[The Fukushima nuclear accident: consequences for Japan and for us].

The Fukushima accident was the consequence of a preceding 2-fold natural catastrophe: the earth quake of 11 March 2011 and the subsequent tsunami. Due to favourable winds and to evacuation measures the radiation exposure to the general population in Japan as a whole and with some exceptions in the region outside the evacuation zone, too, was low. In this article the attempt is made to give an estimate of health consequences to the public. This is based upon WHO's dose estimates, knowledge of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, of the atmospheric nuclear bomb testing in Kazakhstan and o

Significance of radiation exposure from work-related chest X-rays for epidemiological studies of radiation workers.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiologic studies of workers at nuclear weapons facilities have not included X-ray exposures as part of the occupational radiation exposure. The research objective was to determine the contribution of work-related chest X-ray (WRX) exposure relative to the cumulative occupational radiation exposure. METHODS: Cases and controls were identified from a cohort of workers whose employment began as early as 1943. Medical records for 297 subjects were used to determine the bone marrow dose from their X-ray examinations. Individual dose data, however, were only available for

Studies of workers exposed to low doses of external radiation.

Currently, several epidemiologic studies of workers who have been exposed occupationally to low levels of radiation are being conducted. They include studies of workers in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada involved in the production of both defense materials and nuclear power. This paper focuses on studies evaluating the possible adverse effects that result from external exposure to radiation.

A realistic appraisal of boron neutron capture therapy as a cancer treatment modality.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a binary therapeutic modality based on the nuclear capture and fission reactions that occur when the stable isotope boron-10 is irradiated with neutrons to produce high-energy alpha particles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei. In this Commentary we will focus on a number of papers that were presented at a Symposium entitled "Current Clinical Status of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy and Paths to the Future", which was held in September 2017 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing. Results were presented by clinicians from Japan, Finland, the United

Analysis of the mortality experience amongst U.S. nuclear power industry workers after chronic low-dose exposure to ionizing radiation.

Workers employed in 15 utilities that generate nuclear power in the United States have been followed for up to 18 years between 1979 and 1997. Their cumulative dose from whole body ionizing radiation has been determined from the dose records maintained by the facilities themselves and the REIRS and REMS systems maintained by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Energy, respectively. Mortality in the cohort from a number of causes has been analyzed with respect to individual radiation doses. The cohort displays a very substantial healthy worker effect, i.e. considerably lower

Enhancing Environmental Sustainability in Diagnostic Radiology: Focus on CT, MRI, and Nuclear Medicine.

Medical imaging, including MRI, CT, and nuclear medicine play a critical role in healthcare but also imposes significant environmental burdens due to high energy consumption and waste production. Of the diagnostic modalities, MRI is the most energy-intensive modality, consuming up to 60 kWh per scan, followed by CT, which ranges from 1.0 to 11.4 kWh per scan. Lifecycle analyses show that operational energy use far exceeds manufacturing emissions, highlighting the need for energy-saving strategies. Implementing standby and power-off modes, optimizing scan protocols, and using AI-driven efficien

Atomic-Scale Hidden Point-Defect Complexes Induce Ultrahigh-Irradiation Hardening in Tungsten.

Tungsten displays high strength in extreme temperature and radiation environments and is considered a promising plasma facing material for fusion nuclear reactors. Unlike other metals, it experiences substantial irradiation hardening, which limits service life and presents safety concerns. The origin of ultrahigh-irradiation hardening in tungsten cannot be well-explained by conventional strengthening theories. Here, we demonstrate that irradiation leads to near 3-fold increases in strength, while the usual defects that are generated only contribute less than one-third of the hardening. An anal…

Neutron activation-based gamma scintigraphy in pharmacoscintigraphic evaluation of an Egalet constant-release drug delivery system.

This paper is a report from a pharmacoscintigraphic study with an Egalet constant-release system containing caffeine and natural abundance samarium oxide. First the formulation was tested in vitro to clarify integrity during irradiation in the nuclear reactor. Then six healthy male volunteers were enrolled into the in vivo study. The in vitro release of caffeine obeyed all the time linear zero-order kinetics. The in vivo release of radioactive Sm2O3 consisted of three consequent linear phases with different slopes. The release rate was fastest while the product was in the small intestine and s

Chronic cutaneous damage after accidental exposure to ionizing radiation: the Chernobyl experience.

