Teratomas are benign tumors containing cells from ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal layers. They occur in about 1 in every 4000 births and most commonly in the sacrococcygeal region, followed by the ovaries. Congenital epignathus teratomas are rare embryological neoplasms localised in the region of head and neck. An epignathus is found in approximately 1:35,000 to 1:200,000 live births. This accounts for 2-9% of all teratomas. Size and location of the neoplasm in the oronasopharynx is variable. Teratomas are partly undiagnosed at the time of birth. They may exist with an intracranial exten

The pretreatment relationship of tumor burden to speech and swallowing function in 230 patients with oral or oropharyngeal cancer before surgery was assessed. Reduced articulation, reduced conversational understandability, or self-reported dysphagia were present in at least 34% of patients before treatment. Videofluoroscopy showed at least 9% of patients had reduced swallowing efficiency on liquid, paste, or cookie boluses. By use of regression techniques, the percentages of the oral tongue and of the anterior floor of mouth affected by neoplasm were found to be significantly related to reduce

Pleomorphic adenomas (PA) are the most prevalent benign salivary gland neoplasms. They may occur at any age, with a peak incidence between 40 and 60 years of age. They are more commonly observed in females (60%). These tumors can arise in both the major and minor salivary glands. Approximately 80% of these tumors are diagnosed in the parotid gland, whereas 10% arise in the minor salivary glands, mainly affecting the palates, followed by the lips and cheeks. This report describes two cases of unusual lesions that were diagnosed as (PA) in the minor salivary glands in our department via a review

Oral malignant melanoma is a rare aggressive neoplasm of melanocytic origin, usually found on the hard palate and gingiva, and representing 0.2-8% of all melanomas. Unfortunately, oral mucosal melanomas have by far the worst prognosis, and therefore early detection is indispensable for improving their prognosis. Histopathological examination of any pigmented lesion is essential to rule out this lethal entity. Computed tomography is of help for assessing both the extent of the lesion and the presence of regional metastasis to the lymph nodes. Malignant melanoma cells stain positively with antib

Maxillary cancers include neoplasms arising in both maxillary sinus and oral cavity (upper alveolar ridge, hard palate) according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer. Although it is universally accepted that the combination of surgery and radiotherapy seems to be the treatment of choice, there is no accordance about the treatment of clinically negative neck. We retrospectively analyzed 20 patients with maxillary sinus cancer and 37 with an upper alveolar ridge or hard palate cancer, evaluating the incidence of N-disease and the recurrence at local site. On the basis of our findings, we c

CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman was referred to our department due to an apparent indolent anterior blepharitis with an indurated node in her right upper eyelid, which had persisted for months. It was believed to be a chalazion associated with an ipsilateral swollen pre-aurical lymph node, which had not responded to conventional treatment. The extemporaneous biopsy was reported as sebaceous carcinoma. Complete exeresis was performed on that eyelid and it was reconstructed with a palate mucosa graft and a glabelar flap. A radical neck dissection was performed later, in order to remove the lymp

BACKGROUND: Germline mutations in E-cadherin (CDH1) gene are associated with autosomal-dominantly inherited cancer syndrome characterized by diffuse gastric cancer, lobular breast cancer, and in some families, cleft lip/palate. However, there may be generations in which these neoplasms do not occur at all in a family and later on, one or another carcinoma arises, which makes it difficult for physicians to think about hereditary origin.
METHODS: We report the first Mexican family with CDH1 mutation (variant c.377del).
RESULTS: An asymptomatic young woman underwent a search for mutations in su

We describe a case of a rare soft-palatal and parapharyngeal mass in an adult woman. A 71-year-old female presented with a huge mass protruding from the soft palate, complaining about difficulty in swallowing for the past 4 months. After inspection and ear nose and throat fibroscopy, in which the mass appeared regular-shaped and with a regular mucosa, the patient underwent a CT scan and MRI examination. The CT scan showed an oval, not-infiltrating, hypodense mass including a discrete irregular-shaped central calcification, while the MRI examination confirmed the non-infiltrating growth and sho

OBJECTIVE: The juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign neoplasm that affects mostly young males. Preoperative embolisation is an accepted treatment to reduce perioperative bleeding, however, severe complications may accompany these invasive procedures.
CASE REPORT: One 14-year-old JNA patient with severe epistaxis was transferred to us for treatment. Unfortunately, a left middle cerebral artery infarction occurred during the embolisation procedure. Right side hemiplegia and left eye blindness were noted. Nine months later, another course of embolisation and surgical treatment w

We present a 38-year retrospective study of 165 patients with salivary gland tumors that were diagnosed from 1971 to 2009 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Faculty of Dentistry, Mashhad, Iran. The histologic diagnoses were reevaluated according to the 2005 World Health Organization classification. A total of 165 tumors were identified in 79 male and 86 female patients. The mean age was 43.41 ± 18.59 for male patients and 40.06 ± 15.91 for female patients. Although benign salivary gland tumors are usually more common than the malignant counterpart in previous studies, neopl

A 59-year-old white male presented with symptoms of an upper respiratory infection and the sensation of nasal fullness or obstruction. There were no constitutional symptoms or history of previous oropharyngeal neoplasms. Examination revealed a fleshy tan-pink 2 cm. x 1 cm. pedunculated lesion at the base of the uvula posteriorly, extending into the posterior soft palate. Indirect laryngoscopy confirmed extension of the lesion base onto the posterior soft palate. There was no palpable cervical adenopathy. CT scan of the sinuses and neck revealed no abnormality except the soft tissue mass in the

A 46-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with history of pharyngeal discomfort for 6 months. Physical examination showed that she had facial asymmetry, loss of the left nasolabial fold, rightward de- viation of uvula, swelling of the left soft palate. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bigger neoplasm in left pa- rapharyngeal space which invaded into left lateral skull base. The left internal carotid artery, vein and the styloid process was jostled backward. The primary clinical diagnosis is pleomorphic adenoma of the parapharyngeal space.

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignancy that mainly occurs in the lung, with primary lesions in the head and neck being very rare. This neoplasm has an aggressive growth pattern, high recurrence rate, and tendency to metastasize to other sites via the lymphatics and bloodstream. The prognosis of patients with SCC is poor, as the 5-year survival is only 13%. Treatment options include surgical excision, multiple-agent chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. We report a rare case of primary SCC of the nasal cavity presenting as a lesion of the hard palate and describe its clinical, histologic, an

Adenomatoid hyperplasia of minor salivary glands in an uncommon clinicopathologic entity, first reported, in 1971, by Giansanti and cols. The condition mimics a neoplasm because of its swelling, but the histologic picture agrees with that of normal appearing salivary gland tissue. The interest of this entity is that although benign pseudotumoral lesion, it can be clinically confused with benign or malignant tumors and even, through fine needle aspiration cytology, with low grade mucoepidermoid tumors. We present one case of this condition arising in the soft palate in a patient with unilateral

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Extensive Palatal post-operative defect management following excision of neoplasm is one of the most difficult challenges for oral and maxillofacial surgeons regarding its limited surgical access and visibility on narrow area, airway management difficulty during intubation, richness of maxillary vascular network resulting in enormous bleeding risk. Decision making regarding its surgical approach and impact on speech and mastication is important. This case series aim to describe comprehensive step by step perioperative and palatal defect management approach based on
