Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC): occupational health and safety aspects.

BACKGROUND: Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) is a novel approach for treating peritoneal carcinomatosis. First encouraging results have been obtained in human patients. However, delivering chemotherapy as an aerosol might result in an increased risk of exposure to health care workers, as compared with other administration routes. METHODS: PIPAC was applied in two human patients using chemotherapeutic drugs (doxorubicin and cisplatin), and air contamination levels were measured under real clinical conditions. Air was collected on a cellulose nitrate filter with a flow o

[Health effects of occupational exposure among shoe workers. A review].

World-wide epidemiological studies provide evidence that the employment in the shoe production and repair plants is associated with an enhanced risk for cancer (primarily nose and nasal sinuses). Some of these compounds exert carcinogenic effect. This paper provides a review of the results of epidemiological studies on health e

Planning for biological disasters. Occupational health nurses as "first responders".

1. As a result of recent terrorist events, there is an immediate need for occupational nurses to review their disaster plans and to develop strategies to cope with bioterrorism in their workplaces. 2. Occupational health in surgery: risks extend beyond the operating room.

Surgeons routinely work with potentially infectious materials. The risk of acquiring a disease from one percutaneous exposure is 0.3-0.4% for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) 6-30% for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and 2.7-10% for hepatitis C virus (HCV). Rates of blood contacts vary but may reach up to 11.9 per 100 h in the operating room. Residents are at highest risk, and obstetrics and gynaecology surgeons suffered the highest rate of exposures (10%) as a group. Contributing risk factors include trauma or emergency orthopaedic procedures, high patient blood loss, long procedures and holding ti

The final rule establishes uniform requirements to protect the Nation's miners from occupational noise-induced hearing loss. The rule is derived in part from existing MSHA noise standards, and from the Department of Labor's existing occupational noise exposure standard for general industry promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). As a result of the Agency's ongoing review of its safety and health standards, MSHA determined
