Concurrent validity of the Swedish version of the life-space assessment questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: The Life-Space Assessment (LSA), developed in the USA, is an instrument focusing on mobility with respect to reaching different areas defined as life-spaces, extending from the room where the person sleeps to mobility outside one's hometown. A newly translated Swedish version of the LSA (LSA-S) has been tested for test-retest reliability, but the validity remains to be tested. The purpose of the present study was to examine the concurrent validity of the LSA-S, by comparing and correlating the LSA scores to other measures of mobility. METHOD: The LSA was included in a population-b

The association between objectively measured physical activity and life-space mobility among older people.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between objectively measured physical activity and life-space mobility in community-dwelling older people. Life-space refers to the spatial area a person purposefully moves through in daily life (bedroom, home, yard, neighborhood, town, and beyond) and life-space mobility to the frequency of travel and the help needed when moving through different life-space areas. The study population comprised community-living 75- to 90-year-old people {n = 174; median age 79.7 [interquartile range (IQR) 7.1]}, participating in the

Same space, different place: Human rights violations, political violence, deprivation and mental health in Palestinian refugee camps and the urban socio-spatial environment of the West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory.

Palestinian refugee camps in the occupied West Bank share the same geographic space as adjacent urban neighbourhoods but remain socially, politically and institutionally distinct. This study examined whether refugee camp residence is associated with greater exposure to human rights violations, political violence, deprivation and poorer mental health. A cross-sectional survey of 3000 Palestinian adults was conducted in 2025 across three refugee camps and neighbouring urban areas. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted. Overall, 77.1% reported at least one human rights violation, 91.7%

Prevalence of hydrogen cyanide and carboxyhaemoglobin in victims of smoke inhalation during enclosed-space fires: a combined toxicological risk.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is one of the most toxic components of fire smoke, but insufficient attention is paid to its potential role as a cause of injury or death in victims (alive or dead) of enclosed-space fires. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the prevalence of toxic HCN exposure in fire victims and factors that may influence its toxicity, particularly the co-presence of carbon monoxide (CO) and ethanol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples from fire victims and persons rescued from fires were analysed. RESULTS: A positive result for HCN (mean concentration 16.83 mg/l) was detected in bl

The Influence of the Encoding Modality on Spatial Navigation for Sighted and Late-Blind People.

People usually rely on sight to encode spatial information, becoming aware of other sensory cues when deprived of vision. In the absence of vision, it has been demonstrated that physical movements and spatial descriptions can effectively provide the spatial information that is necessary for the construction of an adequate spatial mental model. However, no study has previously compared the influence of these encoding modalities on complex movements such as human spatial navigation within real room-size environments. Thus, we investigated whether the encoding of a spatial layout through verbal c

[Occupational therapy and eating disorders, a care case study].

Occupational therapy offers support through actuation via a suggested activity. It opens up a differentiated space, a space of experiences where patients can contemplate themselves through play. The therapeutic relationship, assured by the occupational therapist, offers flexibility and malleability to welcome, contain and support the person with an eating disorder. It aims to be compassionate without judgement to favour the experience of movement. 'Making do with oneself' to 'be with oneself' while respecting the temporality of the patient's possibilities.

Hearing of a presence.

Here we describe a patient with epilepsy (secondary to left parieto-temporal brain damage) suffering from the paroxysmal unilateral experience of hearing a person in her near extrapersonal space. The paroxysmal auditory experience was associated with a deficit in spatial auditory perception and other paroxysmal disorders of somatognosia. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the paroxysmal hearing of a person nearby corresponds to an auditory disorder of somatognosia.

Personality connotations of psychiatric diagnoses. Implications for a similarity model.

The major concern of this study was to identify the personality traits connotated by a number of diagnostic labels such as paranoid, schizoid, hysterical, and cyclothymic. Twenty psychiatrists were given a list of nonpsychotic personality disorders and were asked to indicate what personality traits were typically associated with them. Results showed good agreement among psychiatrists on the personality traits they believed to be implied by the diagnostic terms. A factor analysis of the ratings showed a circular configuration of relative similarity among the different diagnoses. The results are

[Morpho-functional characteristic of the lateral vaults of the epidural space of the spinal cord and their clinical significance].

The study of the epidural space was performed on 362 samples of the vertebral column obtained from the fetuses aged from 16 weeks, newborns, children and adult persons aged up to 90 years, using anatomical and histological methods. Within the lateral parts of the epidural space, the lateral vaults were distinguished. A new anatomical interpretation of these structures is proposed, considering them as a complex of anatomical structures including the periosteum of the intervertebral foramen, the sleeve of dura mater, intervertebral veins, spinal arteries, adipose tissue, the system of the connec

A mixed-methods study on spousal caregivers' burden in young-onset dementia in China: a joint display of qualitative and quantitative data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Becoming spousal caregivers for persons with young-onset dementia (YOD) is an unexpected event that deviates from the normal life course trajectory, creating unique and profound challenges. Understanding their burden, its primary sources, and their coping resources is essential for developing tailored support. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We employed a mixed-methods approach to comprehensively understand the caregiving burden experienced by 11 community-dwelling spousal caregivers of YOD. We used the Zarit Burden Interview to quantify caregiving burden and conducted

Spontaneous unilateral spatial neglect recovery after brain tumour resection: A multimodal diffusion and rs-fMRI case report.

Patients with unilateral spatial neglect (USN) are unable to explore or to report stimuli presented in the left personal and extra-personal space. USN is usually caused by lesion of the right parietal lobe: nowadays, it is also clear the key role of structural connections (the second and the third branch of the right Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus, respectively, SLF II and III) and functional networks (Dorsal and Ventral Attention Network, respectively, DAN and VAN) in USN. In this multimodal case report, we have merged those structural and functional information derived from a patient with …

Long-term effectiveness of spaced-retrieval memory training for older adults with probable Alzheimer's disease.

Ten older adults with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) were trained to recall everyday objects using the spaced-retrieval technique. Five persons had participated in a prior spaced-retrieval program (Cherry & Simmons-D'Gerolamo, 1999, Clinical Gerontologist, 20, 39-63). The authors retested these original participants to measure the long-term effectiveness of spaced-retrieval training. Five new participants were included for comparison purposes. During training, participants selected a target object from an array of items at increasingly longer retention intervals. To enhance the effectivenes

Treatment selection using prototyping in latent-space with application to depression treatment.

Machine-assisted treatment selection commonly follows one of two paradigms: a fully personalized paradigm which ignores any possible clustering of patients; or a sub-grouping paradigm which ignores personal differences within the identified groups. While both paradigms have shown promising results, each of them suffers from important limitations. In this article, we propose a novel deep learning-based treatment selection approach that is shown to strike a balance between the two paradigms using latent-space prototyping. Our approach is specifically tailored for domains in which effective proto
