The Genus Carissa: An Ethnopharmacological, Phytochemical and Pharmacological Review.

Carissa L. is a genus of the family Apocynaceae, with about 36 species as evergreen shrubs or small trees native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Oceania. Most of Carissa plants have been employed and utilized in traditional medicine for various ailments, such as headache, chest complains, rheumatism, oedema, gonorrhoea, syphilis, rabies. So far, only nine Carissa species have been phytochemically studied, which led to the identification of 123 compounds including terpenes, flavonoids, lignans, sterols, simple phenolic compounds, fatty acids and esters, and so on. Pharma…

Emergence of echovirus type 13 as a prominent enterovirus.

In 2001, increased activity of the rarely detected enterovirus echovirus type 13 (E13) was observed in the United States. This article descr … for a total of 521 cases. All characterized E13 isolates from the United States, Europe, Asia, and Oceania recovered in 2000-2002 were at least 95% identical to each other in VP1 capsid gene sequence, but they were genetically distinct from E13 isolates recovered before 2000. Continued surveillance of enteroviruses is important to alert physicians and pu …

Varicocele in paediatric age: Is the scientific community on the correct pathway?

Varicocele is the primary cause of male infertility and the interests of research about varicocele have changed in the last years. The aim o … , while for Asia it was videolaparoscopy. The main issue in South America was fertility; Africa and Oceania do not have enough publications to make statistics. Paediatric articles account for less than one-third of overall articles. The first interest of research is surgical technique. In Europe, the topics seem to exclude fertility potential.

Global patterns of cardia and non-cardia gastric cancer incidence in 2012.

OBJECTIVE: Globally, gastric cancer incidence shows remarkable international variation and demonstrates distinct characteristics by the two major topographical subsites, cardia (CGC) and non-cardia (NCGC). Because global incidence estimates by subsite are lacking, we aimed to describe the worldwide incidence patterns of CGC and NCGC separately. DESIGN: Using Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Volume X (CI5X), we ascertained the proportions of CGC and NCGC by country, sex and age group (<65 and ≥65 years). These derived proportions were applied to GLOBOCAN 2012 data to estimate country-specif

Effect of breastfeeding promotion interventions on child growth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: To update a previous systematic review and meta-analyses about the effect of breastfeeding promotion interventions on child growth. METHODS: Studies evaluating the effect of any type of breastfeeding promotion intervention on child weight, length (or height) and weight/height (or BMI) were screened. Papers published between 2006 and 2014 were checked using the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Lilacs and SciELO. RESULTS: Sixteen studies were added to 19 other studies identified in the previous review, resulting in 35 studies. Meta-anal

Contamination distribution and non-biological removal pathways of typical tetracycline antibiotics in the environment: A review.

While the occurrence and removal technologies of tetracyclines in the environment have been reported, a comprehensive systematic summary and analysis remain limited, especially for new generations compounds such as doxycycline. In this review, the latest information regarding the distribution of various tetracyclines in different countries over the past seven years (2017-2023) reveals a notable absence of research reports in North America and Oceania. With China as the representative country, the investigation indicates that the maximum concentrations of TCs exceed 5 µg/L. The maximum concentr…

[The vivax malaria causative agent Plasmodium ovale: the present global area, intraspecies polymorphism, importation to the Russian Federation (1992-2011)].

The global area for Plasmodium ovale is small as compared with that for other species of human malaria pathogens. It has expanded in Asian areas and remained as before in the African ones. In the past 20 years, there have been 2129 malaria cases imported from far abroad to Russia, including 84 (4%) cases of vivax malaria (P. ovale). The patients were most foreign citizens: 70 from 20 African countries and 7 from two countries of Oceania, such as Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The other 7 patients were Russia's people who had returned from different countries of Africa. For this period there h…

FIRST CASE OF HUMAN INFECTION BY Bertiella studeri (Blanchard, 1891) Stunkard,1940 (Cestoda; Anoplocephalidae) IN BRAZIL.

Cestodes of the Bertiella genus are parasites of non-human primates found in Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Species Bertiella studeri and Bertiella mucronata could, accidentally, infect human beings. The infection occurs from ingestion of mites from the Oribatida order containing cysticercoid larvae of the parasite. The objective of this report is to register the first case of human infection by Bertiella studeri in Brazil. Proglottids of the parasite, found in the stool sample of a two-and-a-half-year-old child, were fixed, stained and microscopically observed to evaluate its morphol…

Reappraisal of known malaria resistance loci in a large multicenter study.

Many human genetic associations with resistance to malaria have been reported, but few have been reliably replicated. We collected data on 11,890 cases of severe malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum and 17,441 controls from 12 locations in Africa, Asia and Oceania. We tested 55 SNPs in 27 loci previously reported to associate with severe malaria. There was evidence of association at P < 1 × 10(-4) with the HBB, ABO, ATP2B4, G6PD and CD40LG loci, but previously reported associations at 22 other loci did not replicate in the multicenter analysis. The large sample size made it possible to identif…

Rapid prehistoric extinction of iguanas and birds in Polynesia.

The Tongoleleka archaeological site on Lifuka Island, Kingdom of Tonga, is a rich accumulation of pottery, marine mollusks, and nonhuman bones that represents first human contact on a small island in Remote Oceania approximately 2,850 years ago. The lower strata contain decorated Lapita-style pottery and bones of an extinct iguana (Brachylophus undescribed sp.) and numerous species of extinct birds. The upper strata instead feature Polynesian Plainware pottery and bones of extant species of vertebrates. A stratigraphic series of 20 accelerator-mass spectrometer radiocarbon dates on individual …

Global blue carbon losses from salt marshes exceed restoration gains.

Salt marsh soil organic carbon (SOC) is a key blue carbon pool affected by both disturbance and restoration; yet its long-term global dynamics remains poorly understood. Here we provide the global assessment of surface SOC changes in salt marshes from 2002 to 2019, combining multi-source remote sensing imagery with the machine learning calibrated by field observations. We find a net global SOC loss of 0.52 million tonnes, primarily driven by declines in North America and Oceania, which are only partially offset by gains in Asia and South America. The United States alone accounts for ~60% of th…
