Tonsillectomy as a risk factor of periodontitis: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether patients who had undergone tonsillectomy would have higher risks of postoperative periodontitis. METHODS: Data were collected from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Dataset from 1999 to 2013, a population-based cohort study consisting of cases of newly-onset sleep apnoea, chronic diseases of tonsils and adenoids, peritonsillar abscess, and periodontal diseases. A total of 1482 tonsillectomy cases and 14,796 non-tonsillectomy controls were selected. Propensity score matching37 between the tonsillectomy group and the non-tonsillectomy group was conducted

Hard palate abscess and nasopalatine fistula as a result of impacted tooth in jaw − case report.

Impacted teeth are one of causes of patients visits to maxillofacial surgeons or dental surgeons. They are often detected accidentally when diagnosing other diseases in area of the nose, paranasal sinuses or oral cavity. This paper presents the process of diagnostics and treatment of a rare case of a 53-year-old patient, who developed hard palate abscess as a result of caries of impacted tooth accompanied by lateral periodontal cyst and nasopalatine fistula located in jaw.

Severe cystic periventricular leukomalacia in a premature infant with capnocytophaga sepsis.

Capnocytophaga is an opportunistic gram-negative anaerobic bacillus found in the oropharyngeal cavity of mammals and is associated with periodontal disease in humans. Sepsis, osteomyelitis, lung abscess, endocarditis, and meningitis have been reported in humans following animal bites. Perinatal infection with Capnocytophaga is infrequent and is generally considered to have a low risk of morbidity to the mother and fetus. We report a case of neonatal Capnocytophaga sepsis associated with the development of severe cystic periventricular leukomalacia.

Pulpal disease and bursts of periodontal attachment loss.

Progression of periodontitis is currently thought to occur during bursts of activity, followed by periods of remission, when healing may occur. This concept contrasts with the older hypothesis that periodontitis was continuously, but slowly, progressive throughout life. At present, there is no proof of the conventional (microbiological) hypothesis which gives a major role to site-specific bacteria in the initiation of bursts of attachment loss. An alternative hypothesis is presented in this paper which accounts for periodontal attachment loss by pathways that are independent of plaque. Severe

Extranodal diffuse large B cell lymphoma of maxillary sinus presenting as a palatal ulcer.

A multitude of disease processes ranging from periodontitis to malignancies can lead to formation of solitary ulcer on the palate. Hence solitary ulcers of palate can often be a challenging one to diagnose. We report an interesting case of a diffuse large B cell lymphoma of the maxillary sinus which perforated the palatal bone and presented clinically as a palatal ulcer. Initially the lesion manifested as a small ill-defined swelling in the posterior palatal slope in relation to 24and25 which were mobile and hence was erroneously diagnosed as chronic periodontal abscess. This paper is intended…

Osteosarcoma of the mandible mimicking an odontogenic abscess: a case report and review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: Inflammatory lesions, like periapical/odontogenic abscesses, are by far the most common pathologic condition of the jaws. Radiographically, these lesions commonly manifest as widening of periodontal ligament space, discontinuity of lamina dura and ill-defined periapical radiolucency. There are some rare disorders which could cause similar radiographic changes in the jaw bone. With careful scrutiny of periapical radiolucency, regular periodic follow-up radiographs and histo-pathologic examination, the periapical abscess or infection can be differentiated from rare fatal disorders.

Importance of early recognition and intervention in Ludwig's angina by emergency medicine physicians to prevent life-threatening complications.

BACKGROUND: Ludwig's angina is a life-threatening cellulitis that can easily progress to airway compromise. Significant infection, often from periodontal abscesses of the molar teeth, may cause superior and posterior displacement of the tongue compromising patient's airways if not identified and treated promptly. Early recognition and clinical diagnosis, with or without imaging and blood cultures, and antibiotic treatment can help prevent rapid airway compromise, systemic infection and Le Mierre's disease (a rare life-threatening complication). Given that emergency departments are often the fi…

Management of Acute Periodontal Conditions-The EFP S2k Level Clinical Practice Guideline.

