Increased heart rate response to parasympathetic and beta adrenergic blockade in growth-retarded fetal lambs.

To determine the influence of the autonomic nervous system on the circulation of normal and growth-retarded fetal lambs we measured the responses of heart rate and arterial blood pressure to parasympathetic (atropine 0.2 mg/kg) and beta-adrenergic (propranolol 1.0 mg/kg) blockade in the last quarter of gestation. The heart rate response to parasympathetic blockade increased with gestational age in both normal and growth-retarded fetuses but in the growth-retarded fetuses there was a significantly greater response to parasympathetic blockade than in control fetuses from 121 days' gestation to t

Investigating Occupational Stress in ICU Nurses: A Comparative Analysis of Mental and Physical Stress Using Heart Rate Variability and Wrist-Worn Accelerometer Data.

ObjectiveThis study examined a novel method to differentiate between mental and physical stress using Baevsky's Enhanced Stress Technique.BackgroundOccupational stress events, whether mental or physical, are handled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which have been shown to be associated with heart rate variability (HRV), but have not been previously differentiated.MethodNaturalistic HRV and accelerometer data were measured continuously using wrist-worn sensors during a typical 12-h direct-care nursing shift (28 ICU nurses). Physical and mental stress events were calculat…

[Heart rate variability. Applications in psychiatry].

BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system sends messages through the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system innervates the cardioaccelerating center of the heart, the lungs (increased ventilatory rhythm and dilatation of the bronchi) and the non-striated muscles (artery contraction). It releases adrenaline and noradrenaline. As opposed to the sympathetic nervous system, it innervates the cardiomoderator center of the heart, the lungs (slower ventilatory rhythm and contraction of the bronchi) and the non-striated muscles (artery dilatation). It uses acetyl…

Clinical assessment of sympathetic function in man.

Investigations are reviewed which are suitable for use in clinical situations in which lesions of the sympathetic nervous system are suspected. Particular attention is given to the problems of cardiovascular regulation as orthostatic hypotension is one of the commoner manifestations of sympathetic failure. Tests of the autonomic innervation of the eyes are also discussed. Tests of parasympathetic function are briefly described, as both parts of the autonomic nervous system may be affected by the same disease process.

The role of the autonomic nervous system in trigeminal neuralgia.

The role of the autonomic nervous system in trigeminal neuralgia is discussed. While the trigeminal nerve is accompanied by both sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers, first and second branch phenomena are predominantly associated with sympathetic stimuli. Third branch phenomena, by contrast, primarily involved a parasympathetic component. Atropine sulfate and beta-receptor blockers are suggested as a therapeutic modality. On ancillary studies involving 30 patients with trigeminal neuralgia an abnormal glucose tolerance and/or increased cholesterol level was found to be present in 28 cases.

Novel Cross-Species Salivary Gland-Parasympathetic Neuron Coculture System.

The parasympathetic nervous system is essential for salivary gland development and functionality. Parasympathetic neuron (parasymN) innervation is the main neural network that controls salivary secretion. Therefore, an exclusive model to study parasympathetic neurons and salivary gland tissue circuitry will significantly improve the understanding of the role of parasymN activation on salivary regulation. Harvesting primary rodent parasymNs is challenging due to their body-wide disbursed location. Similarly, the salivary glands are distributed in various locations around and within the oral cav…

The nasal cycle in patients with autonomic nervous disturbance.

The nasal cycle is thought to be controlled by the autonomic nervous system. In this study, we measured nasal airflow resistance in patients with lesions of the autonomic nerves that supply the nasal mucosa. We examined 20 patients with facial palsy as examples of parasympathetic disturbance, five with Horner's syndrome as examples of sympathetic disturbance, and one with acute pandysautonomia. The nasal cycle was observed in 13 patients with facial palsy and four patients with Horner's syndrome. The nasal cycle was also observed in one patient with acute pandysautonomia and disturbance of the

Autonomic neurotoxicity of jellyfish and marine animal venoms.

Venoms and poisons of jellyfish and other marine animals can induce damage to the human nervous and circulatory systems. Clues to the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of these lesions can be obtained from data of human envenomations and animal experimentation. Because many investigators are unaware that marine animal venoms have autonomic actions, this paper aims to elucidate the broad antagonistic or toxic effects these compounds have on the autonomic nervous system. Marine venoms can affect ion transport of particularly sodium and calcium, induce channels or pores in neural and muscu

The role of the autonomic nerves in the control of nasal circulation.

Patients suffering from allergic or vasomotor rhinitis usually show nasal mucosal hyperaemia, engorgement, hyperrhinorrhoea and obstruction of the nasal airway. The nasal mucosa is drained by two venous systems which are anatomically and functionally separate. The nasal mucosa receives tone discharges from the sympathetic nerves but not from the parasympathetic nerves. Sympathetic nerve stimulation causes constriction of the resistance vessels via the alpha-adrenergic mechanism and constriction of the capacitance vessels via the alpha-adrenergic mechanism and some non-adrenergic and non-cholin

Sympathoactivation and rho-kinase-dependent baroreflex function in experimental renovascular hypertension with reduced kidney mass.

BACKGROUND: Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system is frequent in subjects with cardiovascular disease. The contribution of different forms of renovascular hypertension and the mechanisms contributing to autonomic dysfunction in hypertension are incompletely understood. Here, murine models of renovascular hypertension with preserved (2-kidneys-1 clip, 2K1C) and reduced (1-kidney-1 clip, 1K1C) kidney mass were studied with regard to autonomic nervous system regulation (sympathetic tone: power-spectral analysis of systolic blood pressure; parasympathetic tone: power-spectral analysis of h

Genetics-based manipulation of adipose tissue sympathetic innervation.

There is renewed interest in leveraging the thermogenic capacity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) to … metabolic disease. Peripheral neuromodulation in the form of electrical manipulation of the SNS and parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) has been used for the management of pain and many other conditions, but progress is hampered by lack of detailed knowledge of function-specific neurons and nerves innervating particular organs and tissues. Therefore, the goal of the National …

Heart failure as an autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

In heart failure, it has been recognized that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is activated and the imbalance of the activity of the SNS and vagal activity interaction occurs. The abnormal activation of the SNS leads to further worsening of heart failure. Many previous clinical and basic studies have demonstrated that the abnormal activation of the SNS is caused by the enhancement of excitatory inputs including changes in: (1) peripheral baroreceptor and chemoreceptor reflexes; (2) chemical mediators that control sympathetic outflow; and (3) central sites that integrate sympathetic outflow

Physiology, assessment, and disorders of the pupil.

Proper examination of the pupil provides an objective measure of the integrity of the pregeniculate afferent visual pathway and allows assessment of sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation to the eye. Infrared videography and pupillography are increasingly used to study the dynamic behavior of the pupil in common disorders, such as Horner's syndrome and tonic pupil.

Apolipoprotein E4, cholinergic integrity and the pharmacogenetics of Alzheimer's disease.

Recent evidence indicates that apolipoprotein E (apoE) plays a central role in the brain's response to injury. The coordinated expression of apoE and its receptors (the so-called LDL [low density lipoprotein] receptor family) appears to regulate the transport and internalization of cholesterol and phospholipids during the early phase of the re-innervation process in the adult brain. During dendritic remodelling and synaptogenesis, neurons progressively repress the synthesis of cholesterol in favour of cholesterol internalization through the apoE/LDL receptor pathway. The discovery a few years
