Pericardial tuberculosis is a specific pericarditis which is rarely reported in the absence of pulmonary tuberculosis. A case history is presented of a 74-year-old patient, immunocompromised as a result of kidney and liver cancer therapy. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was repeatedly recovered from pericardial effusion but not from other clinical specimens. Despite the early treatment of specific pericarditis, the patient died.

A case of chronic constrictive pericarditis of probable tuberculous origin in a middle-aged white male is discussed. The localization of calcium was unusual in that it was confined to a thick band encircling the ventricles and extending into adjacent myocardium 2 cm caudal to the atrioventricular groove. The pathogenesis, clinical and surgical indications for operation, and the prognosis are considered, together with a discussion of operative techniques employed.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Tuberculosis (TB) pericarditis, while uncommon, should be considered in patients with pericardial masses and effusion. Timely recognition and treatment with anti-TB medications are crucial for a successful outcome.
ABSTRACT: TB pericarditis presenting as a pericardial mass is an unusual and rare manifestation of this disease. We report a 59-year-old South Asian male who presented with a 1-week history of dyspnea and cough. He was found to have a hemorrhagic pericardial mass with a massive pericardial effusion. Pleural fluid analysis was positive for TB. The patient was s

Acute hemopericardium is generally produced by complications of interventional procedures or traumatisms to the chest wall. In absence of those antecedents, clinicians face an arduous process of etiological diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of a male patient with history of Hodgkin's lymphoma and aortic endovascular treatment years ago, who develop an episode of fever, chest pain and dyspnea that was complicated with cardiac tamponade diagnosed with echocardiogram and angio- tomography. In the operating room hemopericardium was diagnosed and drained with resolution of symptoms. Diag

Tuberculous pericarditis is a rare but important cause of constrictive pericarditis in developed countries, while remaining a significant public health concern in endemic regions. Myocardial involvement is uncommon and often underrecognized. A previously healthy 47-year-old man presented with a five-year history of progressive bilateral lower-limb edema and exertional dyspnea, with marked deterioration over the last five months, including severe fatigue and involuntary weight loss of 8 kg. On admission, imaging revealed biventricular systolic dysfunction, pericardial thickening with calcificat

BACKGROUND: Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma (PMPM) is a highly malignant tumor originating in the pericardium serosum with clinical manifestations presenting as constrictive pericarditis, with pericardial tamponade and heart failure. Malignant pericardial mesothelioma is rare and has a poor prognosis, with an average survival time of 6-10 months.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein, we report the case of a 57-year-old female who developed chest tightness and panic for no obvious reason. She was diagnosed with tuberculous pericarditis via multiple examinations including positron emission tomog

Chronic constrictive pericarditis still poses diagnostic and therapeutic problems. A series of 84 cases (59 men-25 women; men age: 46 years) operated between 1979 and 1989 at the Pitié Hospital was reviewed. The majority of patients (72%) were in functional Classes III or IV; 88% had clinical signs of right ventricular failure and 18% had anasarca. The average duration of symptoms before diagnosis was 20 months. Chest X-ray showed pericardial calcification in 40% of cases. A characteristic dip-plateau pressure tracing was obtained in 76% of cases. A specific aetiology was only found in 36 case

The fungi in the order Mucorales commonly target immunocompromised hosts, especially diabetics and produce fulminating respiratory and/or central nervous system infections, which are often fatal. We report primary zygomycotic pericarditis accompanied by osteomyelitis of the sternum in an immunocompetent female: a rare site and a rare setting. The disease was clinically thought to be of tuberculous aetiology and had evaded diagnosis for a year.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affects the lungs but can involve other organs, termed extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Tuberculous pericarditis (TBP) is a rare form, representing approximately 1% of tuberculosis-related autopsies and 4% of acute pericarditis cases in developed countries.
CASE SUMMARY: A 29-year-old healthy Indian man presented with fever, night sweats, and weight loss. Imaging revealed a large pericardial effusion with tamponade physiology. He underwent pericardiocentesis and a surgical pericardial window, with biopsy confirming M. tuber

