Tracing neural pathways in snail olfaction: from the tip of the tentacles to the brain and beyond.

The anatomical organization of the olfactory system of terrestrial snails and slugs is described in this paper, primarily on the basis of experiments using the African snail Achatina fulica. Behavioral studies demonstrate the functional competence of olfaction in mediating food finding, conspecific attraction, and homing. The neural substrate for olfaction is characterized by an extraordinarily large number of neurons relative to the rest of the nervous system, and by the fact that many of them are unusually small. There exist multiple serial and parallel pathways connecting the olfactory orga

Acetylcholinesterase activity in the developing olfactory bulb: a biochemical study on normal maturation and the influence of peripheral and central connections.

In the newborn rat olfactory bulb (OB), the specific activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is about 20% of the adult value. During postnatal development, the specific activity remains unchanged until day 10; a growth spurt of 5X is observed between days 10 and 25, when adult values (90 nmoles ACh/min/mg protein; 6 nmol/min/mg wet wt.) are reached. However, total activity shows continuous increase slowly at first and rapidly between days 10 to 30, reaching a plateau by day 60. Between birth to day 60 total activity increases 65X. To determine the influence of peripheral and central connection

Rapid temporal processing in the olfactory bulb underlies concentration-invariant odor identification and signal decorrelation.

In a dynamic environment, sensory systems must filter out irrelevant information to construct a stable percept. Animals who rely on smell need to identify and discriminate odors despite fluctuations in concentration, yet odor receptor activation is strongly concentration dependent. Here we explored how odor signals are transformed within the mouse olfactory bulb (OB) by developing an all-optical approach to identify the connectivity between odor receptor channels (glomeruli) and the mitral and tufted cells (MTCs), while monitoring their odor responses. We found that the glomeruli and MTCs acti

Mammalian pheromones.

Mammalian pheromones control a myriad of innate social behaviors and acutely regulate hormone levels. Responses to pheromones are highly robust, reproducible, and stereotyped and likely involve developmentally predetermined neural circuits. Here, I review several facets of pheromone transduction in mammals, including (a) chemosensory receptors and signaling components of the main olfactory epithelium and vomeronasal organ involved in pheromone detection; (b) pheromone-activated neural circuits subject to sex-specific and state-dependent modulation; and (c) the striking chemical diversity of ma

[Immunoreactive somatostatin in the peripheral olfactory system and nasal mucosa of the human].

Immunohistochemically, the cyclic retradecapeptide somatostatin was demonstrated in periglomerular cells and fibres of the glomerular layer (Fig. 3) of the human olfactory bulb as well as in the superficial granule layer and fibres (Fig. 2) of the olfactory tract. Additionally, somatostatin was found in endothelial cells of subepithelial arterioles and capillaries of the regio olfactoria (Fig. 4a, b) and superior turbinate. We assume that somatostatin has a paracrine transmitter function in the peripheral olfactory system and a regulative function on the blood flow of the superior nasal mucosa

Selective retrograde transport of tritiated D-aspartate from the olfactory bulb to the anterior olfactory nucleus, pyriform cortex and nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract in the rat.

After an injection of [3H]D-aspartate into the olfactory bulb of the rat, retrogradely labeled cells were detected bilaterally in the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON), and ipsilaterally in the pyriform cortex (PC) and nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract (NLOT). These results suggest a certain selective retrograde transport of this amino acid, and are discussed in relation to transmitter candidates in the olfactory bulb.

[Intracisternal length of the brain path and nerve tracts of the I to IV cranial nerves].

The olfactory bulb has a length of 12.27 mm whereas the length of the olfactory tract from the beginning to where it crosses the optic nerve is 21.2 mm (mean). The intracranial portion of the optic nerve is 10.3 mm long. From the brain stem to its dural exit the III nerve measures 18.82 mm, and the IV nerve 32.65 mm. The range of variation in the lengths of the nerves, as well as their immediate relations are included in the investigation.

An immunocytochemical study of the development of the olfactory system in the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L., Teleostei).

