Tinnitus may be continuous or pulsatile. Vascular lesions are the most frequent radiologically demonstrable cause of pulsatile tinnitus. These include congenital vascular anomalies (which may be arterial or venous), vascular tumours, and a variety of acquired vasculopathies. The choice of imaging depends on the clinical findings. If a mass is present at otoscopy, thin-section computed tomography (CT) is indicated. In the otoscopically normal patient, there is a range of possible imaging approaches. However, combined CT angiography and venography is particularly useful.

A 54-year-old male farmer residing in Chunchon, Korea, complaining of blood tinged discharge and tinnitus in the left ear for two days, was examined in August 16, 1996. Otoscopic examination revealed live maggots from the ear canal. The patient did not complain of any symptoms after removal of maggots. Five maggots recovered were identified as the third stage larvae of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). This is the first record of aural myiasis in Korea.

In this article the authors address the dilemma confronting school nurses in determining whether or not to counsel parents about seeking medical care for a child with a sore throat. The use of a clinical scorecard in the school setting as an aid in predicting streptococcal pharyngitis is investigated. The authors conclude that the only valid solution to the dilemma is the availability of the throat culture to schools. Using the culture as an additional assessment tool augments those already proven over time--the stethoscope, scoliosis and vision screening, and the otoscope.

Digital video-otoscopy (DVO) is one of the modern high-tech methods for otiatric diagnostics that allows to enlarge the image of the area being examined, i.e. the otoscopic picture. DVO has been shown to facilitate the objective dynamic observation of the clinical course of the disease by means of photo- and videodocumentation of he changes in the tympanic membrane and other otoscopicstructures. The DVO technique makes it possible to substantially improve the quality of diagnostics, detect the middle ear conditions at the early stagesof their alteration, and choose the optimal strategy for the

Hearing impairment and otologic problems have been reported to be prevalent among individuals with Down syndrome. This study was designed to determine whether children with Down syndrome have a higher prevalence of auditory abnormalities than do children with other forms of mental retardation. Hearing, impedance, and otoscopic examinations were performed on 30 children with Down syndrome and 30 children without Down syndrome matched for CA and IQ. Results indicated that the children with Down syndrome had a significantly higher prevalence of hearing impairment and otologic disorders.

During the placement of a mould for a hearing-aid by a hearing-aid dispenser, moulding material entered the middle ear through pre-existent perforations in the tympanic membrane in both ears. Besides hearing loss, there were no other symptoms. Surgical removal of the moulding material by tympanotomy was necessary, and was complicated by encirclement of the ossicles by the material. All the material could be removed and the hearing was saved. Recommendations for an improved procedure of mould-making are made including more detailed information of the otoscopic findings at the prescriptions for

We report the case of a 29 year-old woman who complained of pulsatile tinnitus and impaired hearing. On otoscopic examination, her right tympanic membrane was observed to be in contact with a mass in the middle ear cavity, with the formation of a meniscus at the point of contact. Using a high-sensitivity microphone inserted into the external auditory canal, we recorded pulsatile tinnitus that was synchronous with the electrocardiogram. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed that the middle ear mass was an aberrant internal carotid artery coursing through the hypotympanum.

The practicability of the bioactive glass ceramic Ceravital in ear surgery was tested in animals. The histological findings are presented. Over the last 3 years implants of bioactive glass ceramic were used in humans. Prostheses for the total or partial reconstruction of the ossicular chain and the reconstruction of the bony wall of the outer ear canal were fashioned. We have conducted about 300 tympanoplasties and 60 total or partial reconstructions of the bony wall of the outer ear canal. The otoscopic and functional results were satisfactory.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of, and patient characteristics associated with, the presence of a pediatric nasal foreign body when one is reported but none is visible on simple exam.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients presenting to a tertiary pediatric emergency department from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2023 with a chief concern of nasal foreign body. We excluded patients for whom a foreign body was readily visible by direct visualization or with the aid of an otoscope. This left our population of interest: pediatric p

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate often develop middle ear ventilation disorders due to chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction. This may lead to hearing loss. The insertion of ventilation tubes is a widely accepted measure to avoid sequelae of middle ear ventilation disorders and hearing loss. On the other hand, long-term therapy with ventilation tubes may inflict iatrogenic complications. The objective of the study was the evaluation of otoscopic and audiometric long-term findings in adult cleft patients who had been treated with ventilation tubes since childhood when chronic otitis media w

A 1-year-10-month-old child developed left-sided Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) without vesicles 1 month after an episode of varicella zoster infection. No ear symptoms, including hearing loss, tinnitus, or imbalance, were reported. The external ear and otoscopic examinations were unremarkable. He achieved adequate recovery with corticosteroid treatment. This case report discusses the unusual presentation of RHS without vesicles, the diagnostic dilemma in young children, varicella zoster virus hepatitis, treatment modalities, and the role of vaccination in its prevention.

The introduction of antibiotics has decreased the number of acute mastoiditis as complication of otitis media in children. However, this pathology still is a serious infection. Its incidence has increased in the last years and goes on getting diagnostic and therapeutic problems. We are reporting an own review about 18 children diagnosed as acute otomastoiditis, hospitalized in a 10 years period, with ages between 10 months and 14 years. We have analysed different parameters standing out the otoscopic and radiologic findings, clinical symptoms, previous antibiotic treatment, type of surgical in

The specific features of the diagnosis and therapy of the dry form of atypical mastoiditis are discussed. Of great diagnostic importance were local changes in the mastoid area, otoscopic signs in the posterior-superior tympanic membrane and bone compartment of the auditory meatus, hearing impairment, thermographic signs of purulent-destructive lesions in the antrum and other cells of the mastoid process, and X-ray symptoms of bone destruction of the mastoid process. It is obvious that the clinical picture and development of atypical mastoiditis are closely related to the age and reactivity of

Otitis media with effusion is the leading cause of hearing loss in children. The pathogenesis of this disease process continues to be controversial. Diagnosis requires precise otoscopic evaluation coupled with audiometric investigation. Therapy has traditionally included medical and surgical regimens. Recent findings indicate that some basic changes may be required in both these therapeutic avenues. Aggressive therapeutic intervention may be required in patients presenting with complications of otitis media with effusion. Available information strongly indicates that a more intensified researc
