Optical and video stylets for airway management: an expert review.

INTRODUCTION: Optical and video stylets are increasingly important airway management devices that combine real-time visualization with a slim rigid or semi-rigid design. They facilitate tracheal intubation in anatomically constrained airways while minimizing cervical spine movement and mouth-opening requirements. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review examines the evolution, technical principles, classification, clinical applications, safety profile, and future developments of optical and video stylets. A structured literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was condu

Enhancement of the conversion efficiency of optical spin-orbit interactions in PT symmetric systems.

The optical spin-orbit interaction (SOI) caused by momentum-dependent Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PB) provides new opportunities in the development of spin-optical devices, but the relatively low conversion efficiency limits its application. Here, through rigorous full-wave analyses on it in a parity-time (PT) symmetric system with thickness less than a wavelength, we find that the conversion efficiency of the SOI can be enhanced in both transmission and reflection in a wide range of incidence angles. When the parameters of the PT symmetric system meet the requirement of coherent perfect absorbe…

Optical methods for cuffless blood pressure measurements.

SIGNIFICANCE: Accurate, noninvasive, and continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring without a cuff is a long-standing goal in biomedical engineering, having the potential to revolutionize hypertension care. Significant effort has gone toward the development of an optical cuffless BP device, primarily using the finger photoplethysmography (PPG) signal. Despite this effort, optical-based BP monitors have yet to achieve widespread adoption primarily due to accuracy concerns. Recently, new optical techniques such as multiwavelength PPG, imaging PPG, and speckle contrast optical spectroscopy/speckle

Dynamically Tunable Exciton-Photon Coupling via Multi-Physics Field in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Microcavities.

Atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host tightly bound excitons with large oscillator strengths, making them ideal for studying light-matter interactions and polaritonic devices. When integrated with optical microcavities, TMD monolayers and van der Waals heterostructures enable engineering of the local density of optical states (LDOS), giving rise to Purcell-enhanced emission in the weak coupling regime and exciton-polaritons in the strong coupling regime. Practical polariton devices require dynamic, reversible control of exciton-photon detuning and coupling strength, as t

Enhanced performance of quantum cascade lasers through active region optimization and large optical cavity engineering.

This paper presents a comprehensive study of mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) designed with optimized active region geometries and large optical cavity (LOC) structures to achieve enhanced performance. The devices were fabricated using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and characterized in terms of electro-optical, spectral, and far-field properties. The introduction of LOC architectures significantly reduced waveguide losses, improved optical confinement, and enhanced beam collimation. Devices with 50 active region stages and LOC design (QCL#3_LOC) exhibited the lowest waveguide losses (

Rewritable, Stable, and Precise Optical Printing on Organohydrogel via Confining Dynamic Covalent Bond Exchange Between Crystalline Microdomains.

Optical printing on soft materials offers significant advantages for spatiotemporally controlled patterning in adaptive optics, information encryption, and reconfigurable devices. However, current strategies face challenges in achieving precise and rewritable pattern control with long-term stability due to uncontrolled diffusion kinetics of reactive species and structural instability upon stimulus removal. Here, we design a crystal-restricted dynamic organohydrogel that achieves precise optical patterning via confining dynamic covalent bond exchange between crystalline microdomains. These micr

Investigation of lead-free double perovskite Cs₂CeAgCl₆ for resistive switching and optoelectronic applications.

Lead halide perovskites are widely used in optoelectronic applications but are toxic due to their lead content. To explore viable, lead-free alternatives, we investigate the properties of Cs2CeAgCl6, a double perovskite halide, for its potential use in resistive switching and optoelectronic devices. Using the WIEN2K code, we computed the structural, elastic, electrical, and optical properties of this compound. Our analysis reveals that Cs2CeAgCl6 is mechanically stable and ductile, with favorable mechanical properties. The electronic band structure was calculated using the GGA + U approximatio

Synthesis of Metal Chalcogenide Semiconductors by Thermal Decomposition of Organosulfur and Organoselenium Compounds.

