Ocular alterations in patients with cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a parasitosis with high prevalence and increasing epidemiologic relevance. Ocular manifestations of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) have been well studied, but less is known about ocular alterations in cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (CL/MCL). Fifty-five patients with CL/MCL and a seronegative control group of 39 were examined ophthalmologically in Paraguay. CL/MCL was diagnosed clinically by detection of the parasite, with serological methods and/or intradermal reaction.

[Auricular myiasis cause by Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (Coquerel, 1858)].

We report a 37 years old male, coming from Paraguay, who consulted for tinnitus, hearing loss, foreign body sensation and pain in the left ear. He informed that a fly entered into his external auditive channel, five days before consulting. We observed the destruction of the tympanic membrane and 22 live larvae were extracted. Following the larval extraction, these injuries evolved to complete resolution. Larvae were identified as pertaining to the genus Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Empowering Local Health Promoters: Capacity Building for Behaviour Change in Low-Resource Settings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Behaviour change interventions (BCIs) are widely used to improve health outcomes, yet practitioners in the field often lack the training to design, implement and evaluate them effectively. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a ten-module, theory- and evidence-based training programme on practitioners' knowledge, self-efficacy and intention to use BCIs, particularly in low-resource settings. METHODS: The training was delivered to Health Promotion Technicians (N = 40) in Paraguay (2022) and Bangladesh (2024). It covered key behavioural science concepts and prac

"Between the cross and the sword": Brazilian children face an influenza epidemic while still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Influenza activity remained at inter-seasonal levels; however, influenza A(H3N2) detections continue to increase in Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Most of the activity and rising trend of A(H3N2) detections are recorded in Brazil. A bulletin issued by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) reported significant presence of the influenza A virus, both in children and in the adult population, among cases of SARS-Cov-2.This situation is worrying, as vaccination campaigns were hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A case of cerebral sparganosis in South America.

Cerebral sparganosis (CS) is a parasitic infection caused by the larva of Spirometra mansonoides. Rarely it can affect the human brain. We report the case of a 24-year old man from Paraguay who suffered from seizures and headache for one year. A frontal tumor was diagnosed by CT-scan and was subsequently resected. The pathological examination revealed a larva with Sparganum characteristics. The evolution of the patient was satisfactory. As far as we know, this is the first case of CS reported in South-America.

A case of veno-occlusive disease of the liver in Britain associated with herbal tea consumption.

Veno-occlusive disease of the liver with clinical and pathological features similar to those of the condition occurring in the Caribbean is described in a young woman resident in Britain. The diagnosis was made from liver biopsies and hepatic venography and was confirmed at necropsy. Small amounts of pyrroliziding alkaloids were recovered from a sample of mate (Paraguay) tea, owned by the patient, to which she was addicted. It seems probable that the consumption of large amounts of this tea over a period of years was the cause of the hepatic disease.

Acute hepatotoxic poisoning by Sessea vestioides in cattle: a spontaneous outbreak in northern Uruguay.

Sessea vestioides (Solanaceae) is a hepatotoxic species distributed in Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and Uruguay, with very limited documentation in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. We describe an outbreak with 18% mortality in 330 yearling heifers after accidently entering an invaded paddock. Necropsy revealed serosal petechiae and an enhanced lobular liver pattern, while histopathology showed centrilobular hemorrhagic necrosis. Diagnosis was based on epidemiology, pathology, and plant identification. The toxin of S. vestioides remains unknown.

Probable primary cutaneous histoplasmosis in a patient infected with HIV.

Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by a dimorphic fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum. Most infections occur after inhalation of fungal spores. A wide variety of clinical manifestations can occur depending on the host response and the extent of inoculation. We report a case of probable cutaneous histoplasmosis after trauma in a 26-year-old man from Paraguay who was also infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Diagnosis was based on histological and mycological examination. No systemic involvement was found.

[Inequalities in COVID-19 mortality in Argentina's northern international border. Space-time analysis].