Recurrent pericarditis is a complex and often debilitating clinical entity characterized by repeated episodes of pericardial inflammation following an initial acute insult. The condition poses a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, as its underlying causes span a wide spectrum of etiologies, including autoimmune disorders (such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis), infectious processes (notably viral, bacterial, or tuberculous), neoplastic involvement, and a growing recognition of autoinflammatory mechanisms. While the majority of recurrent pericarditis cases

During a two-year period (2001-2003), 464 patients were treated for tuberculosis at Jordanovac Department for Lung Diseases in Croatia. Besides pulmonary tuberculosis in 97.7% of patients, patients were also treated for tuberculous pleurisy (0.9%), tuberculous laryngitis (0.6%), tuberculous meningitis (0.2%), tuberculous pericarditis (0.2%) and urogenital tuberculosis (0.4%). Out of the total number of patients, 57.3% declared themselves to be active smokers (men were predominant and made up to 80.8%) and 20.9% to be active alcohol consumers. Both risk factors, i.e. smoking and alcohol consump

UNLABELLED: Pericardial diseases are common in clinical practice and may occur in isolation or form part of systemic disease. The clinical presentation of patients with pericardial disease is dependent on multiple factors, including the rate and volume of pericardial fluid accumulation, chronicity of the inflammatory process, and the degree of pericardial fibrosis and calcification. Cardiac tamponade and pericardial constriction are life-threatening sequelae of pericardial diseases, occurring in the acute and chronic stages, respectively. The management of pericardial diseases is multidiscipli

Tuberculosis can present at various extrapulmonary sites. However, even in endemic countries, concomitant involvement of different sites in the same patient is rarely reported. Further, tuberculous pericarditis represents a fraction of all tuberculosis infections and is an uncommon form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. In underdeveloped nations, it is the most frequent cause of massive pericardial effusion. Additionally, it is the most common cause of constrictive pericarditis in adults, which has a high death rate and a poor prognosis. Furthermore, concomitant pleural effusion due to Mycobacte

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, etiology, management, and outcomes of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and pericarditis
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The authors retrospectively reviewed the records of 81 patients who were diagnosed of SLE according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria and had 82 episodes of pericarditis between 2002 and 2010. The diagnosis of pericarditis was defined as the presence of pericardial effusion alone by echocardiography or having 2 out of 4 of the following criteria: retrosternal pain, pericardial friction rub,

A 63-year-old woman had persistent bloody pericardial effusion. Tuberculous pericarditis was initially suspected, but empirical antituberculosis therapy was futile. FDG PET/CT study revealed abnormal FDG activity in multiple parts of the pericardium, especially along with aorta and main pulmonary artery, and in the left atrium. However, there was no abnormal activity in other parts of the body. Histopathologic examination revealed primary pericardial angiosarcoma.

Tuberculosis is a leading cause of massive pericardial effusion and tamponade especially in underdeveloped and developing countries. Hypothyroidism is also associated with pericardial effusion with rare progression to tamponade. We present a case of pericardial tamponade who diagnosed as both tuberculosis and myxedema at admission. Urgent pericardiocentesis performed as an initial therapy and four-agents antituberculous and thyroxine replacement therapy started immediately as long-term management. Coexistance of tuberculosis and myxedema is a rare condition and they can cause tamponade formati

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: We retrospectively analysed 56 consecutive patients with a confirmed diagnosis of chronic constrictive pericarditis over a period of 23 years. The objective was to analyse the evolution of the annual frequency of constrictive pericarditis, its aetiology and to define the prognostic factors for mortality.
RESULTS: The annual frequency of constrictive pericarditis has not diminished over the 23 years of this study, remaining at 2.4 cases per year. Cases with a tuberculous origin have diminished progressively, being replaced by complications of cardiac surgery and mediastin

The diagnosis of tuberculous pericarditis is difficult. The cultures of the pericardial fluid for M.tuberculosis are often negative. The determination of ADA activity in pleural fluid in TB patients /PTS/ is very useful. It seemed reasonable to measure ADA activity in pericardial effusion. ADA activity in pericardial fluid of 40PTS/19 women and 21 men/with large pericardial effusion of different etiologies who were treated in our institute in years 1988-1995 was investigated. The median age was 44 years. In each case the pericardiocentesis was performed. PTS were grouped as follows: group I-4
