Orthopedic problems in athletes.

Physicians and patients must recognize the demands of the sport involved, as well as the individual's ability to meet those demands. Careful analysis of the sport and examination of the patient to assess recovery and chances of reinjury are mandatory, if he is to enjoy sports after injury. Physicians should become familiar with padding, shoes, warm-up programs, preparticipation examinations, and protective equipment and devices, all of which are helpful in preventing sports injuries. We have touched only briefly on the epidemic problem of quality of life trauma that is part of our society. Bec

Orthopedic complications of dwarfism.

Of 248 dwarfs with Achondroplasia, Pseudoachondroplastic dysplasia, Metaphyseal chondrodysplasia. Diastrophic dwarfism, Morquio syndrome, and Spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia Congenita, 85 were managed by orthopedic methods. Experience with bracing is generally unsatisfactory. Surgical lengthening of the lower extremities is not recommended. A number of other surgical procedures are advisable in selected cases.

[Modern morphological concepts of periprosthetic joint infection in traumatology and orthopedics].

With the increase in the number of orthopedic surgeries, such as knee and hip replacement, the risk of peri-implant infection also increases. According to various registries, the number of such interventions continues to grow, making the problem of infections particularly relevant. Morphological assessment of peri-implant tissues, primarily the peri-implant membrane, has become routine practice and is used as one of the diagnostic criteria for infection. This review summarizes the main morphological changes in the peri-implant membrane formed at the bone/implant interface, presents the pathoge

[Osteoporosis and inflammation : A surgical challenge in orthopedics and trauma surgery].

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of patients with osteoporosis and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) presents a challenge. Osteoporosis, characterized by reduced bone mass and quality, and inflammatory diseases are common causes of fractures by increasing the risk of bone loss. OSTEOIMMUNOLOGY: In recent years, the field of osteoimmunology -which studies the interactions between the immune system and bone metabolism-has gained importance, addressing overlaps between conditions that are often considered separately Diagnosis, risk assessment, and therapeutic approaches must

Platelet rich plasma applications in orthopedics: A review of recent advances.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has gained prominence in orthopedics as a regenerative approach that utilizes autologous platelets enriched with growth factors to facilitate tissue healing. Innovations such as protein-enriched filtered PRP and the integration of PRP with biomaterials, including 3D-printed scaffolds and bioactive molecules like kartogenin, have been developed to enhance outcomes in cartilage and bone repair. Clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of PRP in managing conditions such as knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tendinopathy, and lateral epicondylitis, often sh…

Progress in Prevention and Treatment of Acute Bone Loss in Orthopedics.

Orthopedic patients need to perform limb immobilization for several days to several weeks due to fracture or other special circumstances. When the function of a certain part or the whole body is restricted, the activity of osteoclasts will be enhanced and its life activity will surpass that of osteoblasts, so local or even whole body bone loss will occur. Acute bone loss usually occurs within a few weeks after the immobilization of limbs. At this stage, the patient's bone mass will decrease sharply, and the patient is prone to osteoporotic refracture. After that, the bone mass will gradually r

Hot Topics in the Multicenter Orthopedics Outcomes Network: Anterior Cruciate Ligament.

Since 2015, the Multicenter Orthopedic Outcomes Network (MOON) has addressed several factors associated with patient outcome after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. These factors include predictors of high grade knee laxity, the impact of meniscus treatment on joint space narrowing after surgery, graft selection, treating diabetic patients, predictors of clinically significant pain, and outcomes of patients where meniscus tears were left in situ without treatment. The presence of meniscus tears and generalized laxity predict a lax examination under anesthesia prior to surgery. Allograft

Two cases of macrodactyly of the foot: relevance in pediatric orthopedics.

Congenital enlargement of one or several digits of the foot, known as macrodactyly, is a rare malformation. Macrodactyly impedes foot development and affects function and gait. Here, we describe a surgical technique used to correct macrodactyly in two pediatric patients. We performed amputation of the enlarged phalanx and debulking of the soft tissues to construct a normal-sized digit. This precise technique involves a simple surgical plan that preserves the metatarsus and cuneiform and does not result in a wide plantapedis. Both patients subsequently showed improved gait and were able to wear

[One hundred years of orthopedics in the Netherlands. IV. Spinal abnormalities].

In recent years there has been spectacular progress in the approach to various disorders of the spinal column. Owing to improved methods of osteosynthesis there is no longer so much need for long periods of postoperative bed rest. Of all the scolioses, idiopathic scoliosis is most common. The vast majority of these cases are not clinically significant. What is seen in the remaining cases if left untreated is a progression in the curvature during growth. Progressive idiopathic scoliosis can be effectively treated using conservative methods. Screening at school is an important part of this proce

[Current role of ultrasonography in orthopedics. Results of a nationwide survey].

The purpose of this study was to determine the current position of diagnostic ultrasound imaging in the day to day orthopaedic practice. A questionnaire was sent to all the 387 conservative and operative orthopaedic hospitals and orthopaedic university departments in Germany. 167 of these hospitals completed the forms and provided the basis for this evaluation (response rate 43.2%). Screening of the fetal hip for CDH was by far the most common indication, the shoulder was ranking second, the knee and the hip joint in children and adults rank third and fourth. Other frequent indications were in

[The status of the direct magnifying x-ray technique in orthopedics].

22 patients suffering from different orthopaedic disease patterns were x-rayed with direct x-ray magnification with focus diameters between 0.012 and 0.100 mm. This yielded improved resolution of detail structures, especially in tumours and aseptic bone necroses. Due to the relatively low efficiency of the x-ray tube (conditioned by the physics of the x-ray equipment), however, exposure times of several seconds were required, and the voltage had to be higher than in conventional x-ray procedure. This resulted in lack of sharpness due to movement and to a loss in contrast. Hence, the clinical u

Oral orthopedics and movement of maxillary segments. A roentgen stereophotogrammetric study.

An infant with a complete unilateral cleft of the lip and palate underwent maxillary expansion treatment using an oral orthopedic appliance. Movement of the maxillary bone segments was studied by means of metallic implants and roentgen stereophotogrammetry, and intra-oral changes were recorded by measuring transverse dimensions on casts. Expansion treatment had almost no influence on the positions of the maxillary segments, and movements of the segments showed little agreement with measures on casts. The findings suggest that the appropriate use of the term oral orthopedics and the evaluation …
