"Hearing faces and seeing voices": Amodal coding of person identity in the human brain.

Recognizing familiar individuals is achieved by the brain by combining cues from several sensory modalities, including the face of a person and her voice. Here we used functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) and a whole-brain, searchlight multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to search for areas in which local fMRI patterns could result in identity classification as a function of sensory modality. We found several areas supporting face or voice stimulus classification based on fMRI responses, consistent with previous reports; the classification maps overlapped across modalities in a single area of

Breakdown of holistic face processing with vertical displacement: A consequence of disrupted perceptual grouping, not biological implausibility.

Holistic processing is a fast, efficient, and seemingly effortless processing style typically linked with perceiving faces and objects of expertise-where observers appear unable to selectively attend to features within a stimulus. Holistic face processing is disrupted when the top and bottom halves are vertically separated by a substantial amount. This was attributed to the biological implausibility of the elongated faces-a domain-specific explanation. However, more recent findings of face-like holistic processing of stimuli with strong perceptual grouping cues suggest that such cues support h

Hominoid-specific sulcal variability is related to face perception ability.

The relationship among brain structure, brain function, and behavior is of major interest in neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and psychology. This relationship is especially intriguing when considering hominoid-specific brain structures because they cannot be studied in widely examined models in neuroscience such as mice, marmosets, and macaques. The fusiform gyrus (FG) is a hominoid-specific structure critical for face processing that is abnormal in individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DPs)-individuals who have severe deficits recognizing the faces of familiar people in the absenc

Perirhinal cortex lesions that impair object recognition memory spare landmark discriminations.

Rats with lesions in the perirhinal cortex and their control group learnt to discriminate between mirror-imaged visual landmarks to find a submerged platform in a watermaze. Rats initially learnt this discrimination passively, in that they were repeatedly placed on the platform in one corner of a square watermaze with walls of different appearance, prior to swimming to that same location for the first time in a subsequent probe trial. Perirhinal cortex lesions spared this passively learnt ability, despite the common visual elements shared by the guiding landmarks. These results challenge model

Visual Sensitivities in Toddlers' Hands Provide a Foundation for Shape Perception.

Human competencies in object recognition and category generalization implicate representations of the 3D geometry of objects. There is no accepted account of how such object-centric representations are formed. Toddlers' manual and visual exploration of objects is strongly associated with their emerging abilities in object recognition and category generalization, although there is limited understanding of the processes that underlie this association. Building on Marr and Nishihara's seminal theory of shape, we proposed (1) that toddlers actively select views that optimize fundamental visual sen

Beyond visual integration: sensitivity of the temporal-parietal junction for objects, places, and faces.

One important role of the TPJ is the contribution to perception of the global gist in hierarchically organized stimuli where individual elements create a global visual percept. However, the link between clinical findings in simultanagnosia and neuroimaging in healthy subjects is missing for real-world global stimuli, like visual scenes. It is well-known that hierarchical, global stimuli activate TPJ regions and that simultanagnosia patients show deficits during the recognition of hierarchical stimuli and real-world visual scenes. However, the role of the TPJ in real-world scene processing is e

From word superiority to word inferiority: visual processing of letters and words in pure alexia.

Visual processing and naming of individual letters and short words were investigated in four patients with pure alexia. To test processing at different levels, the same stimuli were studied across a naming task and a visual perception task. The normal word superiority effect was eliminated in both tasks for all patients, and this pattern was more pronounced in the more severely affected patients. The relationship between performance with single letters and words was, however, not straightforward: One patient performed within the normal range on the letter perception task, while being severely

Neural oscillations and top-down connectivity are modulated by object-scene congruency.

The knowledge we have about how the world is structured is known to influence object recognition. One way this is demonstrated is through a congruency effect, where object recognition is faster and more accurate if items are presented in expected scene contexts. However, our understanding of the dynamic neural mechanisms that underlie congruency effects are under-explored. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we examine how the congruency between an object and a prior scene results in changes in the oscillatory activity in the brain, which regions underpin this effect, and whether congruency re

Contrast and pattern adaptation in visual cortex share a common gain control mechanism.

Neuronal populations in primary visual cortex adapt both to stimulus contrast and to the probability of occurrence of visual patterns. Previous work showed that the magnitude of the population response follows a separable power-law function of contrast and stimulus probability, suggesting the existence of a shared gain mechanism. Here we ask whether a similar equivalence extends beyond response magnitude to the full distribution of activity across neurons within a trial. Across a wide range of adaptation states, we find that population responses are highly sparse and well described by a zero-i

How odgcrnwi becomes crowding: stimulus-specific learning reduces crowding.

Processes underlying crowding in visual letter recognition were examined by investigating effects of training. Experiment 1 revealed that training reduces crowding mainly for trained strings. This was corroborated in Experiment 2, where no training effects were obvious after 3 days of training when strings changed from trial to trial. Experiment 3 specified that after a short amount of training, learning effects remained specific to trained strings and also to the trained retinal eccentricity and the interletter spacing used in training. Transfer to other than trained conditions was observed o

Unveiling the content of frontal feedback in challenging object recognition.

