BACKGROUND: Person-centred care has become the cornerstone of quality palliative and end-of-life care. Yet, there is a dearth of both practical guidance and tools to operationalize how to ensure palliative end-of-life care is optimally person-centred. Noting this lacuna, a new hospice in Eastern Canada developed and piloted their own tool, called the SELFY (Share, Explore, Learn and Focus on You!), the intention being to standardize their institution's commitment to high-quality person-centred hospice care.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated and refined the SELFY with the goal of ensuring its e

An increasing number of individuals receiving psoriasis biologics achieve clear/nearly clear skin (disease control). Clinical trial data indicate that some maintain disease control with lower doses, especially those with higher serum drug concentrations. This indicates the potential of model-informed precision dosing, an advanced therapeutic drug-monitoring technique, to guide dose minimization. We developed, validated, and user-tested a precision dosing dashboard. We applied a model-informed precision-dosing approach that leveraged Bayesian estimation to predict individual pharmacokinetic par

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, maintaining high standards of mental healthcare faces challenges due to an increasing demand for mental healthcare and a focus on symptomatic recovery rather than personal growth and improvement in the quality of life. Recovery colleges, which emphasize personal recovery through hope, autonomy, and empowerment, offer a transformative approach by fostering an environment where individuals with mental distress can learn and thrive. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of students and relevant stakeholders (like family members or regional social wor

Involving people living with dementia in the development of research through PPIE is the gold standard for ethical research. Established PPIE groups have been set up throughout the UK to provide people with dementia opportunities to have their voice heard. However, accessing these groups as a doctoral researcher can be difficult, and little guidance is given on how to make the process successful. Additionally, many people living with dementia are unaware such groups exist, and thus don't benefit from getting involved. In response, this paper summarises the PPIE process taken to develop a piece

Point-of-care testing (POCT) is a contemporary diagnostic approach characterized by its user-friendly nature, cost efficiency, environmental compatibility, and lack of reliance on professional experts. Therefore, it is widely used in clinical diagnosis and other analytical testing fields to meet the demand for rapid and convenient testing. The application of POCT technology not only improves testing efficiency, but also brings convenience and benefits to the healthcare industry. The personal glucose meter (PGM) is a highly successful commercial POCT tool that has been widely used not only for

BACKGROUND: Hepatoblastoma (HB) is a prevalent form of liver cancer in pediatric patients, characterized by an embryonal malignant tumor. In the current study, a clinical prediction model was developed; that can effectively assess the likelihood of a patient's survival with HB.
METHODS: Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for cases of HB between 2010 and 2019 were used in this retrospective research. Information on clinicopathologic characteristics, therapeutic interventions, and survival outcomes were included in the data. The HB patients were randomly a

BACKGROUND: The use of serious games in health care is on the rise, as these games motivate treatment adherence, reduce treatment costs, and educate patients and families. However, current serious games fail to offer personalized interventions, ignoring the need to abandon the one-size-fits-all approach. Moreover, these games, with a primary objective other than pure entertainment, are costly and complex to develop and require the constant involvement of a multidisciplinary team. No standardized approach exists on how serious games can be personalized, as existing literature focuses on specifi

Myopia is recognized as a multifactor, multicascade complex disease. However, people still know little about the pathogenesis of myopia. Therefore, we aim to guide the personalized treatment, drug research, and development of myopia. Here, based on the interaction network of myopia-related genes, this study constructed a multifactor-driven myopia disease module map. We first identified differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs in myopia. Then, we constructed a myopia-related protein interaction network targeted by these DE miRNAs. Further, we clustered the network into modules and identified module

BACKGROUND: Schools provide essential functions for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), but their vulnerability to infection with SARS-CoV-2 are a barrier to in-person learning. This qualitative study aimed to understand how weekly SARS-CoV-2 screening testing of students and staff could best facilitate in-school learning during the pandemic.
METHODS: Thirty-one focus groups were held with school staff and parents of children with IDD to examine the perceptions of COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 school year. Responses were analyzed using a directed thematic content

Adolescence is a critical period in the development of mental health with nearly 1 in 5 adolescents suffering from mental health problems and more than 40 percent of these experiencing at least one co-occurring mental health disorder. This study investigates whether there are differences in the relations between key dimensions of child and adolescent mental health in adolescence compared to childhood. Mental health and related socio-emotional traits were measured longitudinally at ages 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 16 in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 11279) using the Stren

BACKGROUND: Appropriate training modalities for post-stroke upper-limb rehabilitation are key features for effective recovery after the acute event. This study presents a cooperative control framework that promotes compliant motion and implements a variety of high-level rehabilitation modalities with a unified low-level explicit impedance control law. The core idea is that we can change the haptic behavior perceived by a human when interacting with the rehabilitation robot by tuning three impedance control parameters.
METHODS: The presented control law is based on an impedance controller with

We developed a virtual reality (VR)-based gait training system, which could be used by inpatients to train their gait function in a simulated home environment, to reduce the risk of falling after discharge. The proposed system simulates the home environment on a head-mounted display, in which a user can walk around freely. The system provides visual feedback in the event of a collision with an indoor object such as a wall or furniture, prompting the user to modify his or her gait pattern. We first applied the system to healthy young adults and confirmed the usefulness of visual feedback in red

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is common in persons seeking medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and may hinder many addiction-related services. Brief but accurate screening measures are needed to efficiently assess cognitive dysfunction in these resource-limited settings. The study aimed to develop a brief predictive risk score tailored for use among patients in drug treatment.
METHODS: The present study examined predictors of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), objectively assessed via the NIH Toolbox, among 173 patients receiving methadone as MOUD at an urban New England drug treatmen

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to show case study research focused on persons as a case and our personal engagement with the case can improve our innerstandings and understanding of person-centred care. Method: We present the methodology and epistemology of naturalistic case study research and illuminate this approach with the case study of Ellen, a young, Dutch, white-middle class woman with a compulsive disorder. We combine naturalistic case study research with the personal narratives of those involved in the research, including ourselves, and interpreted through a feminist and gend

Hemiplegics have difficulty conducting various daily tasks because they must perform such tasks using only their unaffected arm. If a robot arm that can replace their missing upper-limb function is made available, it will greatly contribute to an improvement in their lives. To realize such a robot arm, cooperative actions of the robot arm and the unaffected arm are important. The purpose of this research is to develop a "cybernic robot arm" that can provide work support through cooperation with the unaffected arm for realization of upper-limb tasks in the daily life of hemiplegics.