BACKGROUND: The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has developed Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for the treatment of periodontitis and for the management of peri-implant diseases. In accordance with the 2018 Classification, acute periodontal conditions are characterised by rapid-onset pain or discomfort, tissue destruction and infection. Therefore, the development of a CPG to guide patients and clinicians in their management is justified. AIM: To develop an S2k-level CPG for the management of acute periodontal conditions, necrotising periodontal diseases, periodontal abscesses a…

Horizontal/oblique root fractures in the palatal root of maxillary molars with associated periodontal destruction: case reports.

AIM: To report two cases of palatal root fracture in maxillary molars that were successfully managed in the short term by root canal treatment and root amputation. SUMMARY: In the first case, a 48-year-old woman with bony destruction and a deep periodontal pocket on the palatal root of tooth 26 (FDI) underwent root canal treatment. Bleeding into the palatal canal and radiolucent lines over the root suggested a fracture. Further evidence was provided by an electronic apex locator. Subsequent surgery confirmed the presence of a horizontal root fracture and the fractured root was removed. In the

The role of cytokines in a Porphyromonas gingivalis-induced murine abscess model.

INTRODUCTION: Porphyromonas gingivalis is an important periodontopathic bacterium that is strongly associated with periodontal disease and is part of human dental plaque. Periodontal disease results from the interaction of the host with bacterial products, and T-cell-derived cytokines remain critical in the immunoregulation of periodontal disease. METHODS: The aim of this study was to examine the role of T helper type 1 [interleukin-12p40 (IL-12p40), interferon-gamma, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)] and type 2 (IL-4, IL-10) cytokines in the immune response to a subcutaneous challenge with P. gi

Odontogenic abscesses in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) of Cayo Santiago.

OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic abscesses are one of the most common dental diseases causing maxillofacial skeletal lesions. They affect the individ … born in later periods. DISCUSSION: These results suggest that oral pathologies, such as dental and periodontal abscesses in rhesus macaques are fairly common, which may indicate familial effects interwoven with ecological and social factors. The closeness of the rhesus and human genomes allows insights to understand of the epidemiology of these diseases in the human …

Patent foramen ovale as a possible risk factor for cryptogenic brain abscess: report of two cases.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been suggested as a potential source of paradoxical embolism. A higher prevalence of PFO in ischemic stroke of unexplained cause has been recognized. Brain abscesses are commonly associated with a contiguous focus of infection, hematogenous spread from a distant focus, or cranial trauma. However, no predisposing factors, including a distant focus with unknown cause, are identified in approximately 15 to 30% of reported cases. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We encountered two patients with brain abscess presumably caused by dental infections. Bo

Genome Sequence of Parvimonas micra Strain A293, Isolated from an Abdominal Abscess from a Patient in the United Kingdom.

Parvimonas micra is an important oral microbe that has the ability to grow and proliferate within oral biofilms and is involved in periodontal disease, leading to gingival bleeding, gingival recession, alveolar bone loss, and tooth mobility. However, occasionally these normally oral pathogens can cause infections at other sites in the body. We present the genome sequence of Parvimonas micra strain A293, a smooth Parvimonas micra strain isolated from an abdominal abscess from a patient at Barts Hospital, London, United Kingdom.

Detection and genetic characterization of β-lactamases in Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens isolated from oral cavity infections and peritonsillar abscesses.

A prospective analysis on β-lactam resistance mechanisms and β-lactamase prevalence was conducted on Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens recovered from patients with chronic periodontitis and peritonsillar abscesses. Both phenotypic and genotypic methods were performed to characterize the β-lactamases, their coding genes and their genetic contexts. Overall, β-lactamase production was observed in 64% (16/25) P. intermedia and 23.8% (5/21) P. nigrescens (p < 0.01). Besides higher β-lactamase production rates were observed in P. intermedia (8/16) than in P. nigrescens (2/16) recovered

Direct detection of Prevotella intermedia and P. nigrescens in suppurative oral infection by amplification of 16S rRNA gene.

A specific 16S rDNA PCR and subsequent hybridisation reaction was designed to discriminate between strains of Prevotella intermedia (n = 15) and P. nigrescens (n = 15). This technique was then used to detect the presence of these two bacterial species in acute suppurative oral infection. A total of 36 pus samples aspirated from 26 peri-apical abscesses, three root canals, three periodontal abscesses, two cases of refractory periodontitis, one cyst and one haematoma was examined. A portion of the pus sample was processed by PCR and the remainder of the specimen was subjected to routine culture.…
