Self-efficacy effects in combined CBT-attention training for pediatric anxiety.

Augmenting cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with attention bias modification training (ABMT) has shown promising yet inconsistent results. Thus, research is needed to identify potential moderators of treatment outcomes. Self-efficacy beliefs have been linked to CBT treatment response and potentially to the cognitive mechanisms which influence engagement with ABMT. This study examined the relation between self-efficacy and treatment response among pediatric patients (N = 111) undergoing CBT for pediatric anxiety supplemented with either an active or sham ABMT. Moderated-mediation analyses rev

Parent-to-child aggression, intimate partner aggression, conflict resolution, and children's social-emotional competence in early childhood.

Early childhood is critical to the development of children's social-emotional competence, which predicts peer relations and school adjustment in later periods of childhood. The effects of experiencing or witnessing aggression on children's social-emotional development are well known, yet the role of conflict resolution within the family has not been sufficiently studied. Social information processing models suggests that children who experience positive forms of conflict resolution within the family are likely to generalize these experiences and related skills outside the family, and thus deve

Longitudinal measurement equivalence of subjective language brokering experiences scale in Mexican American adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Language brokering occurs frequently in immigrant families and can have significant implications for the well-being of family mem … e subscales of language brokering: linguistic benefits, socioemotional benefits, efficacy, positive parent-child relationships, parental dependence, negative feelings, and centrality. Tests of factorial invariance show that these subscales demonstrate, at minimum, partial strict invariance across time and across experiences of translating for mothers and fathers, and in …

Caregiver object labels within supported and coordinated joint engagement during interaction with toddlers at elevated and typical likelihood of autism.

BACKGROUND: Early in development, caregivers' object labelling contributes to children's word learning. Language development is a bi-directional process, and differences in joint engagement (JE) and language among children with developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may provide caregivers varying contexts and opportunities to provide object labels. However, potential variation in caregivers' production of object labels and its relation to language development remain relatively unexplored among toddlers with ASD. AIMS: This study characterized the structural and func

The parental paradox.

Parenthood is in turmoil: On the one hand many of the parental tasks have been taken over by social institutions and on the other psychological aspects of the parent-child relation are emphasized. We see three important developments: The relationship between parents and children has been democratized, the psychological and juridical position has been acknowledged and the social check on parental behaviour has changed dramatically. In this dynamic field, children's rights have risen as a new way of solving family problems. Rights for children create new possibilities for recognizing the growing

Relationships between parenting and illness factors and child behaviour difficulties in children with asthma and/or eczema.

Chronic health conditions such as asthma and eczema are common and are associated with significant psychosocial sequelae for children and their families. A number of parenting variables have been implicated in child health outcomes; however, there are gaps in understanding of the relationships between parenting and child adjustment in the context of chronic illness. This study examined the role that modifiable parenting factors including parenting style, self-efficacy, and adjustment play in explaining general and illness-related child behaviour and emotional problems. Parents (N = 107) of chi

Unveiling multi-level determinants on empathy among Chinese primary and secondary school students: evidence from SSES 2019.

Empathy has attracted more and more attention among scholars, whereas potential determinants on the empathy of primary and secondary school students have been rarely discussed in Chinese context. The present study, utilizing a hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analysis, investigated the multi-level determinants on empathy of Chinese primary and secondary school students (N = 6,926) based on the 2019 Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) data. At student-level, the results displayed that mental well-being, global mindedness, teacher-student relations, peer relations, and sense of belong

Interparental conflict spillover: Examining parental depression risk pathways.

Spillover from interparental conflict (IPC) to the parent-child relationship is a risk factor for adolescent emotional, social, and behavioral maladjustment. Parental depression increases the risk for more frequent and intense IPC over periods of months to years, but relatively little is known about whether parental depressive symptoms increase the risk for IPC and/or the propensity for spillover on short timescales. Using daily diary methods, we tested two hypotheses to evaluate whether parental depressive symptoms predict increased risk for IPC spillover: (a) a stress generation hypothesis, …

Brief Report: Investigating Temporal Factors in the Context of Parenting an Autistic Child.

The current study was a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data collected in New Zealand. Parents (n = 291) of an autistic child completed an online survey that included temporal/demographic questions relating to the parent and child, and parent ratings of the child's core ASD symptoms, their parenting stress, and psychological well-being. Child and parent ages were related to ASD core symptoms, parenting stress, and psychological well-being, the parent-child age gap was not. Diagnostic delay was only positively associated with parent depression and negatively associated with child communic

Interpersonal dyadic influences on transitions between pain states: a narrative review and synthesis.

Pain is not experienced in isolation; it is affected by and affects other people. Interactions between parents and partners and people living with pain affect beliefs, emotions and behaviours, and pain progress and change. We searched systematically for longitudinal studies of associations between specific familial, dyadic, interpersonal factors and quantitative pain transitions. We coded studies for risk of bias. For the narrative synthesis, we grouped findings by dyads-parents and children, and people with pain and their partners (usually spouses), and then by the psychosocial mechanism/s. W

[The significance of prenatal diagnosis for the creation of mother-child relationships and the mother's representation of the child].

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary researches state that the child's mental development depends on the quality of its relations with their mother starting from pregnancy. They point to those elements of maternal functioning which play a role in the mother-child interaction, decide about mother-child relation and the child functioning in various dimensions. One of them is the child's representation in mother's mind. Maternal representation of the child contains conscious and unconscious elements: fantasies, character traits, feelings towards the child, and representation herself as a mother, representa

Parents' hostility in dyadic marital and triadic family settings and children's behavior problems.

The authors examined the relation between parents' hostility during conflict-focused discussions and child behavior problems. Parents engaged in 3 discussions: a dyadic marital discussion of marital disagreements, a dyadic marital discussion of child-related disagreements, and a triadic family discussion with the child about the child-related disagreements. Eighty-nine 2-parent community families with a child aged 9-13 years participated. A significant 3-way interaction between interparental hostility, parent-to-child hostility, and child sex accounted for variance in children's behavior probl

PRISM: a brief screening tool to identify risk in parents of youth with chronic pain.

Having a child with chronic pain impacts a parent's life. Reciprocally, parent cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses to the child's chronic pain can influence the child's pain experience. The purpose of this study is to develop a brief self-report screening tool (Parent Risk and Impact Screening Measure [PRISM]) of parent psychosocial functioning and behavioral responses to child pain. This measure assesses parents' reports of their own stress, health, psychosocial functioning, and disruption in activities due to their child's pain and related disability. In an effort to preliminarily

History of pediatric TBI hospitalization and current child-parent relationship quality in China.

BACKGROUND: Long-term child-parent relationship quality following hospitalization for pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether current child-parent conflict and closeness were related to the children's history of TBI-related experiences and contemporary child/family characteristics. METHODS: The sample included 202 Chinese children (Boys: 60.4%) with a history of hospitalization for TBI. On average, the children were 11.2 years old (SD = 1.59) and sustained TBI at 8.5 years old (SD = 1.6). TBI-related data were obtained from hospital medi
