Autosomal dominant osteopetrosis: an otoneurological investigation of the two radiological types.

Otoneurological examination was performed on 14 patients with autosomal dominant osteopetrosis. Eight patients had radiological type I osteopetrosis, characterized by a pronounced osteosclerosis of the skull and an enlarged thickness of the cranial vault. Six patients had type II, in which osteosclerosis is most pronounced at the base of the skull. All investigated patients except one had otoneurological manifestations, but only two of of the 14 had otoneurological complaints. Symptoms were related to radiological types. Involvement of the trigeminal nerve was seen only in type I, whereas invo…

Heterogeneity and high prevalence of bone manifestations, and bone mineral density in congenital generalized lipodystrophy subtypes 1 and 2.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital Generalized Lipodystrophy (CGL) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in genes responsible for … athyroid hormone and 25-OH-vitamin D were 23 pg/mL (7-75) and 28 ng/mL (18-43). Osteolytic lesions, osteosclerosis and pseudo-osteopoikylosis, were present in 74%, 42% and 32% of patients, respectively. Lytic lesions were found predominantly in the extremities of long bones, bilaterally and symmetrically, spine was spared. Osteosclerosis was present in axial and …

The usefulness of different imaging modalities in mandibular osteonecrosis and osteomyelitis diagnosis.

To examine the CT-imaging features of subjects with bacterial osteomyelitis (OM), osteoradionecrosis (ORN), and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) with histopathological confirmation, and to examine the diagnostic efficacy of panoramic radiography and MRI in detecting these disease features. 150 cases with preoperative CT data were selected: 61 bacterial OM, 19 ORN, and 70 MRONJ. 143 cases underwent panoramic X-ray examination, and 47 underwent MRI. The assessment criteria for imaging findings included: (1) bone resorption, (2) osteosclerosis, (3) clarity of the mandibular can…

Proteinase-activated receptor 2 modulates OA-related pain, cartilage and bone pathology.

OBJECTIVE: Proteinase-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) deficiency protects against cartilage degradation in experimental osteoarthritis (OA). The … a surrogate of OA-related pain. RESULTS: Osteophytes formed within 7 days post-DMM in WT mice but osteosclerosis was only evident from 14 days post induction. Importantly, PAR2 was expressed in the proliferative/hypertrophic chondrocytes present within osteophytes. In PAR2-/- mice, osteophytes developed significantly less frequently but, when present, were sma …

An increased bone mineral density is an adverse prognostic factor in patients with systemic mastocytosis.

PURPOSE: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is characterized by the expansion of clonal mast cells that infiltrate various organ systems. The extent of organ infiltration and subsequent organ damage distinguishes between indolent SM (ISM) defined by a nearly normal life expectancy and advanced SM (AdvSM) defined by poor prognosis. In ISM, measurement of the bone mineral density (BMD) frequently reveals osteoporosis. In contrast, the clinical implication of an increased BMD and osteosclerosis remains unclear. METHODS: BMD was evaluated in 61 patients with mastocytosis (ISM, n = 29, 48%; AdvSM, n = 32,…

Skeletal Fluorosis Due to Fluorocarbon Inhalation from an Air Dust Cleaner.

Skeletal fluorosis (SF) is an osteosclerotic metabolic bone disorder caused by excessive ingestion or inhalation of fluoride. SF is extremely rare in developed countries. We report a case of SF due to inhalational abuse from a fluoride-containing air dust cleaner. A 33-year-old man with no past medical history presented with progressively worsening low back pain for 2 years. Physical examination was notable for loss of lumbar lordosis and tenderness over the lumbar spine. Radiographs were notable for uniform generalized osteosclerosis in the long bones, entire spine, rib cage, and pelvic bones…

A case of SAPHO (synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteomyelitis) syndrome in which [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography was useful for differentiating from multiple metastatic bone tumors.

We report the case of a 50-year-old Japanese woman with SAPHO (synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteomyelitis) syndrome. Radiographs showed osteosclerosis of the cervical and lumbar vertebrae, as well as osteosclerosis and osteolysis of the right femoral neck, resembling multiple metastatic bony lesions. Arriving at a diagnosis required hematological and imaging tests. Whole-body bone scintigraphy identified diffuse uptake from the lower cervical vertebrae to the lumbar vertebrae and marked uptake in the right femoral neck. However, with [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomogr…

Seronegative and seropositive rheumatoid arthritis: radiographic differences.

Patients with seronegative and patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have clinical, genetic, and immunologic differences. This study was undertaken to determine whether the two populations differ radiologically. Seventeen patients with seronegative RA were closely matched with seropositive control subjects. Radiographs of the hands and wrists were studied blindly, and disease severity was quantified with use of a modification of the Beaver Creek grading sheet. The following distinguishing features were also evaluated: osteosclerosis, new bone formation, carpal predominance, anky…

Qualitative radiographic characteristics of MRONJ-affected bone in oral and parenteral drug administration: comparison of panoramic radiography and cone-beam CT.

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to compare the capacity of panoramic radiography (PR) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) first for the detection of bone affected by medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) using qualitative radiographic parameters; and second for the evaluation of the relationship between drug administration route and associated bone changes. METHODS: PR and CBCT images of 24 MRONJ patients using oral or intravenous (IV) bisphosphonates were scored for the detection of osteolysis, osteosclerosis, lamina dura thickening, periodontal ligament widening, persistent extrac…

A multicenter study of CT findings in medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is currently classified only by clinical staging, with no imaging-based qualitative classificati … re analyzed for the presence of osteolysis, sequestrum separation, periosteal reactions, mixed-type osteosclerosis, and the bone-within-bone appearance. Clinical factors associated with each finding were also examined. Osteolysis appeared as localized in 55.1% of cases, extended in 27.7%, and advanced in 13.8%. In contrast, 3.4% of patients showed no osteolysis. …

Increased bone mineral content in young adults with familial hypophosphatemic vitamin D refractory rickets.

Seven adults with familial hypophosphatemia have been investigated by histologic and radiographic examination of bone, and estimates of bone mineral status by in vivo neutron activation analysis (IVNAA). Histological examination showed severe osteomalacia and osteosclerosis in all cases. Radiography showed skeletal deformities and other sequelae of severe rickets of childhood in five of the seven cases, with, in addition, thickened well-mineralized bones; the other two showed normal radiographs. IVNAA measurements showed that the first five had greater than normal bone calcium and that the oth…
