We present two cases of transient lingual nerve injury that were associated with the use of a laryngeal mask airway Supreme™ (The Laryngeal Mask Company, Singapore) during lumbar discectomy in a 43-year-old female and i-gel™ (Intersurgical, Berkshire, UK) during ovum pick up in a 33-year-old female. They presented with numbness at the tip of their tongues and spontaneously and fully recovered 2 weeks after their operations.

Nutritional therapy is essential for a normal reproductive outcome in phenylketonuric women. In homocystinuria, fetal outcome is good in women whose disorder is responsive to vitamin B6 therapy and is poor in women whose disorder is unresponsive to therapy. Pregnancy in galactosemia is rare because of the almost universal ovarian dysfunction present in female patients with this disorder. Transplantation of the fertilized ovum is a promising possibility for these women. In women with MSUD, there has been only one case of pregnancy reported to date.

This gestational neoplasm arises from the trophoblast, the ectodermal layer of a fertilized ovum. Although benign, hydatidiform moles have the potential to progress to malignant trophoblastic disease. Molar pregnancy must be recognized promptly. The clinical presentation is usually vaginal bleeding, which may contain characteristic tissues. Diagnosis is confirmed by identification of hydropic avascular villi obtained by evacuation of uterine contents. The beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin is a valuable tumor marker.

A case of primary endodermal sinus tumor (EST) of the endometrium in a 28-year-old woman is described. EST has been reported to arise in several extragonadal sites, but to the authors' knowledge this is the first documented instance of origin in the endometrium. The histologic study is verified by the detection of alpha-fetoprotein in the tumor by an immunoperoxidase-peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique reported here. Displaced germinal cells, abnormal ovum, and residual fetal tissues are considered as possible origins of the neoplasia.

A retrospective study of 83 patients with pathologically documented tubal ectopic pregnancy demonstrated a statistically significant association (P less than 0.005) between prior spontaneous abortion and ectopic pregnancy. In this population with a low incidence of chronic salpingitis, it is suggested that delayed (post-midcycle) ovulation, causing preovulatory over-ripeness of the ovum, may be the common underlying etiologic factor. The clinical significance of this finding is also briefly discussed.

Abortuses from women conceiving within six months of discontinuing oral contraceptives show a striking increase in triploidy. This anomaly could be the result of temporary hormonal imbalance in the woman. Such an imbalance might affect cell division in the ovum. For this reason, we tested nine hormones to see if they influenced cell division in lymphocyte cultures. Using this system, we found no evidence of an increase in polyploid (tetraploid) cells in culture.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is usually an iatrogenic complication in women taking ovulation induction medications during assisted reproduction. We hereby report the case of a 25 years old female who presented with hypertension, polyserositis with tense ascites and large cystic ovaries. She developed sigmoid and transverse sinus thrombosis. She had undergone a clandestine ovulation induction therapy as a commercial ovum donor. She fitted in severe category of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) remains the most effective method for severe male infertility patients to obtain their genetic offspring. A viable spermatozoon is the prerequisite for initiating fertilization in ICSI. Motility is the primary sign of sperm viability. However, how to select immotile but viable spermatozoa for ICSI on the day of ovum pick-up is critical for ICSI. This review focuses on the techniques for the identification and selection of immotile but viable spermatozoa for assisted reproductive technology.

Ectopic pregnancy is defined as dislocation of a fertilized ovum anywhere other than in the cavity of uterus. Generally, the common site for dislocation is within fallopian tube, accounting for 95.5% of all ectopic gestations. Abdominal pregnancy is rare with a potentially life-threatening variation that resides within peritoneal cavity and the primary splenic pregnancy is even rarer. This report describes a patient with primary splenic pregnancy, who was successfully managed after splenectomy.

This report reviews four cases with vaginal bleeding and early ultrasound diagnosis of abnormal pregnancy before nine weeks gestation, who were followed by serial ultrasound examinations and subsequently diagnosed as hydatidiform mole. The findings support the view that hydatidiform mole may arise from a blighted ovum. It is concluded that vaginal bleeding in the first trimester should be investigated by diagnostic ultrasound, and the pregnancy by terminated if an abnormal development has been confirmed.

A single triploid individual (3n = 75) of the Calfornia roach, Hesperoleucus symmetricus, was identified among a sample of nine specimens from the Russian River, California. The diploid number of H. symmetricus, as revealed by the karyotypes of the remaining eight specimens, is 50. Aside from the all-female triploid unisexual fishes, this is the first report of a triploid fish from the wild, and the second report of a triploid in a bisexual fish species. The most likely origin of the triploid was probably fusion of a haploid sperm with an unreduced ovum.
