloom algae inactivation and inhibition of algae regrowth. Live/dead analysis, SEM, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant system activities revealed that RIT could disintegrate bloom flocs and damage embedded algal cells due to h

Impacts of a subtropical storm on nitrogen functional microbes and associated cycling processes in a river-estuary continuum.

Storms, in subtropical regions such as S.E. China, cause major changes in the physical and biogeochemical fluxes of anthropogenic N species through the river-estuary continuum to the coast. Two weeks continuous observations at a sampling station (Station E) in the upper Jiulong River Estuary (S.E. China) were conducted to track the changes of physical and biogeochemical parameters together with genomic identification of nitrogen cycling microbes through a complete storm event in June 2019. In conjunction with previous N flux measurements, it was found that there was greatly increased flux of N

Nitrifying and denitrifying pathways of methanotrophic bacteria.

Nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting molecule, continues to accumulate in the atmosphere as a product of anthropogenic activities and land-use change. Nitrogen oxides are intermediates of nitrification and denitrification and are released as terminal products under conditions such as high nitrogen load and low oxygen tension among other factors. The rapid completion and public availability of microbial genome sequences has revealed a high level of enzymatic redundancy in pathways terminating in nitrogen oxide metabolites, with few enzymes involved in returning nitrogen ox

The effect of clay particles on the activity of suspended autotrophic nitrifying bacteria and on the performance of an air-lift reactor.

Clay minerals have some properties, namely a high surface area and the ability of ion exchange that may exert some effects on microbial systems. It is often difficult to know the way the clay is exerting its influence and whether its presence improves a given metabolic process. The present work concerns the study of the effect of the addition of powdered kaolin to autotrophic nitrification systems, and includes the study of the effects of the particles on the activity of a suspended nitrifying bacteria consortium and on the performance of an air-lift biofilm reactor used for tertiary nitrifica

Inhibition of ammonia monooxygenase in Nitrosomonas europaea by carbon disulfide.

Carbon disulfide has long been recognized as a potent inhibitor of nitrification, and it is the likely active component in several nitrification inhibitors suitable for field use. The effects of this compound on Nitrosomonas europaea have been investigated, and the site of action has been determined. Low concentrations of CS2 (less than 400 microM) produced a time-dependent inhibition of ammonia-dependent O2 uptake but did not inhibit hydrazine-oxidizing activity. CS2 also produced distinct changes in difference spectra of whole cells. These results suggest that ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) is

Experiences with a large-size WWTP based on activated sludge-biofiltration processes: 25 months of operation.

The South-Budapest Wastewater Treatment Plant (SBWWTP) had been operated as a high-load activated sludge (AS) plant since the middle of the 60s. According to the requirements proposed by the water authorities the treatment process had to be upgraded into nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen) removal. The upgrade of the plant comprised implementation of BIOFOR type nitrifying (NP) and post-denitrifying (DN) biofilters downstream of the AS stage. Phosphorus removal was obtained by chemical precipitation that can be done at five different points for feeding ferric-sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3). Partial flow r

Floating treatment wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment.

Floating islands are a form of treatment wetland characterized by a mat of synthetic matrix at the water surface into which macrophytes can be planted and through which water passes. We evaluated two matrix materials for treating domestic wastewater, recycled plastic and recycled carpet fibers, for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrogen removal. These materials were compared to pea gravel or open water (control). Experiments were conducted in laboratory scale columns fed with synthetic wastewater containing COD, organic and inorganic nitrogen, and mineral salts. Columns were unplanted, natu

Treatment of nitrogen and phosphorus in highly concentrated effluent in SBR and SBBR processes.

Various sludge treatment processes produced supernatant with high ammonia concentration from 500 to 2,000 mgN/L and generally high phosphate concentration. Conversion of ammonia into nitrite via partial nitrification has proven to be an economic way, reducing oxygen and external COD requirements during the nitrification/denitrification process. Two processes with biomass retention are studied simultaneously: the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and the sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). At a temperature of 30 degrees C, the inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria due to high ammonia conce

Influence of filter age on Fe, Mn and NH4+ removal in dual media rapid sand filters used for drinking water production.

Rapid sand filtration is a common method for removal of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and ammonium (NH4+) from anoxic groundwaters used for drinking water production. In this study, we combine geochemical and microbiological data to assess how filter age influences Fe, Mn and NH4+ removal in dual media filters, consisting of anthracite overlying quartz sand, that have been in operation for between ∼2 months and ∼11 years. We show that the depth where dissolved Fe and Mn removal occurs is reflected in the filter medium coatings, with ferrihydrite forming in the anthracite in the top of the filters

Removal of Ampicillin with Nitrifying Cultures in a SBR Reactor.

