Myxoid Liposarcoma of the Parotid Gland.

Liposarcoma is extremely rare in the parotid gland. In this article, we report the case of an 87-year-old man who presented to our department with swelling in the left parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a tumor in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. Total parotidectomy and ipsilateral lymph node dissection were performed. Histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of myxoid liposarcoma of the parotid gland. On imaging, there was no evidence of nodal or distant metastasis. Radiation therapy was planned, but the patient refused to receive treatment. After a foll

Anti-interferon-γ autoantibody-associated disseminated Mycobacterium abscessus infection mimicking parotid cancer with multiple metastases: A case report.

RATIONALE: Among the nontuberculous mycobacteria, Mycobacterium abscessus is a common cause of skin, soft tissue, and bone infections. However, disseminated M. abscessus infection that mimics cancer metastasis with an underlying relatively immunocompetent condition has rarely been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A nonsmoking 73-year-old man with an underlying relatively immunocompetent condition reported a 2-month history of a mass in the region of his right parotid gland that had been steadily increasing in size. DIAGNOSES: The head and neck computed tomography showed an avidly enhancing tumor

Surgical management of accessory parotid tumors.

Accessory parotid gland tumors are defined as masses within salivary gland tissue located adjacent to Stensen's duct, but separate from the main body of the parotid gland. These tumors usually present as asymptomatic cheek masses. There is a temptation to excise these masses locally; however, the likelihood of injury to branches of the facial nerve is high. The best surgical approach to tumors in the accessory parotid region is via a standard parotid incision and concomitant superficial parotidectomy. Eight patients have been surgically treated with accessory parotid gland masses. Six patients

False diagnosis caused by Warthin tumor of the parotid gland combined with actinomycosis.

A case is reported in which a unilateral parotid gland cystadenolymphoma was combined with actinomycosis. A 48-year-old woman presented with a mass in the left parotid region and paresis of the lower left palpebra. The computed tomography, echography, and parotid radiographic findings did not exclude a neoplasm of the left parotid gland. The ramus of the mandible was involved in the process. Intraoperative freezing histology, total parotidectomy, and partial mandibulectomy were performed, with sacrifice of the facial nerve followed by nerve reconstruction. The final histological evaluation was

Role of fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of swellings in the salivary gland regions: a study of 712 cases.

INTRODUCTION: A mass in the salivary gland region often presents a diagnostic challenge with regard to its site of origin (salivary versus nonsalivary), benign or malignant nature, and tissue-specific diagnosis. The present study describes the utility of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the diagnosis of these lesions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Over a 6-year period (January 1994 to December 1999), 712 patients aged between 6 months and 91 years (median, 37 years) were subjected to FNA of swellings in their salivary gland regions. Male:female ratio was 1.28:1. The swellings were mostly loca

Excision of a Lipoma Between the Parotid Gland and Masseter Muscle via the High Perimandibular Approach: A Case Report.

Subcutaneous tumors in the cheek region present a surgical challenge due to the complex anatomy involving the facial nerve and parotid duct. We report the case of a 72-year-old male with a soft, mobile mass in the left subcutaneous cheek. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined 3 cm lipomatous lesion situated between the parotid gland and the masseter muscle. The mass was hyperintense on T1- and T2-weighted images and hypointense on fat-suppressed T2-weighted imaging, consistent with a lipoma. The tumor was successfully excised en bloc using the high perimandibular approach, which i

Cryptococcal parotid involvement: an uncommon localization of Cryptococcus neoformans.

We describe a cryptococcal infection localized in the parotid gland of an otherwise healthy 72-year-old woman. The patient presented with a painful, approximately 4.5 cm diameter mass in the anterior region of her right ear. Her symptoms were mild and uncharacteristic. The patient had previously fallen on her face in her garden, causing the loss and breakage of her dentures. Since the soil of the garden contained chicken droppings, it is quite likely that the oral prothesis became contaminated on contacting the soil. The fungus probably entered the parotid gland through the traumatization of t

Actinomycosis of the parotid gland.

- Actinomycosis is a slowly progressive infection caused by anaerobic bacteria with relatively decreasing incidence now-a-days. The Parotid gland is a quite rere site to be involved in cervico-facial actinomycosis as compared to the other sites in the face & neck region. We report a successfully managed case of Actinomycosis involving the parotid gland.

[A case of parotid pleomorphic adenoma metastasis to multiple organs].

