Octanoic Acid-Rich Enteral Nutrition Alleviates Sepsis-Associated Metabolic Disorders by Suppressing White Adipose Tissue Browning in Mice.

Sepsis is a life-threatening clinical syndrome accompanied by severe systemic metabolic disorders, and pathological white adipose tissue (WAT) browning is a core driver that exacerbates negative energy balance, skeletal muscle dysfunction and insulin resistance. Octanoic acid (OA), a C8 medium-chain fatty acid with superior ketogenic capacity, is a promising functional nutrient for sepsis intervention. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and underlying mechanism of OA-rich enteral nutrition (EN) on sepsis-associated metabolic disorders. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to lipopol

Gastrointestinal adverse reactions and metabolism-nutrition disorders associated with hypomethylating agents: a pharmacovigilance study with exploratory mechanistic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypomethylating agents, particularly azacitidine and decitabine, are widely used for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia. Gastrointestinal adverse events and metabolism- and nutrition-related disorders may compromise nutritional intake, metabolic homeostasis, treatment tolerance, and clinical outcomes. However, real-world evidence regarding these safety profiles remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize gastrointestinal and metabolism- and nutrition-related adverse event reporting signals associated with azacitidine and decitabi

Development and content validity of a nutrition knowledge questionnaire for individuals living with spinal cord injuries and disorders.

STUDY DESIGN: Mixed methods OBJECTIVES: Individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D) experience several chronic and SCI-specific secondary health complications that are influenced by nutrition, which is a modifiable risk factor. Improving nutritional knowledge is essential to support healthy dietary behaviors, yet no validated tool exists in this population. This study describes the development and content validation of a nutrition knowledge questionnaire for individuals with SCI/D. SETTING: Veterans Health Administration and a research rehabilitation hospital in Chicago, USA.

Joint Associations of Plasma Nutritional Biomarkers and Uterine Fibroids with Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy contribute substantially to maternal morbidity and mortality, and occur with increased frequency among women with uterine fibroids. Biomarkers involved in oxidative stress and endothelial function, including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and homocysteine, have been studied in relation to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, but their relationship to fibroid-associated risk has not been well characterized, particularly in racially and ethnically diverse populations. STUDY DESIGN: This study was a retrospective analysis of the Boston Birth Cohor

Transdiagnostic Neurobiological and Nutritional Factors in Eating Disorders: Implications for Integrative Treatment Models.

Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge-eating disorder (BED), are complex psychiatric conditions characterized by high morbidity and mortality. Increasing evidence suggests that beyond disorder-specific symptomatology, shared transdiagnostic mechanisms contribute to their onset and persistence. This narrative review synthesizes current data on neurobiological and nutritional factors implicated in EDs, with particular emphasis on trait-state interactions and starvation-induced neuroadaptations. Predisposing vulnerabilities such as heightened anx

Nutritional Intake and Sensory Processing in School-Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background: Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly experience sensory processing that differs from general-population norms, and the autistic lived experience of eating includes preferences for routine, and sensory processing difficulty related to scents, tastes, temperatures, and textures of food. Meanwhile, research indicates that nutrients involved in one-carbon metabolism (OCM) may be related to sensory processing. Methods: This study enrolled 33 school-aged children with autism to assess whether OCM nutrient intake is associated with sensory processing. Parents

Nutritional management of metabolic disorders in neonates and infants in Saudi Arabia: consensus recommendations.

Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) are inherited disorders affecting metabolism which can result in intellectual disability, cognitive impairment or death if left untreated. Nutritional management plays a major role in ensuring adequate growth, nutritional status and development, reducing levels of toxic metabolites, preventing deficiencies and avoiding catabolism in infants with IEM. The aim of this consensus is to provide recommendations for nutritional management of metabolic diseases in neonates and infants in Saudi Arabia, where a high frequency of IEM has been reported.Consensus generatio

Ketogenic Diet as a Nutritional Metabolic Intervention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Narrative Review.

The substantial evidence supporting the ketogenic diet (KD) in epilepsy management has spurred research into its effects on other neurological and psychiatric conditions. Despite differences in characteristics, symptoms, and underlying mechanisms, these conditions share common pathways that the KD may influence. The KD reverses metabolic dysfunction. Moreover, it has been shown to support neuroprotection through mechanisms such as neuronal energy support, inflammation reduction, amelioration of oxidative stress, and reversing mitochondrial dysfunction. The adequate intake of dietary nutrients

Binge eating disorder and stress level among patients attending nutrition counseling.

Introduction: binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by eating much more than what most people would eat under similar circumstances. Inability to cope with stress and emotions may be the reason for BED episodes. Objective: to assess the level of stress and BED severity based on the number of episodes of compulsive overeating among patients attending nutrition counseling. Methods: a total of 100 people (60 women and 40 men) were taking part in the study. A questionnaire in which subjects answered questions concerning diet, number of meals, and coping with stressful situations was used. A

Gastrointestinal symptoms and nutritional issues in patients with hypermobility disorders: assessment, diagnosis and management.

Patients diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobile spectrum disorders are increasingly presenting to secondary and tertiary care centres with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and nutritional issues. Due to the absence of specific guidance, these patients are investigated, diagnosed and managed heterogeneously, resulting in a growing concern that they are at increased risk of iatrogenic harm. This review aims to collate the evidence for the causes of GI symptoms, nutritional issues and associated conditions as well as the burden of polypharmacy in this group of patients. W

Epidemics and outbreaks of peripheral nervous system disorders: II. Toxic and nutritional causes.

Peripheral neuropathies have various causes, both infectious and non-infectious. When we think of "epidemics", we often refer to an infectious or even post-infectious origin. Nevertheless, the history of mankind is marked by episodes of epidemics of peripheral neuropathies of non-infectious nature, either of nutritional or toxic origin: we present here the main causes of such epidemics.

Lower serum leptin levels in female students of the nutritional sciences with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has accumulated that in both acutely ill and recovered patients with either anorexia or bulimia nervosa circulating leptin levels (LL) are lower than in controls matched for body mass index (BMI; kg/m(2)). It is unknown if these lower leptin levels represent a state or trait marker. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed to confirm the lowered leptin levels in eating disordered females and to identify underlying mechanisms. METHODS: We screened 181 female students of the nutritional sciences for eating disorders with the respective module of the M-Composite International Diagnostic

An introduction to nutritional treatment in inborn errors of metabolism--different disorders, different approaches.

Treatment of metabolic disease aims to restore homeostasis, where possible. This can be achieved in a number of ways. For disorders of intermediary metabolism, treatment involves a thorough understanding of the disorder and the pathogenesis of the deleterious effects The various approaches indicated may involve substrate restriction, replacement of deficient products, removal of toxic metabolites or stimulation of residual enzymes. Newer therapies include enzyme replacement and gene therapy. Often, the cornerstone of treatment is dietary. Substrate restriction includes not only a diet low in t

Nutritional deficiency disorders and high mortality among children of the Great Andamanese tribe.

BACKGROUND: The population of the Great Andamanese tribe of the Andaman Islands has been declining at a rapid pace. The case fatality rate during a recent outbreak of dysentery was 30.8%, all the deaths being among under-fives. As malnutrition is known to potentiate susceptibility to death due to infectious diseases, we undertook a study to determine the prevalence of malnutrition among the Great Andamanese tribe and its role in contributing to the high mortality among them due to infectious diseases. METHODS: The study included a diet survey, nutritional anthropometry, clinical examination,