Object recognition under challenging real-world conditions, including partial occlusion, remains an enduring focus of investigation in cognitive visual neuroscience. This study addresses the insufficiently elucidated neural mechanisms and temporal dynamics involved in this complex process, concentrating on the persistent challenge of recognizing objects obscured by occlusion. Through the analysis of human EEG data, we decode feedback characteristics within frontotemporal networks, uncovering intricate neural mechanisms during occlusion coding, with a specific emphasis on processing complex sti

Conceptual and perceptual chunking of real-world objects in visual working memory.

We investigated the impact of chunking on visual working memory (VWM) capacity and explored whether its benefits depend on the overlap between studied objects and retrieval probes. Informed by Fuzzy Trace Theory, we examined whether chunking real-world objects is a fully gist-reliant process or whether it preserves coarse- or fine-grained visual detail. To test this, participants completed four experiments involving object pairs that varied in conceptual and/or perceptual similarity. At test, they judged whether a probe was an "old" (studied) or "novel" (unseen) item. Some distractors were "re

Characterizing the discriminability of visual categorical information in strongly connected voxels.

Functional brain responses are strongly influenced by connectivity. Recently, we demonstrated a major example of this: category discriminability within occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) is enhanced for voxel sets that share strong functional connectivity to distal brain areas, relative to those that share lesser connectivity. That is, within OTC regions, sets of 'most-connected' voxels show improved multivoxel pattern discriminability for tool-, face-, and place stimuli relative to voxels with weaker connectivity to the wider brain. However, understanding whether these effects generalize to other

Inter-letter spacing, inter-word spacing, and font with dyslexia-friendly features: testing text readability in people with and without dyslexia.

Over the last years, several studies have suggested a possible link between dyslexia and deficits in low-level visual processing (e.g., excessive crowding). At the same time, specially designed "dyslexia-friendly" fonts appeared on the market. This class of fonts presents two main features: the particular graphic characteristics of the letterform designed to avoid confusion between similarly shaped letters, and wider inter-letter and inter-word spacing to limit crowding. The literature testing the efficacy of "dyslexia-friendly" fonts in improving reading accuracy and increasing reading speed

Object comparison in the lateral intraparietal area.

We can search for and locate specific objects in our environment by looking for objects with similar features. Object recognition involves stimulus similarity responses in ventral visual areas and task-related responses in prefrontal cortex. We tested whether neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) of posterior parietal cortex could form an intermediary representation, collating information from object-specific similarity map representations to allow general decisions about whether a stimulus matches the object being looked for. We hypothesized that responses to stimuli would correlate

Brief report: the relationship between visual acuity, the embedded figures test and systemizing in autism spectrum disorders.

Enhanced performance upon the Embedded Figures Test (EFT) in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has informed psychological theories of the non-social aspects that characterise ASD. The Extreme Male Brain theory of autism proposes that enhanced visual acuity underpins greater attention to detail (assessed by the EFT) which is a prerequisite for Systemizing. To date, however, no study has empirically examined these relationships. 13 males with ASD and 13 male controls were assessed upon tasks argued to reflect these levels of processing. The ASD group were found to have significantl

Agnosia for object orientation: naming and mental rotation evidence.

We have previously reported the performance of a patient (NL) who could recognize objects, but appeared to lack knowledge of their orientation. These results were interpreted as evidence that NL had isolated access to a viewpoint-independent (ventral stream) object recognition system. However, because NL's responses on naming tasks were not timed, it was not possible to establish whether he showed the same pattern of reaction time performance generally accepted as evidence of a 'mental rotation' strategy in neurologically normal subjects. Here we report NL's performance on two reaction time ta

Pattern electroretinography (PERG) and an integrated approach to visual pathway diagnosis.

The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) provides an objective measure of central retinal function, and has become an important element of the author's clinical visual electrophysiological practice. The PERG contains two main components, a positivity at approximately 50ms (P50) and a larger negativity at approximately 95ms (N95). The P50 component is affected by macular dysfunction with concomitant reduction in N95. The PERG therefore complements the Ganzfeld ERG in the assessment of patients with retinal disease. In contrast, the ganglion cell origins of the N95 component allow electrophysiologic

Object recognition difficulty in visual apperceptive agnosia.

Two patients with visual apperceptive agnosia were examined on tasks assessing the appreciation of visual material. Elementary visual functioning was relatively preserved, but they had profound difficulty recognizing and naming line drawings. More detailed evaluation revealed accurate recognition of regular geometric shapes and colors, but performance deteriorated when the shapes were made more complex visually, when multiple-choice arrays contained larger numbers of simple targets and foils, and when a mental manipulation such as a rotation was required. The recognition of letters and words w