BACKGROUND: The hazards of acute radiation exposure are well known. Bone marrow failure from total body gamma or neutron irradiation is the most clinically relevant aspect of acute radiation disease. With nonhomogeneous exposure, as is characteristic in accidents, other organ systems, such as the skin, may be more important in determining clinical prognosis. This became obvious in the two worst radiation accidents since 1945, the Chernobyl accident in April 1986 and the Goiania accident in September 1987. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe the characteristic chronic sequelae of accidental

[The immediate and late results of radiation effects on the occurrence of congenital defects in the locomotor apparatus based on screening data on newborns in the maternity hospitals of the city of Kiev].

On the basis of screening of 15939 newborns at the maternity homes of Kiev after the accident at the Chernobyl atomic station it was found that the number of children with congenital malformation of the locomotor apparatus in 1991-1992 increased by 28.7% as compared with the data of the first postaccident years (1986-1987). Congenital pathology of the hip joint (dysplasia in average 23.5 per 1000 births, hip dislocation 3.6:1000) and foot deformity (7.9:1000) had the highest incidence with a tendency to increase at the latest years.

Chronic stress, leukocyte subpopulations, and humoral response to latent viruses.

Psychological stress has been shown to affect immune system status and function, but most studies of this relationship have focused on acute stress and/or laboratory situations. The present study compared total numbers of leukocytes and lymphocyte subpopulations (determined by flow cytometry) and antibody titers to latent and nonlatent viruses among a group of chronically stressed individuals living near the damaged Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power plant with those of a demographically comparable control group. Urinary catecholamine and cortisol levels were also examined. Residents of the

A re-activation model for 169Yb intensity modulated brachytherapy sources accounting for spatiotemporal isotopic composition.

BACKGROUND: Intensity modulated brachytherapy based on partially shielded intracavitary and interstitial applicators is possible with a cost-effective 169Yb production method. 169Yb is a traditionally expensive isotope suitable for this purpose, with an average γ-ray energy of 93 keV. Re-activating a single 169Yb source multiple times in a nuclear reactor between clinical uses was shown to theoretically reduce cost by approximately 75% relative to conventional single-activation sources. With re-activation, substantial spatiotemporal variation in isotopic source composition is expected between

High-Temperature Mechanical and Dynamical Properties of γ-(U,Zr) Alloys.

High-temperature body-centered cubic (BCC) γ-U is effectively stablized by γ-(U,Zr) alloys that also make it feasible to use it as a nuclear … gth and melting points, such as Vickers hardness and Debye temperature, making it more suitable for nuclear reactors. Furthermore, the Zr concentrations in γ-(U,Zr) alloys have an excellent effect on these properties. In addition, the dynamical structure factor reveals that γ-U shows different structural features after alloying with Zr. The present simulation data …

Hot particle dosimetry and radiobiology--past and present.

Small high-activity radioactive particles of nominal diameter ranging from approximately 1 mm down to several microm have been a radiological concern over the last 30 years in and around European and American nuclear reactor facilities. These particles have often been referred to as 'hot particles'. The 'hot particle problem' came into prominent concern in the late 1960s. The potential carcinogenic effects in lungs as the result of irradiation by discrete small particles containing alpha-emitting radionuclides, particularly (239)Pu, were claimed by some to be several orders of magnitude greate

Bone marrow dose estimates from work-related medical x-ray examinations given between 1943 and 1966 for personnel from five U.S. nuclear facilities.

Inclusion of dose from work-related medical x-ray examinations with occupational external dose in an epidemiological study may reduce misclassification of exposures and provide more accurate assessment of leukemia risk from occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. In a multi-site leukemia case-control study, annual bone marrow doses due to work-related x-ray examinations given between 1943 and 1966 were estimated for cases and controls employed at five nuclear facilities. Only active bone marrow dose from photofluorographic chest and routine lumbar spine x rays were included. Bone marrow d
