The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term radiological results obtained with open reduction and fixation of unilateral mandibular condyle fractures in 10 patients. CT images taken at the end of the follow-up period (average of 22 months, range 7 to 33 months), were traced and digitized, and the position and morphology of the fractured condylar process was statistically compared with those of the contralateral non-fractured condylar process in the coronal, transverse and sagittal planes. Little difference was observed in the position or morphology of the condylar process in the op

Fourteen consecutive patients with acute displaced scaphoid waist fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The operative technique consisted of anatomic reduction of the displaced scaphoid waist fracture, correction of carpal instability, radial bone grafting for comminution, and internal fixation with K-wires or Herbert screw. The patients were evaluated an average of 26 months (range, 4-48 months) after surgery. Thirteen of the 14 (93%) fractures united. The average time to union was 11.5 weeks (range, 8-20 weeks). Fracture union was confirmed with trispiral tomograp

Nine patients with normal fracture healing after open reduction and internal fixation presented with late infection 15 months to 19 years after injury. Eight of the nine patients had a history of pain at the fracture site for 3 weeks or longer. Elevated temperature and white blood cell count were unreliable indicators of infection. Six patients had an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate that correlated with osteomyelitis. Roentgenograms showed resorption around the implant in seven patients and a small nidus in two patients. There was a change in position of fixation screws in four patient

Comminuted intraarticular fractures of the distal radius present a difficult problem in management. It is well established that unreduced significant articular incongruency will result in early degenerative osteoarthritis. The technical demands of, and the results to be expected from, formal open reduction and internal fixation of these comminuted articular fractures have not been addressed in the current literature. From 1981 to 1986, 20 patients were treated by open reduction after failure of closed means. Seventeen patients were personally reviewed at an average follow-up of 3.25 years. The

We reviewed the cases of 107 patients who underwent surgical treatment of an isolated fracture of the olecranon. Fifty-three patients were treated by primary excision and fifty-four, by open reduction and internal fixation by various methods. Static and dynamic strength measurements were obtained from the elbow extensors of twenty-nine patients from these two groups. In the over-all series, the ratings for pain, function, range of motion, elbow stability, and incidence of degenerative joint changes were similar for each group. However, thirteen local complications occurred in the fifty-four pa

BACKGROUND: Lisfranc fracture-dislocation is an uncommon but serious injury that currently lacks universal consensus on optimal operative treatment. Two common fixation methods are open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and primary arthrodesis (PA). The objective of this study is to analyze the cost difference between ORIF and PA of Lisfranc injuries, along with the contribution of medical services to overall costs.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cost analysis of the MarketScan database from 2010 to 2020. MarketScan is an insurance and commercial claims database that integrates deiden

BACKGROUND: Type III supracondylar fractures represent a difficult injury to treat and there is no universal consensus regarding the best treatment. The purpose of this study is to assess the incidence of complication associated with open reduction and compare open reduction vs closed reduction, in order to determine which treatment lead to better clinical and radiological outcomes. Is open reduction really associated with a higher number of iatrogenic complication and worse clinical outcomes in comparison to closed reduction?
METHODS: A total of 55 patients, affected by type III supracondyla

A sialocele is a subcutaneous cavity containing saliva, most often caused by facial trauma or iatrogenic complications. In subcondylar fractures, most surgeons are conscious of facial nerve injury; however, they usually pay little attention to the parotid duct injury. We report the case of a 41-year-old man with a sialocele, approximately 5×3 cm in size, which developed 1 week after subcondylar fracture reduction. The sialocele became progressively enlarged despite conservative management. Computed tomography showed a thin-walled cyst between the body and tail of the parotid gland. Fluid leaka

The management of bicondylar tibial plateau fractures is challenging. A lateral locking plate offers an alternative method to traditional dual plating to avoid further stripping of soft tissue. Nevertheless, the rate of malreduction and fixation loss remains high. From 2007 to 2009, we performed open reduction and fixation with unilateral locked plating to directly reduce the fracture in 15 patients with bicondylar plateau fracture. The average follow-up duration was 16.2 months (range: 12-30 months), and the average age of the patients was 43 years (range: 19-64 years). All fractures were Ort

A case of traumatic fracture-dislocation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint is reported. This type of injury is extremely rare. The injury was associated with complete disruption of the following anatomic structures: conjoined tendon of abductor hallucis and medial head of flexor hallucis brevis, plantar plate, and the intersesamoid ligament. Additionally, there was a transverse fracture of the tibial sesamoid. Excision of the fractured tibial sesamoid trapped within the joint and primary repair was achieved through a medial incisional approach. A complete description of the repair and rat