The presence of antibiotics in wastewater discharges significantly affects the environment, mainly due to the generation of bacterial populations with multiple antibiotic resistances. The cometabolic capacity of nitrifying sludge to simultaneously remove ammonium (NH4+) and emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), including antibiotics, has been reported. In the present study, the removal capacity of 50 mg ampicillin (AMP)/L by nitrifying cultures associated with biosorption and biotransformation processes was evaluated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system. The contribution of nitrifying en

Simultaneous removal of phosphorous and nitrogen by ammonium assimilation and aerobic denitrification of novel phosphate-accumulating organism Pseudomonas chloritidismutans K14.

Pseudomonas chloritidismutans K14, a novel phosphate-accumulating organism with the capacity to perform ammonium assimilation, aerobic denitrification, and phosphorus removal, was isolated from aquaculture sediments. It produced no hemolysin, and showed susceptibility to most antibiotics. Optimum conditions were achieved with sodium pyruvate as a carbon source, a C/N ratio of 10, pH of 7.5, temperature of 27 °C, P/N ratio of 0.26, and shaking at 140 rpm. Under optimum conditions, the highest removal efficiencies of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate were 99.82%, 99.11%, and 99.78%, respectively; t

Nitrobacter and Nitrospira genera as representatives of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria: detection, quantification and growth along the lower Seine River (France).

Pollution from agriculture and urban effluents influences the ecology and biochemical functioning of the Seine River. Nitrification dominates nitrogen transformations downstream of the effluents of the Paris wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Achères, treating, by activated sludge the wastewater of 6.5 million inhabitant equivalents from Paris and its suburbs, without nitrification and denitrification treatment. It discharges effluents containing large amounts of nitrogen, ammonium mostly (approximately 30 mg L(-1) N-NH(4+) L(-1)), on average 45 mg L(-1) of suspended particulate matter, high

Single Species In Vitro Assays with Nitrifying Bacteria and Archaea for Assessing the Toxicity of Pesticides on Soil Microorganisms.

Single species tests on surrogate organisms from different trophic levels constitute a cornerstone in aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicology, representing a major tool for assessing pesticide ecotoxicity. However, there are no assays approved under the EU regulatory framework that specifically target soil microorganisms, despite their pivotal role in ecosystems. This study evaluated the toxicity of pesticides on ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM), recognized as potential indicators of pesticide toxicity in soil, using a single species in vitro testing system. We assessed the toxicity of ten

The enrichment characterisation of Nitrospira under high DO conditions.

Nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) are crucial to nitrification and nitrogen elimination in wastewater treatment. Mass reports exist on the links between NOB and other microorganisms, for instance, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). However, a few studies exist on the enrichment characterisation of NOB under high dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions. In this study, NOB was designed to be enriched individually under high DO conditions in a continuous aeration sequencing batch reactor (SBR), and the kinetic characterisation of NOB was evaluated. The analysis revealed that the average NO2--N removal rat

Microbially driven Fe-N cycle: Intrinsic mechanisms, enhancement, and perspectives.

The iron‑nitrogen (FeN) cycle driven by microbes has great potential for treating wastewater. Fe is a metal that is frequently present in the environment and one of the crucial trace elements needed by microbes. Due to its synergistic role in the microbial N removal process, Fe goes much beyond the essential nutritional needs of microorganisms. Investigating the mechanisms behind the linked Fe-N cycle driven by microbes is crucial. The Fe-N cycle is frequently connected with anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox), nitrification, denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA

Non-target impacts of pesticides on soil N transformations, abundances of nitrifying and denitrifying genes, and nitrous oxide emissions.

Agriculture is the leading contributor to global nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, mostly from soils. We examined the non-target impacts of four pesticides on N transformations, N cycling genes and N2O emissions from sugarcane-cropped soil. The pesticides, including a herbicide glyphosate (GLY), an insecticide imidacloprid (IMI), a fungicide methoxy ethyl mercuric chloride (MEMC) and a fumigant methyl isothiocyanate (MITC), were added to the soil and incubated in laboratory at 25 °C. The soil microcosms were maintained at two water contents, 55 % and 90 % water holding capacity (WHC), to simulate

Multi-isotope tracing nitrate dynamics and sources during thermal stratification in a deep reservoir.

Excessive nitrate (NO3-) input to reservoirs is a global concern. However, the dynamics and sources of NO3- under thermal stratification in deep reservoirs were rarely explored. In this study, multi-stable isotopes (δ15N/δ18O-NO3-, δ15N-particulate nitrogen (PN), δ15N-dissolved total nitrogen (DTN), and δ2H/δ18O-H2O) and a Bayesian mixing model were applied to reveal the biogeochemical processes and sources of NO3- in a deep reservoir with obvious nitrogen pollution. The results showed that the reservoir was thermally stratified in July while vertically mixed in October. The distribution of δ2
