Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis commonly arises from touch contamination events, however, it is important to be mindful of alternative etiologies and to take a detailed history and perform a root cause analysis for each episode. In fact, the PD effluent can be a window into intra-abdominal pathologies which may require surgical management. We present an unusual case of secondary enteric peritonitis due to foreign body bowel perforation from ingestion of a fish bone.

Although peritonitis is highly prevalent in cattle, there have been only limited studies on the pathology of this condition. We describe the gross and histological aspects of primary and secondary peritonitis in cattle based on necropsy reports of 46 cases. Twenty-six were female (26/46; 56.5%) and 24 male (24/46; 43.5%), 31 (31/46; 67.4%) beef breed and 15 (15/46; 32.6%) dairy breed. Twenty were 0-12 months old (20/46; 43.5%), nine were 13-36 months old (9/46; 19.6%) and 15 were >36 months old (15/46; 32.6%). Two were of unknown age. Primary peritoneal tuberculosis (PT) was present in 7/46 ca…

This comprehensive review aims to provide a practical guide for intensivists, focusing on enhancing patient care associated with nosocomial peritonitis (NP). It explores the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of NP, a significant contributor to the mortality of surgical patients worldwide. NP is, per definition, a hospital-acquired condition and a consequence of gastrointestinal surgery or a complication of other diseases. NP, one of the most prevalent causes of sepsis in surgical Intensive Care Units (ICUs), is often associated with multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria and high mortality …

The biological models used in the study of generalized peritonitis can be subdivided into 5 groups (introduction of foreign bodies, cultures of microorganisms, suspensions of feces, chemicals, and mechanical damage to the gastrointestinal tract) or into 4 groups (introduction of foreign bodies, chemicals, bacterial contamination of the abdominal cavity, and combined methods). After analysis of published reports, the most justified classification of methods of peritonitis modelling is based on the type of peritonitis-inducing agent and the administration route and on the nature of peritonitis d…

• Meconium peritonitis is an inflammatory peritonitis due to the discharge of meconium into the peritoneal cavity secondary to perforation of the fetal intestine. • It is accessible to antenatal diagnosis by obstetrical ultrasound. The clinical picture is not very specific. Simple abdominal radiography can help in the diagnosis. • It is a serious pathology whose prognosis depends on early management. • The unfavorable prognosis stems from complications as the rupture of huge abdominal cystic formations, formation of ascites that can cause fetal heart failure, and progression to rapidly evolvin…

Colon ascendens stent peritonitis (CASP) is one of the well-established models of experimental abdominal sepsis. In CASP surgery, an open link between the gut lumen and the abdominal cavity is created by placing a stent into the colon ascendens. This mimics well the insufficient intestinal anastomosis. It causes a continuous leakage of the gut contents into the peritoneum and leads therefore to peritonitis and sepsis. The abdominal cavity is opened under general anesthesia and a plastic stent is located through and sutured to the colonic wall. The septic severity in CASP models can be titrated…

Biliary peritonitis is a growing concern in the canine patient and a thorough understanding of the disease will lead to better treatment outcomes. This article reviews the human and veterinary literature pertaining to biliary peritonitis including both scientific reviews and original publications. Compared to human medicine, biliary peritonitis can be difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Multiple risk factors exist increasing the likelihood of development of biliary peritonitis. Treatment recommendations center on stabilization, surgical cholecystectomy, and postoperative supportive care. Cli…

Meconium peritonitis is a sterile chemical peritonitis preceded by bowel perforation, resulting in meconium leakage and subsequent inflammatory cascade within the peritoneal cavity. The presentation can range from simple failure of the neonate to pass meconium to complications such as persistent pulmonary hypertension, lung hypoplasia, and systemic inflammatory syndrome. The purpose of this article is to review a case of meconium peritonitis while considering its etiology, diagnosis, management, and multidisciplinary team care.

Primary peritonitis is a rare phenomenon in modern antibiotic era. A case of pediatric primary peritonitis is presented here, in which a child presented with complaints of abdominal pain, vomiting for one day. Abdominal examination showed marked tenderness and guarding, diagnosis of appendicitis was made and laparoscopic appendectomy done. Later, ascitic fluid analysis and appendix histopathology proved it to be a case of primary peritonitis.

Barium peritonitis is extremely rare, but is difficult to treat and may be life-threatening. Barium suspension leakage from the gastrointestinal tract into the abdominal cavity has a time-dependent and synergistically deleterious effect in patients who have generalized bacterial peritonitis. The severity of barium peritonitis is dependent on the quantity of barium in the abdominal cavity. Barium sulfate leakage results in hypovolemia and hypoproteinemia by worsening the exudation of extracellular fluid and albumin. Abdominal fluid analysis is a useful and efficient method to diagnose barium pe…

Pediatric Spontaneous Bile duct perforation is a rare clinical condition with only around 150 cases reported worldwide. Early management gives excellent prognosis but the condition often presents a diagnostic dilemma. Hepato-biliary Technetium-99m-iminodiacetic acid scintiscan is the diagnostic investigation of choice but its availability in third world countries is limited. We present two cases of spontaneous biliary peritonitis in children, which were diagnosed without scintiscanning. The first case was a one-and -a half-year-old child, who was diagnosed with biliary peritonitis without pneu…

Despite a decreasing incidence, peritonitis remains an important cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD) technique failure and transfer to hemodialysis. Infection with Serratia spp. has been suggested to be associated with a poor technique outcome in PD. We examined the data at our center to see if patients with Serratia peritonitis had a similar poor outcome. In this retrospective study, we reviewed all PD patients who presented at our center with peritonitis from January 1996 to December 2003. The case records of patients in whom the infecting organism was identified as Serratia were evaluated. We…

Pasteurella multocida has been reported to cause peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis after a cat bite or scratch to the catheter. We report a teenager with hamster bite peritonitis caused by P. aerogenes, an organism predominantly isolated from swine.