Antisera against a variety of substances have been found to produce an identical immunoreaction in the developing olfactory system of a teleost, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). The label is localized in the olfactory placode, the olfactory nerve and those parts of the secondary olfactory tracts which constitute the dorsal descending fascicles and the ventral descending fibers of the medial olfactory tract. The label was first detected 3 days after fertilization (3D) in the olfactory placode where labeled supporting cells were observed. At 4D, the label was observed at th

Organization of projections from olfactory epithelium to olfactory bulb in the frog, Rana pipiens.

One hypothesis for the coding of olfactory quality is that regions of the olfactory epithelium are differentially sensitive to particular odor qualities and that this regional sensitivity is conveyed to the olfactory bulb in a topographic manner by the olfactory nerve. A corollary to this hypothesis is that there is a sufficiently orderly connection between the epithelium and the olfactory bulb to convey this topographical coding. Thus we examined topography in the projection from epithelium to bulb in the frog, which has been the subject of numerous electrophysiological studies but has not ye

Valence opponency in peripheral olfactory processing.

A hallmark of complex sensory systems is the organization of neurons into functionally meaningful maps, which allow for comparison and contrast of parallel inputs via lateral inhibition. However, it is unclear whether such a map exists in olfaction. Here, we address this question by determining the organizing principle underlying the stereotyped pairing of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) in Drosophila sensory hairs, wherein compartmentalized neurons inhibit each other via ephaptic coupling. Systematic behavioral assays reveal that most paired ORNs antagonistically regulate the same type of b

Growth factors and their receptors in the olfactory system.

The olfactory epithelium is unique in the mammalian nervous system as it is a site of continual neurogenesis. Constant turnover of primary sensory neurons in the periphery results in continuous remodeling of neuronal circuits and synapses in the olfactory bulb throughout life. Most of the specific mechanisms and factors that control and modulate this process are not known. Recent studies suggest that growth factors, and their receptors, may play a crucial role in the development and continuous regeneration of olfactory neurons, i.e. particularly in neuronal proliferation, neurite outgrowth, fa

[Study of the function of nerve growth factor in the olfactory tract of the mouse].

The aim of this study was to examine the function of nerve growth factor (BGF) in the olfactory tract of mice. Using the mice which had received unilateral olfactory bulbectomy and in which antibodies to NGF had been continuously infused with into the contralateral olfactory blub, three kinds of analysis were performed: histological analysis of the olfactory epithelium by HE staining, immunohistochemical analysis of the olfactory epithelium using polyclonal antibodies to trk which forms the NGF receptor, and olfactory-mediated behavioral analysis with cycloheximide. These animals had been sacr

Magnetic resonance imaging of the olfactory apparatus.

We review the normal anatomy of the olfactory system with special emphasis on its extraaxial portions. Pathological processes affecting this cranial nerve are divided into those that do not require imaging and those that do. Processes in which patients benefit from imaging, mostly with magnetic resonance, include suspected tumors and congenital abnormalities.

Expression of galectin-1 in the mouse olfactory system.

Primary sensory olfactory axons arise from the olfactory neuroepithelium that lines the nasal cavity and then project via the olfactory nerve into the olfactory bulb. The beta-galactoside binding lectin, galectin-1, and its laminin ligand have been implicated in the growth of these axons along this pathway. In galectin-1 null mutant mice, a subpopulation of primary sensory olfactory axons fails to reach its targets in the olfactory bulb. In the present study we examined the spatiotemporal expression pattern of galectin-1 in normal mice in order to understand its role in the development of the

Regeneration and rewiring of rodent olfactory sensory neurons.

The olfactory sensory neurons are the only neurons in the mammalian nervous system that not only regenerate naturally and in response to injury, but also project to specific targets in the brain. The stem cells in the olfactory epithelium commit to both neuronal and non-neuronal lineages depending on the environmental conditions. They provide a continuous supply of new neurons. A newly generated neuron must express a specific odorant receptor gene and project to a central target consist of axons expressing the same receptor type. Recent studies have provided insights into this highly regulated
