Systematic review of the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis patients of reproductive age: informing the 2024 update of the Japan College of Rheumatology clinical practice guidelines for the management of rheumatoid arthritis-secondary publication.

OBJECTIVES: To inform the 2024 updates of the Japanese College of Rheumatology clinical practice guidelines for the management of rheumatoid arthritis of the safety of maternal and paternal exposure to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). METHODS: We searched the databases of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the Japana Centra Revuo Medicina for articles published between 2019 and 2022 and combined them with our previous systematic review. Two independent reviewers screened articles, evaluated core outcomes, and performed meta-analyses for each clinical question. RESULTS: The rela…

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prenatal Risk Factors for Congenital Heart Disease: Part 1, Maternal Chronic Diseases and Parental Exposures.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable heterogeneity in studies on prenatal risk factors for congenital heart diseases (CHDs). We performed a meta-analysis of all nongenetic factors of CHDs. This report presents results of factors related to maternal chronic diseases and parental exposures. METHODS: A systematic search encompassing concepts of CHD and risk factors was used, using the following inclusion criteria: (1) original peer-reviewed articles, (2) quantifying the effects of risk factors for CHDs, (3) between 1989 and 2022. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calcul

Paternal Incarceration, Race and Ethnicity, and Maternal Health.

BACKGROUND: Although increased attention has been placed on the potential deleterious consequences of paternal incarceration on maternal health, little empirical research has attempted to understand the physiological processes that might underlie this relationship. Moreover, exposure to incarceration and access to resources that shape family incarceration patterns are unequally distributed across racial and ethnic lines, yet few studies utilize analytic frameworks that account for this social reality. Using a within race/ethnicity analytic framework, the present study addresses these gaps by e

Parental transgenerational epigenetic inheritance related to dietary crude oil exposure in Danio rerio.

Transgenerational inheritance from both parental lines can occur by genetic and epigenetic inheritance. Maternal effects substantially influ … osure to persistent environmental stressors in F1 offspring appear to be influenced by maternal and paternal exposure, potentially benefitting offspring populations to survive in challenging environments.

Parental exposure to medical radiation and neuroblastoma in offspring.

Previous studies have suggested an association between parental medical radiation exposure and increased incidence of certain childhood cancers. We investigated the relationship between medical radiation and risk of neuroblastoma in offspring using data from a North American case-control study. Cases were children diagnosed with neuroblastoma from 1 May 1992, to 30 April 1994, at Children's Cancer Group and Pediatric Oncology Group institutions throughout the United States and Canada. One matched control per case was selected using random-digit dialling. Telephone interviews were conducted wit

Changes occurred in the testes and DNA pattern of males wax moth (Galleria mellonella) first generation as a result of irradiation of their parents.

Nowadays, the sterile insect technique is broadly used as a pest control measure. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the alteration occurred in testes and DNA pattern as an effect of inherited sterility. Full grown pupae of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella were irradiated with 80 and 160 Gy of γ irradiation. The size of the testes was decreased by increasing of γ irradiation dose. Also, the size of the testes was decreased in F 1 males comparing with the size of the testes of both the parents and the untreated control. The effects of γ rays on the DNA patterns of adult

From father to son: transgenerational effect of tetracycline on sperm viability.

The broad-spectrum antibiotic tetracycline is used in animal production, antimicrobial therapy, and for curing arthropods infected with bacterial endosymbionts such as Wolbachia. Tetracycline inhibits mitochondrial translation, and recent evidence indicates that male reproductive traits may be particularly sensitive to this antibiotic. Here, we report the first multi-generation investigation of tetracycline's effects on ejaculate traits. In a study of the pseudoscorpion, Cordylochernes scorpioides, in which siblings were randomly assigned to control and tetracycline treatments across replicate

Uncovering parental exposure risks of TCPP: Impaired development and metabolic homeostasis in zebrafish offspring.

