Samples from concentrated aqueous solutions of β-lactam antibiotics were examined by gel filtration. The eluates were monitored by ultraviolet (uv) absorption and by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in guinea-pigs sensitized with appropriate antiserum raised in rabbits. The appearance of uv absorbing material, giving a positive PCA reaction, in fractions from the high molecular weight regions of the eluates from gel filtration of aged solutions was taken as evidence of antigenic polymer formation.

The new antirheumatic drugs Benzofenac and Flobufen were assessed for their possible influence on various immunological parameters. They were shown to enhance passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) to ovalbumin in rats and to suppress the numbers of helper and suppressor T-lymphocytes in mice. The effect of Benzofenac in the latter system was found to be more pronounced. The drugs had no effects in any of the other test systems, including the development of delayed hypersensitivity, mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation in vitro and the production of antisera (as tested by PCA).

Specific IgG and IgE antibodies against the mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) have been determined in the serum of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA), respectively. Immunization of rats with Dp produces a rapid increase of serum specific IgE antibody levels which decrease when specific IgG antibodies start rising. The results indicate that the SD rat is a good model to induce a humoral immune response to allergen Dp.

With the aim of applying mast cell-stabilizing agents as antiulcer agents, N-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2-anilino-5-pyrimidinecarboxamides were synthesized, and initially evaluated pharmacologically for activity in the rat passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test by oral administration. Rabbit antisera prepared against ficin reacted with it in a series of serologic tests. Upon immunodiffusion analysis, ficin was found to consist of at least nine antigenic components. Ficin will adsorb spontaneously to erythrocytes which can be used in passive hemagglutination tests. The enzymatic activity of ficin was not abolished by antificin sera.
