In light of the DSM-5 dimensional model of personality: Borderline personality disorder at the crossroads with the bipolar spectrum.

BACKGROUND: State-of-the-art research highlights that borderline personality disorder (PD) and bipolar spectrum disorders have clinical characteristics in common, which imply uncertainty in differential diagnoses. Although there is a growing body of literature on the DSM-5 dimensional model of personality disorder, its discriminative features between these clinical samples are still understudied. In this study, we seek to identify the best set of predictors that differentiate between borderline PD and bipolar spectrum, based on pathological and normative personality traits and symptoms. Paranoid personality masking an atypical case of frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a debilitating disease that is well described in the "Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders … ypical presentation of our patient first led to her incorrect diagnosis of a psychotic disorder and paranoid personality disorder. As a result of this diagnosis, she was treated unsuccessfully. A subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) then showed atrophy of frontal and temporal lobes bilaterally (left more prominent than right) which confirmed the diagnosis of FTD. The im …

Open assessment of the safety and efficacy of thioridazine in the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder.

A 12-week open study was conducted to assess the possible efficacy and safety of low-dose thioridazine in 11 outpatients (8 women, 3 men) with borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosed according to DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association 1987) and the Diagnostic Interview for Borderline Patients (DIB; Gunderson et al. 1981) criteria. Mean thioridazine dose averaged 92 mg per day across the duration of this study. At endpoint, there was a significant reduction in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS; Overall & Gorham 1988) scores, and patients appeared to be less symptomatic on the im

Associations between body weight and personality disorders in a nationally representative sample.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, in the general population, individuals in numerous abnormal body weight categories had higher odds of having personality disorders (PDs) than normal-weight individuals. Although personality functioning is hypothesized to be associated with body weight, there is a dearth of empirical evaluation of this topic. METHODS: The association of body weight (five categories: underweight [body mass index [BMI] <18.5]; normal [18.5 <or= BMI <25]; overweight [25 <or= BMI <30]; obese [30 <or= BMI <40]; and extremely obese [BMI >or=40]) with personality disorders was investi

Schizophrenia spectrum personality disorders in psychometrically identified schizotypes at two-year follow-up.

Earlier (Bolinskey et al., 2015), we reported that psychometrically identified schizotypes displayed greater symptom levels and higher incidences of schizophrenia spectrum (schizotypal, schizoid, paranoid, and avoidant) personality disorders (PDs). In this study, 49 schizotypes and 39 matched controls participated in follow-up assessments after two years. Participants were previously identified as schizotypes or controls based on scores on the Chapman Psychosis Proneness Scales (CPPS), and were interviewed at baseline and follow-up with the Personality Disorder Interview for DSM-IV (PDI-IV). New dimensions in the quantitative classification of mental illness.

CONTEXT: Patterns of comorbidity among mental disorders are thought to reflect the natural organization of mental illness. Factor analysis can be used to investigate this structure and construct a quantitative classification system. Prior studies identified 3 dimensions of psychopathology: internalizing, externalizing, and thought disorder. However, research has largely relied on common disorders and community samples. Consequently, it is unclear how well the identified organization applies to patients and how other major disorders fit into it. OBJECTIVE: To analyze comorbidity among a wide r

Validity of the family history method for diagnosing schizophrenia, schizophrenia-related psychoses, and schizophrenia-spectrum personality disorders in first-degree relatives of schizophrenia probands.

This study examined the validity of the family history method for diagnosing schizophrenia, schizophrenia-related psychoses, and schizophrenia-spectrum personality disorders in first-degree relatives of schizophrenia probands. This is the first large-scale study that examined the validity of the family history method for diagnosing DSM-III-R personality disorders. The best estimate DSM-III-R diagnoses of 264 first-degree relatives of 117 adult-onset schizophrenia probands based on direct structured diagnostic interviews, family history interview, and medical records were compared to Family His

Therapeutic Particularities with Depot Medications in Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a neurodegenerative disease with personality degradation, changes in behavior, cognition, affective disorder and reduced socio-professional insertion. Early diagnosis is necessary and maintenance is ensured by antipsychotic treatment and for non-compliant patients there is an alternative to depot medication that greatly improves therapeutic adherence. The study presents the case of a 43-year-old patient diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders V-TR criteria that showed a favorable evolution under depot treatment.

On the Borderline Syndrome and Its Relationship to Schizophrenia.

This article explores the historical and phenomenological overlap between borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia, highlighting the presence of frank psychotic symptoms and psychotic and psychotic-like thinking in borderline psychopathology. Early theorists conceptualized borderline personality as a schizophrenia-like syndrome, and many pioneers in the understanding of borderline pathology began their careers with interest in schizophrenia. Similarities between the two syndromes include affect-laden perception; ideas of reference; paranoid tendencies, especially suspicious and reacti

TEMPORAL LOBE EPILEPSY: A CLINICAL STUDY OF 47 CASES.

Clinical features of 47 cases of temporal lobe epilepsy are analyzed and treatment of this disorder is outlined. Twenty-four per cent of all cases of epilepsy seen by one of the authors over a two-year period were of this type. Fifteen of these 47 patients had a history of birth injury. Care must be taken to distinguish the symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy from those of acute anxiety or hysteria and to differentiate the short-lived temporal lobe attack from centrencephalic petit mal.Interictal personality disturbances were identified in 11 of 24 persons with temporal lobe epilepsy, four of 3

[Psychiatric disorders in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy].

Mild personality problems have been described in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), but clinical practice shows that JME can be diagnosed in patients with more or less severe psychiatric disorders (PD). The presence in JME patients of personality disorders has been described repeatedly, but never quantified. We thus decided to evaluate, using the DSM IV, the current prevalence and types of PD in a large series of consecutive, newly referred patients with JME. Among 170 consecutive JME cases referred to two departments of epileptology (Marseilles and Nice) between 1981 and 1998 (6