As brominated flame retardants are phased out, tris (1‑chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), a phosphorus-based flame retardant, has emerged as a prominent detectable flame retardant in the environment. However, TCPP has been found to exhibit endocrine-disrupting effects on organisms, raising significant safety concerns. In our study, we utilized the zebrafish model to explore the toxic effects of parental TCPP exposure on offspring and uncover its regulatory mechanisms through metabolomics analysis. Moreover, the impact on the nervous system and lipid metabolism was examined through behavioral a

Prenatal exposure to androgen excess increases LH pulse amplitude during postnatal life in male sheep.

Prenatal exposure to excess testosterone has a profound impact on reproductive and metabolic functions in young and adult female sheep. Nevertheless, few studies have addressed the impact of prenatal exposure to an excess of androgens on reproductive and metabolic functions in males. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of prenatal exposure to an excess of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone on the luteinizing hormone (LH) pulse characteristics during sexual development in male sheep. Control male sheep (C-males) and males born to mothers exposed to twice weekly injections of

Parental occupational lead exposure and low birth weight.

This study suggests that paternal occupational lead exposure may be associated with low birth weight in the offspring. The odds of low birth weight rose fivefold among infants of fathers who were potentially exposed to high levels of lead during the period 6 months before pregnancy to the end of pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 4.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1-20). This effect was most prominent for low-birth-weight infants who were both preterm and small for gestational age. There was a suggestion of a gradual increase of the odds of low birth weight at medium levels of exposure,

Paternal serum dioxin and reproductive outcomes among veterans of Operation Ranch Hand.

We studied whether paternal exposure to Agent Orange and its dioxin contaminant (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) during the Vietnam War is related to adverse reproductive outcomes after service in Southeast Asia. The index cohort comprises conceptions and children of veterans of Operation Ranch Hand, the unit responsible for aerial spraying of herbicides in Vietnam from 1962 to 1971. The comparison cohort comprises conceptions and children of Air Force veterans who served in Southeast Asia during the same period but who were not involved with spraying herbicides. We found no meaningful el…

Risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia following parental occupational exposure to pesticides.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether there was an association between parental occupational exposure to pesticides and increased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in the offspring. METHOD: A population-based case-control study of childhood ALL was conducted in Australia. Information about the occupational pesticide exposure of mothers and fathers was collected using job-specific modules. Information on the types and extent of pesticide exposure was collected for mothers and fathers before and around the time of conception, and also for mothers during pregnancy for the index case or contr

Mercury exposure and its effects on fertility and pregnancy outcome.

Mercury (Hg), a highly toxic environmental pollutant, shows harmfulness which still represents a big concern for human health, including hazards to fertility and pregnancy outcome. Research has shown that Hg could induce impairments in the reproductive function, cellular deformation of the Leydig cells and the seminiferous tubules, and testicular degeneration as well as abnormal menstrual cycles. Some studies investigated spontaneous abortion and complicated fertility outcome due to occupational Hg exposure. Moreover, there is a relation between inhaled Hg vapour and reproductive outcome. This

Is maternal smoking more determinant than paternal smoking on the respiratory symptoms of young children?

BACKGROUND: It is generally accepted that maternal smoking has more detrimental effects than paternal smoking on the respiratory health of children. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of postnatal exposure due to the smoking behaviour by father and mother in the home, and prenatal exposure from maternal smoking during pregnancy, on the respiratory symptoms in children. METHODS: The parents of 484 children, aged 3-6 years, completed a questionnaire about smoking and respiratory symptoms in children. Bivariate and logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associat

Preconception Chronic Intermittent Ethanol Exposure Impacts Offspring Transcriptomes with Sex and Tissue Specific Effects.

Alcohol use disorder demonstrates ~50% heritability, much of which remains unexplained by genetic sequence alone. Chronic alcohol exposure before conception changes offspring phenotypes through epigenetic mechanisms that are still being elucidated. Preconception ethanol exposure studies have focused on paternal exposure, neglecting maternal and biparental exposure. To address this, we exposed adult male and female mice to five cycles of chronic intermittent ethanol vapor interleaved with two bottle choice ethanol drinking and mated them to produce male and female F1 offspring with paternal, ma…