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed inequalities in mortality across territories. Northern Argentina, characterized by high social vulnerability and active international borders, despite formal closures, may have favored the spread of the virus. OBJECTIVE: To identify high-mortality clusters (HMC) due to COVID-19 among older adults (≥60 years) between 2020-2022, in relation to socioeconomic conditions and the border strip (FF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based ecological study of COVID-19 deaths was conducted in provinces with international border strips. Spatial and space-t

Presence and distribution of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in South America: ecological niche modeling and epidemiological implications under the One Health approach.

Myasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae (Coquerel, 1858), represents a significant sanitary and economic challenge under the One Health approach, affecting human health, livestock production, and biodiversity. Studies on the spatial ecology and distribution of this species in South America (SA) have been scarce. This study aimed to model real and potential suitability areas for C. hominivorax in SA, based on myiasis cases in humans and other vertebrates reported in the scientific literature. The MaxEnt model was developed using WorldClim bioclimatic variables clipped to SA, with 1,000

Quality Assessment of Dried Blood Spots from Patients With Tuberculosis from 4 Countries.

BACKGROUND: Dried blood spot (DBS) sampling is a blood collection tool that uses a finger prick to obtain a blood drop on a DBS card. It can be used for therapeutic drug monitoring, a method that uses blood drug concentrations to optimize individual treatment. DBS sampling is believed to be a simpler way of blood collection compared with venous sampling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of DBSs from patients with tuberculosis all around the world based on quality indicators in a structured assessment procedure. METHODS: Total 464 DBS cards were obtained from 4 countries: Bang

Epidemiologic profile, sexual history, pathologic features, and human papillomavirus status of 103 patients with penile carcinoma.

PURPOSE: The incidence of penile cancer is four times higher in Paraguay than in the United States or Europe. There are no adequate scientific explanations for this geographical variation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the interplay among risk factors, morphology of the primary tumor, and HPV status. METHODS: Information on socioeconomic status, education level, habits, and sexual history was obtained in 103 Paraguayan patients with penile cancer. All patients were then treated by surgery, and specimens were evaluated histopathologically. RESULTS: Patients usually dwelled in rural/s

Within- and between-country variation in gestational age thresholds for retinopathy of prematurity screening in Latin America.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Most Latin American countries have national retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening guidelines, but how consistently these thresholds are applied and whether the metric used affects cross-country comparability is poorly documented. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We analysed data from the SPROP (Sociedad Panamericana de Retinopatía del Prematuro) database (2021-2024), including 333 of 343 registrants from 17 countries who provided gestational age (GA) and/or birth weight (BW) screening cutoffs. We assessed between- and within-country variation, guideline concordance, and relative

Genetic variability and identification of the intermediate snail hosts of Schistosoma mansoni.

Studies based on shell or reproductive organ morphology and genetic considerations suggest extensive intraspecific variation in Biomphalaria snails. The high variability at the morphological and genetic levels, as well as the small size of some specimens and similarities between species complicate the correct identification of these snails. Here we review our work using methods based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification for analysis of genetic variation and identification of Biomphalaria snails from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Arbitrarily primed-PCR revealed that the g

Observations on neonatal mortality of the Chacoan peccary, Catagonus wagneri.

The considerable neonatal mortality of a captive population of Chacoan peccaries, the taguá (Catagonus wagneri), in Paraguay was investigated with the examination of six newborn animals and one adult. Most deaths occur primarily because of restriction of space resulting in competition for space and nutrition. The adult had nonlethal inhalation pulmonary anthracosis. Neonatal pulmonary nocardiosis was noted in one infant and is believed to be related to the dust storms prevailing locally. Another neonate had a duplication of the pelvis, rear extremities, and one ovary, representing a type of co

A review of the louse genus Tinamotaecola (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Philopteridae sensu lato), with description of a new species.

We studied a collection of lice from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile containing all four known species and one new species (described herein) in the genus Tinamotaecola, parasites of birds of the families Cariamidae and Tinamidae. We also (1) describe previously unknown second and third nymphal instars of two Tinamotaecola species, (2) discuss hosts and geographical ranges for all Tinamotaecola species, and (3) speculate on possible macroevolutionary events that may explain the current distribution of these lice on their respective avian hosts.
