Angiomyolipoma of the Hard Palate.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a tumor which commonly affects the kidney. Few authors have been reported AML in the oral cavity. In this clinical report, an AML of the hard palate will be presented in a 48-year-old patient. The AML contains mature adipose tissue, thick-walled blood vessels, and irregular bundle of smooth muscle. The AML is sometimes associated with tuberous sclerosis. Although the renal AMLs are often invasive, they involve regional nodes and may recur, extrarenal AMLs are commonly well demarcated, show no recurrence and may simply be removed. The AML usually behaves in a benign fash…

Myoepithelioma of the Soft Palate.

Myoepitheliomas are extremely rare salivary gland tumors. Myoepithelioma of salivary glands comprised only 1% of all salivary tumors, most commonly occurring in the parotid gland followed by the minor salivary glands in the oral cavity. Involvement of the soft palate is a rare occurrence. This tumor is usually benign, and its treatment is total lesion excision. Here, the author reports a case of myoepithelioma of the soft palate in a 42-year-old Turkish man. The mass was removed by local excision under general anesthesia. There was no recurrence during the follow-up period of 10 months.

Lymphoblastic lymphoma of the palate.

Lymphoblastic lymphomas are neoplasms of immature or precursor lymphoid cells with no or limited bone marrow involvement, whose clinical presentation varies according to the immunophenotype. While mediastinal involvement is predominant in T-lymphoblastic lymphomas, B-lymphoblastic lymphomas frequently involve nodal sites. Extranodal presentation of B-lymphoblastic lymphomas is extremely rare. We present the case of a 49-year-old man with B-lymphoblastic lymphoma of the hard palate. The patient was treated with the R-Hyper CVAD regimen and is on maintenance chemotherapy. This is the first repor…

Giant palatal schwannoma.

Schwannoma is a benign tumor that arises from nerves that contain Schwann cells. We report a case of giant schwannoma of the hard palate, which originated from the greater palatine nerve and is interesting for its large dimensions.

[A woman with an abnormality of the palate].

A 75-year-old woman was seen at the ENT department because of a bleeding tumor on the hard palate. The abnormality mimicked both clinically and histopathologically a malignant salivary gland tumor, but after excision it was diagnosed as necrotizing sialometaplasia. Clinicians should be aware of this rare and easily misdiagnosed benign disease, in order to avoid unnecessary treatment.

Neoplasms of the hard palate.

PURPOSE: Although the most common neoplastic lesion of the oral cavity is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), primary neoplastic lesions of the hard palate have not been systematically reviewed to date. The aim of this study was to determine the histopathologic composition and characteristics of neoplasms of the hard palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 66 patients with a primary neoplasm of the hard palate managed at the authors' institution from 1985 through 2012 was performed. Demographic features, malignancy rate, histopathologic characteristics and distribution, TNM stag…

Leiomyosarcoma of the soft palate.

Tumors of the smooth muscles are rarely seen, as the number of smooth muscles is low within the intraoral region. Leiomyosarcoma is a type of malign tumor originating from smooth muscles. The most common regions of leiomyosarcoma of the oral cavity are the maxilla and mandible. In this article, we present a leiomyosarcoma detected in a 20-year-old male patient who was admitted to the clinic with the complaint of a mass for about three months. The mass was located in the left half of the soft palate and it was resected en bloc with the mucosa. No recurrence was observed during the two-year foll…

Pleomorphic adenoma of the palate.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common mixed benign tumor of major salivary glands. Approximately 80% of these tumors arise in the parotid gland, whereas 7% arise in the minor salivary glands. The most common sites for minor salivary gland where pleomorphic adenoma arises are the palates followed by lips and cheek. We report a palate mass in a 46-year-old male patient. The initial cytologic diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration biopsy was pleomorphic adenoma. This report describes a case of pleomorphic adenoma regarding all distinctive diagnoses with the review of the literature.

Schwannoma of the hard palate.

About half of all neurogenic tumors are seen in the head and neck region. The types of neurogenic tumors must be distinguished. Schwannomas originate from Schwann cells of the neural sheath and are solitary, well-encapsulated, slow-growing adjacent to the parental nerve but extrinsic to the nerve fascicles.Approximately 25% to 45% of all schwannomas are seen in the head and neck region and are found rarely in the oral cavity. Most of the intraoral schwannomas are located in the tongue. Other less common locations are the buccal mucosa, palate, base of the mouth, gingiva, and lips.In this study…

Schwannoma of the hard palate.

Schwannomas are rare, benign neoplasms that can arise from any cranial, peripheral, or autonomic nerve that contains Schwann cells. Approximately 25% to 45% of all schwannomas occur in the head and neck. They occur most commonly in the eighth cranial nerve, but it has been reported that 20% to 58% arise in the oral cavity, with approximately 10% of these located on the hard palate. We report a case of schwannoma of the hard palate, present important pathologic considerations for diagnosis, and provide a review of the literature regarding extracranial schwannomas.

Haemangiopericytoma of the hard palate.

Haemangiopericytoma is an aggressive vascular tumour with a high propensity for recurrence and metastasis. It typically occurs in the soft tissues of the extremities and trunk, and is rarely seen in the oral cavity. A case of haemangiopericytoma of the hard palate is presented. A 48-year-old woman presented with a gradually enlarging mass on the left side of her hard palate for 3 months. CT scans revealed a mass on the left side of the hard palate which extended to the nasal cavity and left maxillary sinus by causing erosion in the bones. Due to the possibility of local recurrence and occasion…

Palate and dentition in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Although psychotic symptoms are central to the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia, other neuropsychiatric syndromes as well as widespread anatomical and physiological abnormalities in the periphery are also common in the disorder. We decided to test the hypothesis that developmental abnormalities are present throughout the body by examining the oral cavity and in particular the teeth and dimensions of the palate of patients with schizophrenia. METHOD: Dental stone models (casts) were made from impressions of the teeth and palate in schizophrenia (N=28) and control (N=25) subject…
