Osteolysis of the skull is fairly common. The clinical presentation and results of laboratory or imaging tests may suggest a benign or a malignant disease. The purpose of this study was to report the prevalence of osteolysis and loss of fixation using Metasul metal-on-metal articulation couples. Ninety-two patients with 96 hips with Metasul articulation couples were followed for 5 to 11 years. By patient self-assessment, 89 (93%) patients scored themselves as good or excellent. 5 elderly women developed pubic osteolysis after spontaneous fracture of the pubic bone. Radiographs showed gradual progression of the osteolysis, followed by callus formation, and bone union after 4-5 months. Bone mineral density was low in all patients. White blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein were normal. Urine deoxypyridinoline was high, but serum osteocalcin normal. Elderly women with spontaneous fractures and osteolysis of the pubic bone should be considered for evaluation of osteoporosis and treatment.

Alumina-on-alumina bearings in total hip replacement have been used for 30 years. Excellent tribologic properties and extra low debris generation could, in theory, provide an answer to osteolysis. A review of the authors' experience with alumina-on-alumina bearings showed that, except in a few bearings that had been loose for a long time, osteolysis was not a problem. Eighty-six osteolytic lesions of the rib cage were examined by means of conventional radiography and ultrasonography. The ultrasonographic criteria of osteolysis are described. Only 1 rib metastasis was missed by ultrasonography while 13 lesions were not detected by x-ray film. Of 63 ultrasonographically guided biopsies, 62 resulted in the final diagnosis; complications were not observed. Idiopathic multicentric acro-osteolysis is a complex heterogenic disease that may simulate mycetoma. A ten-year-old child has developed the condition, diagnosed as mycetoma for 7 years. Medical genetic examination of the patient helped correctly diagnose the disease. Proband's younger brother suffered from the same condition. A case of carpal tunnel syndrome with skin ulcerations and osteolysis is reported. Such cases are unusual. There was a sensory and motor deficit with chronic ulcerations on the palmar surface of the third phalanx of the medius. The distal phalanx of the forefinger had been lost due to osteolysis. Surgical treatment is said to be followed by a healing of the ulcerations.

The report concerns a description of a case of hereditary acroosteolysis with peculiar clinical and X-ray symptoms. It is being stressed that the neurological changes in different cases differ by their manifold signs and are sometimes the prevalent syndrome. The authors conducted a genetical analysis of 11 cases of hereditary acroosteolysis, which were seen in Dagestan. The paper contains some considerations of the differencies of hereditary acroosteolysis from other similar disorders.
