Experience of Chicagoland acute care hospitals in preparing for Ebola virus disease, 2014-2015.

During the 2014-2015 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak, hospitals in the United States selected personal protective equipment (PPE) and trained healthcare personnel (HCP) in anticipation of receiving EVD patients. To improve future preparations for high-consequence infectious diseases, it was important to understand factors that affected PPE selection and training in the context of the EVD outbreak. Semistructured interviews were conducted with HCP involved with decision-making during EVD preparations at acute care hospitals in the Chicago, IL area to gather information about the PPE selectio

Why are nurses leaving nursing?

The causes of nurses' exodus from acute health care delivery practice may lie more in intrinsic factors rather than the heretofore overtly expressed reasons. This article examines bureaucratic factors, issues related to the medical profession and medical/scientific discourse, and factors within the nursing profession itself that may contribute to a nurse's unhappiness and dissatisfaction that causes him or her to leave. Nursing as emotional work and the implications for the individual nurse, and nursing as moral and moral distress are discussed. Suggestions to facilitate retention are made for

Engaging Rural Practitioners and Community Collaborators in Substance Use Disorder Needs Assessments: Recruitment Approaches Across 4 States.

OBJECTIVE: The Northeastern United States experienced the highest rates of synthetic opioid overdose deaths in 2019, and in 2020, 3 of the 8 states with higher rural than urban drug overdose death rates were in the Northeast. To inform delivery of evidence-based substance use treatment in rural areas, we examined approaches to recruiting health care practitioners and community collaborators who work with people with opioid use disorder (OUD) in 4 northeastern states to complete needs assessment surveys. This article also outlines our methodological approaches to engaging rural health care prac

US Army Accession and Retention Standards: Impact on Obesity and Medical Readiness.

INTRODUCTION: Military body fat standards were implemented in the 1980s to prevent obesity and associated poor military readiness. In the past 2 decades, enforcement of existing Army body composition standards has been eroded by the steady increase in national obesity rates, the demand for new recruits especially during the 2007 surge in Iraq, and the COVID epidemic in 2020. The diminishing qualified recruit pool puts a new focus on accession standards. The purpose of accession standards is to ensure that recruits will meet soldier standards, but accession standards have been relaxed to improv

[Infection Control Strategies for Cancer Patients Based on Chain of Infection].

Advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment have improved patient survival significantly. However, immunosuppression and the various invasive medical interventions often involved in these treatments increase infection risks. The core concept of "Chain of Infection" is used in this article to elaborate systematically on practical infection control strategies for cancer patients in three dimensions: the susceptible host, the infectious agent, and the mode of transmission. Strategies related to the susceptible host focus on enhancing host defense mechanisms and protecting potential portals of entr

Post-deployment family violence among UK military personnel.

BACKGROUND: Research into violence among military personnel has not differentiated between stranger- and family-directed violence. While military factors (combat exposure and post-deployment mental health problems) are risk factors for general violence, there has been limited research on their impact on violence within the family environment. This study aims to compare the prevalence of family-directed and stranger-directed violence among a deployed sample of UK military personnel and to explore risk factors associated with both family- and stranger-directed violence. METHOD: This study utili

Guidelines in Practice: Sterilization Packaging Systems.

Sterilization packaging systems play an important role in sterilization by promoting sterilant contact with all surfaces of reusable medical devices; maintaining device sterility; and protecting items from contamination during handling, storage, and transport. Packaging should be performed in ergonomically appropriate workspaces to help personnel avoid musculoskeletal injuries. When using packaging systems, personnel should adhere to the manufacturer's instructions for use. The recently updated AORN "Guideline for sterilization packaging systems" provides perioperative team members with inform

Mixed adverse ergonomic factors exposure in relation to work-related musculoskeletal disorders: a multicenter cross-sectional study of Chinese medical personnel.

Exposure to adverse ergonomic factors is associated with elevated risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in medical personnel. We aimed to reveal how different adverse ergonomic factors act individually and in combination to influence the risk of WMSDs in medical personnel. From June 2018 to December 2020, we applied multistage cluster random sampling to select a total of 6,099 medical personnel from 54 hospitals in 12 cities in China. All participants were aged over 18 years and had at least one year of hospital working experience. The weighted quantile sum (WQS) model was emp

Implementation challenges and opportunities for improved mass treatment uptake for lymphatic filariasis elimination: Perceptions and experiences of community drug distributors of coastal Kenya.

Community drug distributors (CDDs) who are volunteers have the responsibility of awareness creation, household census, drug distribution and record-keeping and are thus key stakeholders in the campaign for Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) elimination. Taking into account their experiences and perceptions is important for a successful elimination campaign. We conducted a qualitative study in 2018 to identify implementation challenges and opportunities for improved mass drug administration (MDA) uptake based on the CDDs perceptions and experiences. Within a larger study that used mixed methods quasi-ex

DIAGNOSTIC WORK-UP: The rescue, treatment and transport of patients with an injured spine require a systematic scheme with the subsequent rating of the findings and suspected diagnoses. In addition to the assessment of temporal urgency, the available resources and personnel, the duration and complexity of any possible technical measures that might be anticipated, the rational selection of immobilisation tools also plays a significant role. The most important medical rescue aids are the scoop stretcher and the spine board; the spine board, vacuum mattress and cervical collar are used to immobil

Standardized metrics can reveal region-specific opportunities in community engagement to aid recruitment in HIV prevention trials.

Good Participatory Practice (GPP) guidelines support and direct community engagement practices in biomedical HIV prevention trials, however no standardized metrics define the implementation and evaluation of these practices. Collaboratively, the Community Program staff of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) and the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) created a metric to describe, monitor, and evaluate one component of GPP, recruitment practices, in two HIV monoclonal Antibody Mediated Prevention (AMP) clinical trials, HVTN 703/HPTN 081 and HVTN 704/HPTN 085.
