Opportunities and challenges within green spaces during COVID-19: Perspectives of visitors and managers in Maine, USA.

COVID-19 impacted, and continues to impact, green spaces across the world, altering visitation patterns, and presenting novel management challenges. As COVID-19 has evolved, the long-term implications on communication, management, and conflict as diverse people interact in green spaces remains uncertain. Our work responds to calls to consider diverse perspectives of individuals whose lives intersect with green spaces. Using a qualitative case study methodology, we explored the meanings and experiences of green space managers and visitors in the State of Maine, USA, during the COVID-19 pandemic

Exposure to greenspace and cancer incidence, prevalence, and mortality: A systematic review and meta-analyses.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available literature on the association between greenspace exposure and all-sites and site-specific cancer incidence, prevalence, and mortality in adults. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for original articles published, without language restriction until September 2021. We assessed the risk of bias in each study and the overall quality of evidence for exposure-outcome pairs that were reported in two or more studies. Out of the 18 included studies, cross-sectional studies were the most common study design (n = 8), and most

Sarcoptic mange outbreak decimates South American wild camelid populations in San Guillermo National Park, Argentina.

Sarcoptic mange epidemics can devastate wildlife populations. In 2014, mange was first detected in vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) and guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in San Guillermo National Park (SGNP), Argentina. This study describes the temporal dynamics of the outbreak, its effects on the park's wild camelid populations between 2017-2019, and investigates the potential source of the epidemic. From May 2017 to June 2018, transect surveys indicated a sharp decrease in the density of living vicuñas and guanacos by 68% and 77%, respectively. By April 2019 no vicuñas or guanacos were recorded on transect

Ecological aspects of potential arbovirus vectors (Diptera: Culicidae) in an urban landscape of Southern Amazon, Brazil.

Amazon has been under intense human pressure, especially in the so-called "Arc of Deforestation" in the Eastern and Southern regions. Changes in biodiversity due to landscape disturbance in municipalities at the Arc of Deforestation are likely to impact mosquito species leading to the potential for emergence of arboviruses. Our aim was to describe the composition and structure of culicids in Sinop, a municipality located in the Southern Amazon at the State of Mato Grosso, as well as their presence in urban habitats, analyzing climate variables and potential risk of arbovirus transmission. Lemur Distribution in Relation to Treefall Canopy Gaps in Masoala National Park, Northeast Madagascar.

Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot facing increasing anthropogenic pressures, with 95% of lemur species threatened with extinction. In addition to habitat loss and hunting, cyclones create treefall gaps with unknown effects on arboreal species. We examined the effect of Cyclone Eliakim, which struck Masoala National Park in March 2018 with sustained wind speeds reaching 151 km/h. We assessed whether lemur densities and their microhabitat niches changed in relation to the cyclone, and whether their distributions were related to treefall gaps. We conducted 110.42 km of transect walks for diurn

Environmental drivers of parasitic nematode infection in wild ungulates in the Serengeti National Park.

Parasite infections in host populations frequently display seasonal patterns that can shape host behavior, fitness, and population dynamics. Despite recognition that seasonality plays a key role in infection dynamics across numerous host-parasite systems, the drivers of seasonal infection dynamics for parasites with different life cycles are often unknown. This lack of system-specific understanding restricts our ability to predict when and why parasite infections and their cascading effects on host populations will have the greatest impact. We investigated how seasonality and environmental var

Modeling Moose-Wolf interactions in Isle Royale National Park using sparseidentification of nonlinear dynamics.

Building the mathematical models to study the dynamics of prey-predator relationship in ecology is a long standing research topic. The only connection that has been established between real data and ecological models is through parameter estimation. Till date, only a few studies have attempted to formulate ecological models directly from real data without prior knowledge of the underlying structure of the system being modeled. Present work is an attempt in this direction. The ecological study of the moose (Alces alces) and wolf (Canis lupus) populations of Isle Royale National Park (USA) is th