Metal chalcogenides - because of their excellent optical and electrical properties - are important semiconductor materials for optical devices, such as solar cells, sensors, and photocatalysts. The challenges associated with metal chalcogenides are the complexity of the conventional synthesis methods and the stringent synthesis conditions. In this study, the synthesis conditions were simplified in a solvent-free synthesis method using cadmium precursor, thiourea and selenium to synthesize metal chalcogenides, such as CdS and CdSe, which have particularly suitable band gaps for the optical devi…

Merging van der Waals Materials and Optical Metasurfaces for Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics.

Flat optical metasurfaces are transforming photonics research by enabling new ways to control light in ultrathin, versatile photonic devices. The rise of quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBIC) metasurfaces has enabled tailored high-quality (Q) factor resonances in subwavelength nanostructured thin films, analogous to traditional optical cavities. In this perspective, we explore the emergence of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) in optical qBIC metasurfaces, specifically those constructed from van der Waals (vdW) layered materials. Because of their remarkable properties, vdW metasurfaces

Breaking the Fixed Output: Harnessing Photonic Reabsorption and Photothermal Effects for Tunable NIR Waveguiding in a Flexible Organic Crystal.

Flexible organic crystals have emerged as promising materials for integrated photonic devices and optical communication systems. However, the output wavelength and intensity of optical signals are typically fixed by the intrinsic molecular structures and crystal packing modes, rendering continuous and reversible modulation of a sole crystal highly challenging. Herein, we design and synthesize a near-infrared flexible organic crystal, in which dual-mode waveguide output modulation of wavelength and intensity is achieved by synergistically exploiting photonic re-absorption and photothermal-drive

Fast light generation through velocity manipulation in two vertically-stacked ring resonators.

Speed manipulation of optical pulses is a very attractive research challenge enabling next-generation high-capacity all-optical communication networks. Pulses can be effectively slowed by using different integrated optical structures such as coupled-resonator waveguiding structures or photonic crystal cavities. Fast light generation by means of integrated photonic devices is currently a quite unexplored research field in spite of its crucial importance for all-optical pulse processing. In this paper, we report on the first theoretical demonstration of fast light generation in an ultra-compact

Liquid crystal cells with built-in CdSe nanotubes for chromogenic smart emission devices.

A simple and general approach for controlling optical anisotropy of nanostructured semiconductors is reported. Our design involves the fabrication of liquid crystal devices with built-in semiconductor nanotubes. Quite interestingly, it is found that semiconductor nanotubes can be well aligned along the orientation of liquid crystals molecules automatically, resulting in a very large emission anisotropy with the degree of polarization up to 72%. This intriguing result manifests a way to obtain well aligned semiconductor nanotubes and the emission anisotropy can be easily manipulated by an exter

Release-free electro-optomechanical crystal modulator.

Electro-optic modulation is central to classical optical communications and emerging quantum technologies. High-confinement optomechanical crystal modulators enable microwave-optical transduction through strong optomechanical interactions and offer a promising interface between superconducting qubits and optical fibers. However, their performance is limited by thermal noise from optical absorption. Release-free optomechanical crystals provide improved thermal anchoring but have not yet been integrated into a microwave-optical transducer. Here, we demonstrate a release-free electro-optomechanic

Superplastic Nanomolding of Aluminum Waveguides for Subwavelength Light Routing, Splitting, and Encryption.

Plasmonic nanowires (NWs) due to their polarization-dependent optics and enhanced light-matter interactions have presented vibrant capabilities in functional nanophotonic devices. However, current demonstrations have largely been based on chemically synthesized Ag NWs, which are extremely unstable and poorly functional. Here we show single-crystalline Al NWs can be fabricated by a superplastic nanomolding (SPNM) technique on a centimeter scale, which are earth-abundant and highly stable. They present robust properties of multimode waveguiding with long-term stability, high efficiency of beam s