In January 2011, a 64-year-old woman who had undergone tumor resection for pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland four times since her first operation in 1996 visited an orthopedist in our hospital complaining of pain in her right lower limb. Computed tomography (CT) of the whole body showed multiple tumors on the left parotid gland, right kidney, the sacrum, and both lungs. Biopsy of the sacral region and right nephrectomy were performed based on a clinical diagnosis of sacral and pulmonary metastases from renal cell carcinoma, and palliative radiation therapy was immediately begun on

Giant Parotid Abscess With Significant Skin Necrosis: A Case Report.

Poor blood glucose control is a common predisposing factor for parotid abscesses; however, extensive skin necrosis secondary to parotid abscesses has rarely been reported. In this article, we present the case of a 70-year-old man with poor glycemic control admitted to our hospital with swelling, congestion, and pain in the right parotid region that had gradually increased over 15 days prior to presentation. Based on the clinical, imaging, and laboratory findings, the patient was diagnosed with a giant parotid abscess with extensive skin necrosis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. The abscess res

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue with plasma cell differentiation: Periodic acid-schiff reaction-positive Dutcher body is a diagnostic clue to distinguish it from plasmacytoma.

We herein report a case of primary parotid extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) with Dutcher bodies. An 82-year-old man presented with a 4 cm × 2.5 cm mass in the left parotid region. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) showed localized abnormal fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the left parotid gland and lymph nodes of the left cervical region. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of the left parotid gland showed lymphoplasmacytoid cells with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive Dutcher bodies. A subsequent excisional bi

Parotid rhabdomyosarcoma with spindle cell features masquerading as a benign salivary gland tumour: Pitfall alert.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common sarcoma in children and adolescents, with the head and neck region, extremities, and genitourinary tract being the most common locations. Rhabdomyosarcoma of the salivary glands is rarely seen in children and can easily be mistaken for their benign counterparts. We report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma in the parotid region that clinically and cytologically masqueraded as a benign parotid gland tumour, leading to diagnostic difficulties. However, the excised specimen revealed histomorphological and immunophenotypic features consistent with rhabdomyosarcoma

Parapharyngeal growth of parotid tumors: report of two cases.

Two patients with parapharyngeal pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid gland, one malignant and one benign lesion, were successfully treated operatively. Deep lobe parotid tumors may occasionally grow along the stylomandibular tunnel into the parapharyngeal region. Since the opening of the tunnel is narrower and less distensible than the parapharyngeal region, the tumor assumes a dumbbell shape. The patients have an intraoral mass or asymmetry of the palate, with difficulties in swallowing or phonation. The diagnosis is suspected on bimanual examination, and puncture biopsies should be done to e

Tubercular sialadenitis of parotid gland - An extremely rare case series.

Tuberculosis is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. It most commonly involves the lungs (Pulmonary Tuberculosis), although it can involve any organ system in the body. However even in a country like India which has high burden of this disease, the tubercular invasion of parotid gland is extremely rare. Here we describe two such cases. Both patients were immune competent and presented with fever and swelling in the parotid region. They were diagnosed as tuberculosis of parotid gland by ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration and confirmed bacteriologica

Cavernous hemangioma with large phlebolith of the parotid gland.

Hemangiomas are vascular anomalies characterized by increased proliferation and turnover of endothelial cells. Hemangiomas of the parotid region are relatively uncommon in adult population, and there are a few reports of hemangioma with large phlebolith within the parotid gland. We herein report a case of it. Sialography may be a useful investigation method in the evaluation of radiopaque lesions localized intraglandularly in the parotid area to rule out the sialolith. Cavernous hemangioma with phleboliths should be included in the differential diagnosis of a swelling in the mandibular area.

Paraganglioma with unusual presentation in parotid gland: A diagnostic dilemma in fine needle aspiration.

Paragangliomas (PGLs) are uncommon tumors. Although PGLs are known to occur in the head and neck region, especially the carotid body, middle ear, and larynx, involvement of the parotid glands has not been reported. In this article, we report the fine needle aspiration features of tumor in an unusual location, presenting as a parotid gland mass, submitted to pathology for initial diagnosis. The clinical presentation, cytomorphology, and the immunohistochemical features for the diagnosis are described. To our knowledge, this is the first case of paraganglioma of the parotid gland reported in the

Early evaluation of radiation-induced parotid damage in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma by T2 mapping and mDIXON Quant imaging: initial findings.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced parotid damage is a common complication in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated with radiotherapy to head and neck region, which severely reduce the life quality of those patients. The aim of this study was to early evaluate the changes of irradiated parotid glands with T2 mapping and mDIXON Quant imaging. METHODS: Forty-one patients with NPC underwent conventional magnetic resonance imaging for nasopharynx and neck, and T2 mapping and mDIXON Quant imaging for bilateral parotid glands within 2 weeks before radiotherapy (pre-RT), 5 weeks after the
